Hi all,

I copied this from TG the last time we started a new thread, since what she wrote was so perfect:

The quote below is a version of the introduction Sheryl wrote for the Faculty Lounge thread when it first moved to KD. It's been edited to update it a bit, and to remove words such as "warn" and "excruciating" (as in "Be warned: the Faculty analyzes... in excruciating detail") because they make it sound like, well, a bad thing.

Hi there, and Welcome to the Faculty Lounge! Take a seat on a couch and check out an Elijah Wood movie. The Faculty analyzes Elijah Wood's performances, movies, and characters in detail. In the process we have been known to discuss everything from biology to whether PJ intends to evoke medieval paintings in his shots of Frodo.

An on-going debate in the Faculty is whether actors can make use of microexpressions, which are tiny changes in expression that pass by so fast people can't really see them, but that influence people's responses. The Faculty has been known to go through sections of EW's performances frame-by-frame in this debate, and then talk about what emotions he's trying to convey, why the character would feel that way, etc.

Since this thread was originally the Elijah Wood: Non-Swoon thread back at Imladris, I would like to ask that swoons here be kept to a minimum. Hobmom has a swoon thread where she puts up monthly wallpaper and does all manner of niftiness.

Basically, posters to this thread treat EW and each other with respect, and tolerate huge long posts on minutia and pure speculation- but don't require them.

Faculty research has also been responsible for a veritable explosion (one of my boss's favorite phrases ) of specialized areas of elwoodian study including Nat angst, camera angels, jaw setting, jawline acting, nostril acting, eyebrow acting, skin-fold analysis, [that muscle whose name I can never remember] analysis, "How does he do that?" moments, cloak action, Secret Sam Smiles, The One Expression, the Golden Ratio facial feature analysis, evaluation of Ed Burns' walking skills, micro-expression theory vs. repertoire theory of Elijah Wood acting, capping vs. the Gap, Try 17 vs. All I Want, Todd vs. Boy George, and whether it's possible to watch TAMTSNBN without permanent neural damage.

All that, and still no grant funding!

So find a seat, pop in a movie, and fill a cup at the water cooler (just one cup, though--Casey might still be hiding in the closet with that broom and we don't want him to get suspicious).

There's plenty of coffee, though!

Anyway, welcome all to our new home! I hope this' OK for me to start us up again, but I had to bring great news and found the old threat closed --

"Hooligans" won both the narrative feature audience award and the narrative jury prize at the 2005 SXSW Film Festival!!!

Oh, and btw -- the Sin City premiere will be at at Mann's National Theatre, 10925 Lindbrook, in Westwood, arrivals between 5 and 6:30

BIG ETA: Lij will be on Ellen next Wednesday, March 23 to promote Sin City!!!

Thanks, Achila, for the good news and the new thread!

Here is another little bit of news--I don't quite know what to make of it, but as the New York Times reports this morning of next year's planned premiere (in Toronto) of the three-hour musical, "The Lord of the Rings," producer Kevin Wallace says it was "relatively easy for the creative team to adapt the epic."

Wallace said in a phone interview, "If you take out the reflective passages of the books and hone in on the essence of the story, the friendship between Frodo and Sam and the fellowship, you can do justice to the three books."

I certainly agree about what the essence of the story is, but three hours?

Thanks Achila and Flourish!

Don't forget to vote at AICN for the movie shown at SXSW that most "peeks your interest." I posted this last night but mine was the last post before Bridget locked The Faculty Lounge #6 and I thought it might be missed. Sorry to repeat myself. (Although that seems to happen more often these days.)

Thank you for starting the new thread Achila!

I was just dying to post that good news about Hooligans top honors at SxSW last night when I discovered it, but I didn't want to be the one to start us up again.

so this is like Jubilee, right? All past sins of unbelief ;) are forgiven, and Mariole and I are out of Detention! :haha:

From today's The Philadelphia Inquirer:

The long-awaited musical adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings is finally ready to take the stage. The $22 mil show, which is riding hard on the heels of the mega-successful Peter Jackson-helmed film adaptations, is set to open in Toronto next March and travel to London six months later.

"We are going to have to break new ground. It is a hybrid of text, music, spectacle and physical theater," producer Kevin Wallace said yesterday.

But lest Dungeons & Dragon-playing Tolkien purists stage an armed revolt, Wallace vowed that "there will be no singing-and-dancing Hobbits. The music will be in a very traditional mold and draw on ethnic traditions."

C-I don't play D&D and I like singing and dancing Hobbits-4

Not unusual that the writer don't know much 'bout no Tolkien purists  --Most would tear their hair out over D&D, and singing and dancing hobbits are just fine (as long as they're singing and dancing according to the book ;) ).

Hope you have a lovely day!

There is an article about the winners at the SXSW Festival and some news footage, which includes a brief interview with Lexi Alexander and some scenes from the film that we haven't seen before on Austin's Channel 8 News site (http://www.news8austin.com/content/top_stories/default.asp?ArID=133236).

found this little thing!!!!

what do you ladies think about this??!!!
i think it rocks!!!!!

Review:
Thank you Lexi, this film rocks! At the end of the movie you want to just stand up and cheer. For those people who did not think that Elijah Wood (who plays Matt, the story's protagonist) was a good choice to portray football violence; Lexi Alexander the film's director stood up before the film started and said that she specifically chose Elijah because as an actor he has the ability to be in the background and let the story be told through his eyes and experiences. Think of the function of the Chorus in Greek drama. They are part of and yet not part of the play. Without them, you would not be able to understand the plot, action and meaning of the play. Elijah Wood is the Chorus.

I love Lexi's comparison to the Greek Chorus and think it is rather interesting! Obviously she did recognise the deeper levels of Elijah's acting and the importance of it for the entire movie. Elijah as the "translator" for the audience, the linchpin of the whole thing. I can't think of a greater compliment. :) Thanks for posting that, Wood!

Thanks to Achila for starting the new thread!

Happy birthday, Sheryl. Isn’t it nice that it coincides with the good news out of Austin!

I was so glad to see wood’s post of the Lexi Alexander quote, about Elijah serving as the “Greek chorus” – especially since, in an earlier interview, she had praised another Hooligans actor highly and never once mentioned Elijah. IIRC, some time ago, someone on here voiced concern that EJW might get overlooked in this film, because (once again) he apparently doesn’t have the big, splashy role. Hopefully, Lexi will keep making noises like this in connection with the film’s promotion!

Elijah on “Ellen” – I assume I’m not the only one who remembers how charming he was when he was her guest in (I think) January of last year?? [ :) Rubbing hands gleefully at prospect of – I hope – lots of publicity appearances for Sin City]

On a personal note, I have been down with a nasty virus for the past week. While searching for something to watch, to take my mind off how lousy I felt, which Lij films did I choose? Fellowship, of course (it’s practically like chicken soup); and also Avalon. Which raises a question in my mind: Which of The Lad’s films do other Faculty members find most soothing/therapeutic in times of trouble? (May not necessarily be the same as the ones you think are his best.)

What a wonderul question, Pelagia! Personally I love "The War;" it just makes me feel good. Completely different (and controversial, I know  ) is "All I Want;" the comedic elements make me laugh, and other bits make me cry(!) and it's just irresistible. (Now there's a repetitve soundtrack that I don't mind at all!)

ETA: I'm a little conflicted about the Lexi Alexander "Greek Chorus" quote. For those of us in the know, watching Elijah " be in the background and let the story be told through his eyes and experiences" will be a delight. But, again, it's a passive kind of thing, and wider audiences may not think they saw him acting at all.

Oh man, What a day! Glorious, glorious things happening! Awards! Interviews! Video clips! Articles! Standing ovations! There's a "rate this article" button on that page, btw; when you go to read the article, rate it - high!

Thanks, Bunnie, and Wood, and whoever else has been posting links, for all the great news! I guess our doubts about Lexi's attitude toward The One Lad are resolved; I suspect she too fell just a little bit in love with him. Can't blame her. It's neat that he's knowledgable enough, and cares enough, to meet with financing people like that and sell them on the movie. I wonder if they knew that once they looked into those eyes they didn't have a prayer? ;)

Now, if he could just meet with a few distributors... :z:

Such great news everybody!! Thanks for all the posts. And Bunnie, that article is terrific.

I love the picture!! And what struck me as the page loaded was how much the expression in that picture matches the expression of Frodo in the hobbit princes picture Achila posted. Serious Frodo. Serious Elijah. :k

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, SHERYL! (http://www.imagemagician.com/images/blossom/Sheryl.gif)

I hope you're enjoying your day! :)

Bunnie and wood - thanks so much for the quotes and links to Hooligans interviews and clips.

Lexi comes across as being very appreciate of Elijah. I'm also impressed that he was involved in talks for the financing of this film. And it won awards! That's great news. :)

Pelagia I hope you're feeling better now. Elijah films? If I were curled up on the sofa nursing a cold, it would have to be Fellowship - in fact I'll pop it in the DVD player if I so much as sneeze - any excuse! I love it - it's so Frodo-rich! :) I do find that I watch Bumblebee a lot. And I have to second Honey's choice of The War. Huck Finn is sure to cheer me up too.

Happy Birthday, Sheryl!!!

Many hobbit returns.... :p

Terrific news and pictures and all. And a brand new home! Lovely, just lovely. The company is especially wonderful. :)

Pelagia, why just the other night, when I was (not sick) but burned out and in need of a pick me up, I put on the Easter Egg in disk one of RoTK! Highly recommended for its therapeutic possibilities.

Non-Lotr--since I think Elwood is a truly gifted comic actor, I like to pop in Chain of Fools.

Am warming up the VCR for the Ellen show. Thanks for the tip!

Ladies!!! I just visited aintitcoolnews, and found an early review of Sin City. It's quite lengthy - we're not allowed to link there, are we? But the review is easy enough to find. This is what the reviewer said of Elijah:

elijah wood, benicio del toro, and nick stahl are three of the sleaziest villians i've ever seen in the movies…

and this:

… and wood? i'm gonna say the least about him and leave it as a surprise for you to discover. all i'll say is that frodo baggins is dead, with this one performance, and wood IS simply terrifying and disturbing as kevin. hell, people in the audience were so unnerrved by him that they gasped EVERY TIME he came on screen.

Bunnie, thanks for the great article. I feel so unaccountably proud of him! :D

And Blossom, that review of Sin City! Thank you, I needed that. To think a half hour ago, as I was cleaning up the kitchen, I was wondering if an actor could become so cemented in the public mind as ONE character that he would be untouchable to any cautious movie producer! Well, maybe that could be true of just any old actor (::cough::markhamill::cough:: ) but not of the One Lad!
frodo baggins is dead, with this one performance, and wood IS simply terrifying and disturbing as kevin
It's shaping up to be quite a year for our favorite actor!

:) All this news is awesome! I most definitely will go see this movie but unlike Frodo, I may be going alone. Does that bother me? :D Not at all. I wouldn't miss it for anything. Just don't tell any of my professors or my boss why I've gone missing...

Thank you Faculty from my semi-lurking mode. You all are the best!

ETA: Uh-oh, just read the rest of that review over at Harry's...
...but it's still one of the most graphically violent films i've ever seen. there are no clean wounds or slick violence in this film; it's all ragged and bloody and spurting and unclean and downright mean looking. the two grisly piece-de-resistances? hartigan's final confrontation with junior and marv's "little chat" with kevin.I think I've read enough info to have an idea what this "little chat" will be...*slides down in theater seat with eyes almost closed*

OK, you guys, as a mostly no-account lurker, I was wondering...."What happened to all those 'notification of reply' doo-hickeys that show up in my email box? Could no one in The Faculty have posted in this amount of time???"

I just looked at my old reply notices that I deleted, clicked one ("What the heck?") and saw the thread had been archived. Silly me!

Anyway, Bunnie Bugs, I must mention that, reading the interview you linked back there (with EW and Lexi A.), I was alarmed by how easily I could hear EW's voice saying every line in the interview, although I never had heard this interview.

Uh-oh, indeed. I am THAT used to hearing his public voice, I guess -- Miss "I'm Not EW the Actor's Fan" Mechtild. This looks very ill indeed.

I must mention that, reading the interview you linked back there (with EW and Lexi A.), I was alarmed by how easily I could hear EW's voice saying every line in the interview, although I never had heard this interview. I'm afraid that I'm more alarmed if I can't hear his voice when I read an interview, because it's usually a clue that it's not an actual interview (at worst) or that it's a cobbled-together and heavily-edited one. :)

Aaaand the good news just keeps pouring in...

Hooligans review from ComingSoon.net:

This film being one of the first films created since his long stint as Frodo Baggins will redefine Woods (grrrr!) as not only a talented actor but also a rising action star. (http://www.comingsoon.net/news/reviewsnews.php?id=8778)

Can you believe that a man actually wrote that? I guess our lad is a lot more believable as a "tough guy" than I had been led to believe. Action star, indeed. :D I'm not especially interested in his pursuing that direction in his career, though, and I expect that he isn't either. But I'm so glad that the author appreciated him in this role!

Oh, and according to Dougie Brimson (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/dougie.brimson/news.htm): This is the first time a single film has ever picked up both prizes at the festival.

I have a very, very strong feeling that Hooligans is going to get picked up, and soon. :)

Happy Birthday Sheryl ...all of this good news must be among the best of presents
Thanks Achila for starting the new thread and how fitting for the thread to begin on such a wonderful and exciting day
I think the world is going to really see what we all have known for awhile now:

Mr. Wood is more than just a pretty face and certainly more than a Johnny One Note.

Our patience in waiting for Elijah to return to screen is gonna pay off Big Time. I'm so impressed with the way he has carefully and skillfully chosen his roles. The last two films were Oscar winners...and who knows what this year will bring..if not Oscar winning I am certain ,at the very least, he will show his versatility. Playing it safe may pay for the groceries but won't secure his future in the big leagues. I don't think he'll ever "just play it safe".
The savvy this young man possesses never fails to amaze me...how did he get so very smart at age 24?

So glad I didn't fall for a piece of junk

P.S.....Please don't tell my kids I just made that statement.I'm only here because of his talent ;) I've never noticed how the lad looks :D

Hee hee -- Action Frodo! He's already been an action figure -- why not?!

But you know, this' yet another article where the author says he was cast against type. This is entirely the point that they seem to be missing. Oh well. But the rating of 9/10 makes me forget all that -- wow -- what a review! And those of you who get the Google or Yahoo alerts probably saw that that article from yesterday was picked up and distributed to the universe. Methinks another, better type of distribution will follow. I don't imagine this will go wide, but an "art house" release is better than "direct to DVD" any day!

ETA: Here's a Sin City review from someone who attended a screening yesterday (from oscarwatch):

So, I got back from Sin City a few hours ago and I still really don’t know what to say, except “Wow!”

As of now, this IS my #1 movie of 2005.

It’s a visual treat that’s faithfully adapted by Rodriguez. Screw Spider-Man 2. Sin City is the best comic book movie to come out in recent years, no questions asked. Also, and I thought this was cool, there’s even some dialogue from A Dame to Kill For (book #2) that, if he makes a sequel, will definitely be interesting to see on screen, since IMDb said that Maria Bello was gonna be Ava Lord.

The Cinematography and Editing is top notch and Rodriguez should be congratulated for his work.

The cast is at the top of their game (and Elijah Wood was SO DAMN CREEPY as Kevin. That damn smirk is gonna haunt me tonight). Stahl is great as the lead villain of That Yellow Bastard (though if any Roark was involved in a story, there WERE the main villain). Even his voice got creepy with the transformation. Hartnett’s good in his brief scenes (don’t ask about the other scene). Rosario is good. Clive, Benicio, and Mickey are great. Madsen does a good job. And Powers Boothe is menacing as Hell.

If there’s any chance the Oscars took notice of this film, it would definitely get a nod for Makeup because of the astonishing work for Marv and the Yellow Bastard.

The Rodriguez/Debney/Revell score is great and I can’t wait to get the music for it.

For those worried about how violent the film will be compared to the books, fear not. It’s violent and then some.

BTW, in case anyone is worried -- you don't actually see Kevin eat anyone. But it's horrific enough what you do see.

OMG -- then, from the same forum, I just found this as a comment from another poster (I think I'm having a moment):
I think with the surprising festival success of Hooligans, the nightmare inducing performance in Sin City, not to mention last years Eternal Sunshine, that Elijah Wood could really be priming himself for an Oscar nom if Everything is Illuminated delivers.

Further ETA: Another review of Hooligans from AICN (there's more but the rest doesn't involve Elijah -- this was posted by Annette Kellerman, if you're of a mind to go find it):
I know, I know. There have been a million reviews of this film, but I just had to chime in myself. It is, by far, the best narrative feature that I've seen at the fest.

If you don't know already, the film revolves around the story of Elijah Wood's character as he gets expelled from Harvard (by no fault of his own) and takes refuge in London where his older sister (Claire Forlani) is happily married to an English geezer with whom she has a baby. From there the story takes us into the completely surprising and interesting world of football hooliganism.

Despite the violent nature of this secretive subculture, it is the loyalty and devotion among the hooligans of the "firm" that quickly draws Elijah's Matt Buckner-as well as the audience- into their story. Elijah Wood delivers a solid, wonderfully understated performance that allows the audience to discover this underground world as he does.

For those worried about how violent the film will be compared to the books, fear not. It’s violent and then some.

Rightly diagnosed this viewer's problem, offered the wrong cure.

However, that's a lovely antidote you've got there, Bunnie! What a wonderfully flaky image. I'm looking forward to that film, no problem. ;)

Thank y'all for the birthday wishes. :)

Happy birthday, Sheryl. Isn’t it nice that it coincides with the good news out of Austin!

Yes, and I am most excited about the review BLOSSOM quoted -

wood IS simply terrifying and disturbing as kevin. hell, people in the audience were so unnerrved by him that they gasped EVERY TIME he came on screen.

Reviewers should have known better from the first, but I think a lot of "the public" is going to be shocked by Kevin and, in retrospect, realize what a brilliant job EW did on LOTR. :) I think a lot of people just sort of thought "he's playing himself" on LOTR - witness the number of people who thought Frodo's accent was Elijah's. ;)

I was so disappointed when Chain of Fools didn't make a showing in the states (that's kind of my "comfort" movie), but it looks like EW will be a "rising action star" without it. :D

Mechtild, that "Action Frodo" picture isn't mine. It belongs to Ainon, our Malaysian friend who used to post here. (Where are you Ainon? Exciting things are happening!) But you can probably use it at TORC if you give her credit. :k

Cool EII poster! Though I was hoping any artistic nods would be to Chagall.

Honey, thank you. :k I will do that: post the pic but credit her for it. It is so cute! (And I actually admire all the other characters depicted, too; no, that is too weakly said in the case of film Judah Ben Hur; him I love.)

Oh, and how about Kevin's smirk that's mentioned in the AICN review? Can anyone say, "Evil Frodo"?

Happy Birthday, Sheryl! Whee, exciting times!

Reviewers should have known better from the first, but I think a lot of "the public" is going to be shocked by Kevin and, in retrospect, realize what a brilliant job EW did on LOTR. I think a lot of people just sort of thought "he's playing himself" on LOTR - witness the number of people who thought Frodo's accent was Elijah's.
I am convinced that this is so. I wasn't familiar with Elijah's work when I first saw FOTR, but his performance as Frodo just gripped me. What's more, it got better with each viewing (and there were a lot of viewings). :p That's what I love about Elijah's "understated" acting. It continues to reveal layers, and doesn't get old. I think people in general will suddenly realize what a good job he did and congratulate themselves on how they "always knew" there was something special about that guy! I don't care, as long as the Lad keeps working!

Excellent news about EW, all round! Thank you for the review snippets and article links! Re Sin City, I'm afraid spurting gore is not my favorite movie experience. With proper warning, I might be able to watch this movie with a supervisor who will instruct, "Cover your eyes...okay, open them." :p

I'm only here because of his talent I've never noticed how the lad looks
How odd! Me, either. *feels black dots pop out all over her soul*

Honey! Ainon's action pic cracked me up. I love it! Thank you for posting it. (:k to Ainon, wherever she might be.)

People gasping when he comes onscreen?!?
Like Achila, I can't see what is so special about this. I've been doing that for years! :o

Feel better, Pelagia! I like action movies as comfort. Who knows why? So I've viewed Deep Impact and Faculty again (I also like CoF). As my rehabilitation is long, I'm also finally listening to all those commentaries on the LOTR EEs. I did ROTK, and am now back to Fellowship. I remember turning it off before (except the cast commentary) because PJ was dropping too many hints. But now he can spoil away. I've seen the films, and can appreciate his comments in context.

Tg, love your dancing hobbits! ;) Ah, the joys of being a purist! :p

Sorry, went all AOL fangirlish for a moment there. What a day! Bunnie, what a gorgeous poster! Evil Kevin, yay! Hooligans winning awards left right and centre, double yay! EII with a spendiferous poster! The best thing is, that even if EII sucks (and I really doubt it will), EW will be in two really excellent films!

What good taste that lad has, if we couldn't all praise him more already.

Oh, I feel so excited I want to go home and crack open a bottle of champagne! (Hmm, I do have some sparkling wine in the fridge - what a temptation!)

Hugs to all for the steady stream of wonderful news! I hope it doesn't calm down and that the hype gets higher and higher (just so long as everything gets general distribution. :D )

I'm so happy to have the Faculty to share all the excitement - if I didn't I'd be running and telling total strangers in the street!

---------------- [No Words!]

I'm just trying to keep up with reading this thread, let alone everything else on the 'net! So thanks to everyone for bringing such great "finds" here :k . (I have been working diligently on my "Casey Conner: Action Hero" presentation. ;) )

What I keep scrolling back to look at is Bunnie's EII poster!! I looove that poster! Makes me feel even more excited about that film--if it lives up to that poster... What can I say?

What do I love about that poster?

--I love the whole surreal nature of it.
--I love "Leave normal behind" and hope the movie will be true to that.
--I love the hair.
--I love the clothes (buttoned down collar on the shirt  ).
--I love the glasses.
--I love the contrast between the nothing-but-black-and-white clothes, hair and glasses (and even the hands) and the bright flowers and sky.
--I love the eyebrow acting!!
--I love the flower in front of his face, which is a perfect set-up for the eyebrow acting ;) .
--I love that someone actually realized how good Elijah is at eyebrow acting and made it central to the poster!
--I love that at one glance I feel like I know this character--and hope a lot of people will feel that way, even if they don't quite know why (those not especially cognizant of eyebrow acting :p ).
--I love that "Elijah Wood" is above the title.

I just picked up a new word at AICN: geekasm.
And that poster just about... But I am at the office..

---------------

A few pick-ups from Annette Kellerman's review of Hooligans:
Elijah Wood delivers a solid, wonderfully understated performance that allows the audience to discover this underground world as he does.
IMHO, this is the "Greek chorus" aspect of his character. Matt is the "stand-in" for the audience, and the way he responds to things could very well be the way one of us (generic "us") might respond--or at least makes us think about how we might respond. Not to leave anyone out, but I'm believing more and more strongly that this movie was made for Americans, most of whom are unaware that hooliganism even exists. As in a lot of fantasy books, it's one of us who steps through the looking glass or out the back of the wardrobe, so we learn about this "underground world" as he does. I'm glad the movie premiered in the U.S.--in Texas, of all places.

The greatest surprise, however, are the absolutely riveting performances by brits Charlie Hunnam and Leo Gregory as the leader and a member of the firm, respectively. Damn, can these boys act!! Leo Gregory can express more with one drunken eye roll than most actors emote in an entire film...
IIRC, Leo Gregory is the actor Lexi Alexander singled out to praise, so maybe she wasn't far off.

And perhaps the best part of the review:
I have no doubt that it will be at a theater near you soon enough.
:z: :z:

----'cause Hooligans I'll actually go see. Sin City on the other hand... Not that I don't think it's going to be an amazingly, incredible breakthrough of a fantastic film--the violence is just something I can't personally handle. But I'm very happy for Elijah that it--and Kevin--are getting so much attention.

-------------------

Bit of recent conversation, somewhat paraphrased because of memory lapses, with my non-Tolkien-appreciating friend, who also sees no reason to go online (even after her cousin gave her a computer specifically so she could email him, she still doesn't have an internet connection):
"So you've never emailed [your cousin]?"

"No, I call him on the telephone. And any information I want I can get at the library or by phoning someone. I just don't need anything else."

"But just using the telephone would make it awfully hard to communicate with someone in Kuala Lumpur."

[Rolling eyes] "Well, I don't know anyone in Kuala Lumpur."

"That's because you don't go on the internet!!"
But, ainon, where are you?? :(

P.S. to Mariole: He's even singing the lyrics from the book ;) .

I'm a little conflicted about the Lexi Alexander "Greek Chorus" quote. For those of us in the know, watching Elijah " be in the background and let the story be told through his eyes and experiences" will be a delight. But, again, it's a passive kind of thing, and wider audiences may not think they saw him acting at all.
Going by Blossom’s excerpts from the AICN Sin City review, even if some audiences don’t appreciate his acting abilities/range in Hooligans, they’ll certainly have to acknowledge them after SC. Actually, when you look at the three films that Elijah has coming out this year (I’m being optimistic and believing that Hooligans WILL get a US distributor), they seem very well chosen to display his diverse talents (as well as to distance him from Frodo): a “passive” role (but apparently not so passive that it stopped the ComingSoon reviewer from calling him a “rising action star”); a sleazy villainous one (that’s something entirely new for him; Patrick was rather sleazy, but not homicidal); and a humorous (I’m assuming) one. It’s a very cleverly assembled collection, for a young character actor; and especially when you consider that the options for male actors his age are somewhat limited. At least, that’s my impression. They’re generally considered too young for the really meaty roles, aren’t they?

BunnieBugs! Thanks for the EII poster! What a great image!

Mariole – I absolutely agree with you about Frodo, that:
What's more, it got better with each viewing (and there were a lot of viewings). That's what I love about Elijah's "understated" acting. It continues to reveal layers, and doesn't get old.

ETA: Simulposted with Hobmom--There might be some similarities between the Ring-using-Frodo's-body smirk and Kevin's smirk, but I'd lay bets that they won't be exactly alike. Just because Elijah never does anything exactly alike. Wonder how "human" Kevin will be; what creeps me out the most about the Ring-smirk is that it's so totally non-human. (How does he do that?)

Could it be that Frodo fans are into dolls way more than Legolas fans?? :D Quite plausible. A good many Frodo fans seem to have at least one little Frodo tucked away. Having met a good many fans at Hoot and ORC...I can tell you a population of Frodolls hovered either in the open or lurked in purses, suitcases, in the trunks of cars, or sometime tucked into one's clothing. So Legolas....His fans don't do that??? Interesting....

Many Thanks to Achila for that wonderful link to the SC video..also to Honey for the screencap...first real clear view of Kevin(well...as clear as we're likely to see, given the fact they are most definitely trying to keep him under wraps!)

I'm with you TG...so many things about that EII poster I love...and my number 1 is the joy (like you) in seeing his name above the title...that screams A-LIST actor doesn't it? :D Thank You Bunny for posting that....hmmmm well....poster!

And I'm also pleased that he may see his dream of starting up a record label soon. Can anyone explain to me why they still call it a record label...when it's really neither a record nor a label? ;) Seems to me it's time to call it something else ;)

BTW...I met my new "son" today..he's not quite 2 weeks old..and he's black and furry and the feistiest of his litter...he'll be joining his new family in about 5 weeks.....oh and his name is Mr. Frodo....Do y'all approve of his name?

ETA: I'm curious why....you're curiuos? :D

I've been thinking more about that EII poster, and why I like it. I love the sunflower which seems to be emerging form Jonathan's mouth (despite the fact that it is hiding that lovely mouth!) It's inherently bright, cheery nature contrasts with the sadness in Jonathan's eyes. It's as though Jonathan's seen and understood something - the Holocaust - which he doesn't wish to define his world. And so, as a writer, he's filling it with colorful characters, romance, love in order to be able to continue in it.

speculative, slightly spoilery stuff ahead

In fact I think I may have just stumbled on something that I've been puzzling over ever since I read EII. I couldn't understand why Alex chooses to end his part in the story the way he does (trying to avoid spoilers here.) But maybe it's because he can't fill his world with the hope that Jonathan can.

ETA Again: Alex's story of his life is a complete fiction at the beginning - all his girlfriends, etc., but by the end he's stripped that all away, and has no "fiction" Wow! I oughta stay up past my bed-time more often! :D

hope I'm making sense. I'm awake long past when I ought to be....

Happy Birthday, Bohemian! :)

Now, that the trees come into leaf, the hobbit actors are blooming everywhere:

I LOVE that poster :D . I agree completely with Tg's list. Honey, your analysis does make sense. Achila, do you happen to know how many posters we can await?

Thankyou, thankyou, thankyou all for the wonderful flood of news, links and pictures!! :k - Great Kevin screencap, Honey, and Achila, the link to the Sin City video was great. But I must admit that I also feel the need for someone holding my hand :p . Apropos hand - at the age of 17 my then-boyfriend and I went often to the movies. We watched a few really tough films then ("Altered States", anyone?), and my friend had the habit to have his hand on mine during the film. With increasing suspense and horror on the screen the humidity of his palm increased as well and when the shock effect finally reached its climax he always winced fiercely (the poor!). I, in contrast, had prepared myself so much for this upcoming "BOO!" moment that I managed it (more often than not) not to bat an eyelid. OMG, was I ! I think my friend considered me a completely callous person in a while...little did he know. But, mhm, yes, I was a weird teenager. I think I'd have gotten along with Mikey Carver, on some points :p!
The older I grew the more sensitive I became. And now things have got to the stage where I am yellow to watch an Ex-Hobbit at the cinema. It's a shame. :o

I LOVE that poster :D . I agree completely with Tg's list. Honey, your analysis does make sense. Achila, do you happen to know how many posters we can await? Oh no, whiteling, I was just speculating, especially considering all the Sin City posters there are. The EII poster was shown at ShoWest, an industry convention, but when it will actually "hit the streets", so to speak, we don't know. It could be tomorrow and then followed by a new one every month or so, or it could be a sneak preview of the only one they'll ever have, which won't be "around" until May or June -- as I said, all highly speculative on my part.

I wanted to remind everyone of the upcoming schedule of the Starz Behind the Scenes show, which we reported in the last thread:

A very happy birthday to Bohemian  , and to King Lamoni although he probably won't see this.

ETA: Whoa! I wondered what "Lime" would look like! [for the needed sunglasses :p ].

EandMe, whenever you see him in pics signing autographs he's using his right hand...... ETA: I'm curious why....you're curiuos? :D
Are you left-handed, EandMe? I'm always curious about that regarding people I find especially interesting--because I'm left-handed. One of my favorite pics before FotR came out was the cover of (IIRC) Realms of Fantasy where they had the ubiquitous picture of the four hobbits at Weathertop but had it reversed--I've always thought Frodo should be left-handed :) .

In fact I think I may have just stumbled on something that I've been puzzling over ever since I read EII. I couldn't understand why Alex chooses to end his part in the story the way he does (trying to avoid spoilers here.) But maybe it's because he can't fill his world with the hope that Jonathan can.
Hmmm... Jonathan's (fictional) story doesn't exactly end in a hopeful way, except for the Oroborous (sp?) feel of it--the end leading back to the beginning. I hadn't thought of that as signifying hope, exactly, but in a way I suppose it does.

BTW--I'm not sure if this is a possible book spoiler or not, because it comes toward the beginning of the book but is about something that happens toward the end (if you've read the book you'll understand that sentence :p ):

I've read the book through only once, but lately have been opening it occasionally to different places, concentrating on the "rigid voyage" that will probably be the story in the movie. I ran across something in Alex's first letter to Jonathan that had no meaning at all when I read it the first time, but hit me over the head after reading the book: Alex telling Jonathan how sorry he is that Jonathan had his box stolen from him on the train. Now knowing what the box is, and realizing that Jonathan had it stolen before he ever got home, I found deeply affecting. (IMHO, one of the marks of a great book is that it has more to offer if you read it again.)

End of possible book spoiler

ETA Again: Alex's story of his life is a complete fiction at the beginning - all his girlfriends, etc., but by the end he's stripped that all away, and has no "fiction"
Yes, but I don't think of that in a completely negative way. He learns to take hold of his situation the way it really is, instead of fantasizing about it. I find the actions Alex takes at the end of the book to be very, very hopeful, for that reason. Much more hopeful than his dreaming about himself and his brother living in a huge apartment on Times Square.

Wow! I oughta stay up past my bed-time more often! :D
I found out last night that a friend of many years died suddenly a few days ago. It's worse because he's someone I always thought "I should give a call" when I'd go to visit my mom, but hadn't done so for a very, very long time. I wasn't able to sleep, or do much of anything else, so til about 2:00 am, when I finally went to bed, I played with pretty pictures on the computer. I just got a new image editing program that I'm still learning how to use, so there's lots to play with. I put the results on a webpage (http://www.frodolivesin.us/Pics/id12.htm) that's not linked to the main part of the site.

I just went back and re-read the ending, and realized that I'd remembered it completely wrong. :o Maybe I need to go back to bed! And re-read the book when I have two brain cells to rub together!

Ignore everything I said in my previous post! I'll think some more, and come back to ya!

and TG, I'm sorry to hear about your friend. But I did enjoy looking at your "experiments" and that lovely little bit of God's handiwork that is Elijah's beautiful face

...and that lovely little bit of God's handiwork that is Elijah's beautiful face

What I find so striking is how much other-worldly beauty there is in Casey, who isn't a character usually thought of that way. He just has to be caught at the right moment, which probably makes some profound statement about Casey, Elijah and human nature in general that I can't quite think out right now.

Thank-you for opening us all a brand spanking new Faculty Lounge to get comfortable in...( even though we are already on page 3  that's amazing for two days - just like old times !!! :D )

Thank-you also for the amazing Sin City video...
This is one upcoming film that I will be looking forward to with baited breath...it looks JUST AMAZING !!! From a purely artistic point of view, the film really is fabulous to look at, and very faithful to the comic...and truly unique as a film, stylewise - I just love the B & W with flashes of pure colour every so often - so utterly comic-like somehow !!!...I think this will be a Classic, particularly amongst the Comic-loving underworld...it's the sort of film that art students really love, and I think that this IS what this film looks like to me...a piece of ART, violent or not ! Speaking of which, the violence doesn't bother me in this particular film, because it is such a part of it, that it wouldn't work without it...and, strangely, B & W violence is never as bad as graphic full colour violence...but then that's probably just me !! :o
Oh well..

BunnieBugs,
I just LOVE that EII poster, and I agree, there is more than a nod to good old Magritte, my favourite weirdo surrealist ( with apologies to Dali, who I think takes the affectionate award for sheer nuttiness !! ) I LOVE the fact that he looks completely non-plussed that there is apparently a sunflower in his mouth, as if he had no part in putting it there...he has an expression that says
"Look....it's nothing to do with me, I was just standing here with no worries, just minding my own business, and suddenly it starts raining sunflowers and here I am, with one in my mouth...dammit....how did that get there ? " There's eyebrow acting for you..speaks volumes !!!
Also, does anyone else think that he looks as if he's had his body elongated in this poster ? He does look abnormally tall...

I clicked on the link for the EII site too...and found that they have updated it considerably since I last visited...and YES, I agree....the music is just LOVELY !!!
I suspect that yet another soundtrack purchase may on the way...

Just enough time to wish Bohemian...

A VERY HAPPY BIRTHDAY INDEED !!!

From one lurker to another, do post again... :k

Also, does anyone else ythink that he looks as if he's had his body elongated in this poster ?

Beautiful pictures tg.

The Faculty, the movie that is, has always been my favorite for looking at Elijah's eyes. Especially the fish tank scene and in the library with...oh, I forgot her name. I'll consider finding that out my homework assignment for tonight! :D

Happy Birthday, Bohemian!

I've been looking at the picture of Kevin that Honeyelf posted; it looks like EW and it doesn't look like him. As tg predicted, the smirk is a new smirk, but the contour of the face seems different. HDHDT*

When I first saw the picture, I thought he looks like a chipmunk who has food stor.....   GACK!

*How Does He Do That?

ETA-The pictures are great, tg. I especially like the one with the camera.

I heard from Ainon recently and she admitted to being quite behind over here.

I heard from dear Ainon just a few days ago, Alyon, and she said much the same to me. She's got so far behind with things here she's even given up on lurking. Not that she's lost interest - Oh no! I think she's just moved on to some other things, internet-wise, and simply hasn't the time to fit everything in. She still loves LOTR, Elijah, and all of us! :)

Maybe we will be lucky and she'll decide to pop in and say hello.

I'm sure she will. :)

BOHEMIAN!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY (http://www.imagemagician.com/images/blossom/Bohemian.gif)

Thanks all for the links to Sin City and Hooligans goodies - I'm enjoying looking at the trailers, am deleriously happy about all the positive reviews for Elijah :) but doubt I'll actually see these films - too gory for my taste, I think.

BUT I CAN'T WAIT FOR EII!

Hobbityme - Nice to see you. Thanks for the link to the EII site. I'm off to look at that right now...

I like those, too--the natural "soft focus" is lovely. I'll have to experiment with my new program and see if there's some way to remove "hand wearing plastic glove with and without blood on it" from the picture. Maybe we'll get really fancy and even try to delete the "red filaments forming ominously in the water" in front of Casey's face. :haha:

Seriously surreal question ;) : Is the sunflower in Jonathan's mouth or did the picture just happen to catch the moment a falling sunflower is right in front of his face?

Well I think Jonathan is the source of those particular sunflowers! They represent his words, his writing of a better, more colorful world, where pain is all just a part of the beauty, where beauty can arise out of pain, and isn't senseless. Where the past is as necessary to the future as the future is to the past!

I love the surrealistic look of the poster, and the "leave normal behind" tagline. It suits the mood of the book so well. I've spent half the morning searching all over the 'net, 'cause I want one of those posters!

And I've come to love those glasses. It underscores that Jonathan is looking for answers, that he really wants to 'see' the truth, and isn't hiding from it. I'm hoping for one pivotal, heart-breaking scene where he takes them off, just for a moment , but then they go right back on. Because he can accept the truth of the past, because it's part his families past, his present, his families' future, the future of the human race, really

can you tell I'm looking forward to this movie a little bit? :)

honey!

Hello, Excited Persons! :D

It has been some week, but now that the thread looks as though it has calmed down for an hour or so, I thought I'd post the report Chickenlegs did of "An Evening With Peter Jackson" last week in Sydney. It was such a pleasure (an laugh) to read. :D I linked it in this thread but now it's in the Archives. It will have to be in two parts, as it is too long for K-D text boxes.

P.S. If any of you are starting a re-reading of LotR, we Frodo-ites in TORc's Fandom forum have started a new "read the books" discussion thread there, which only started today. I have been forever "missing the boat" on these threads when they start, finding out about them long after they have got underway. If you are interested, here's a link. P.S. "Zazinka" is actually Flourish.

An Evening With Peter Jackson, by Chickenlegs,

Part I

Well here is my summary of the Evening with Peter Jackson. Sorry for the brevity or length (depending on your preference.) It should be read after you have read the other thread already linked by Maewyn. I have tried to not repeat what they’ve already said unless I truly wanted to put my own spin on it or differ in my memory of what PJ said. Also I apologise if my summary comes across as disjointed. I’m terribly tired writing this and it’s kind of late at night now. So please forgive me. I might try to edit it later if I feel I can reword something. And also I hope it’s not too boring. I’ve tried not to get too carried away with detail.

May I just start off by saying that when I checked into my (rather luxurious) hotel situated just across the street from the theatre, the lift doors opened and there standing in the lift was Orlando Bloom. My jaw fell open, my tongue rolled across the floor and I almost wet my pants. I thought “Oh my God. Is he here too????!!!” Only..the thing is.. after 2 seconds I realised it wasn’t actually Orlando Bloom. It was just another incredibly beautiful, brown-eyed boy with chocolatey curls and amazing cheek-bones. Just as well I realised in time, otherwise I might have had to be hurled away by the hotel security guards for attacking young men half my age in a public place.

Anyway… on with the story..

I arrived about 10 minutes beforehand. The street was crowded with hundreds of people queuing to pick up their tickets so there was a real buzz outside the theatre. Hundreds more were also making their way into the theatre and once I got inside I saw that the threatre was filling up rapidly. I was about 14 rows back and had a wonderful view of the stage.

To one side of the stage two arm chairs were set up and a big screen occupied the rest of the screen. This was currently showing some looped footage promoting the movie exhibition currently showing at the Powerhouse Museum. We see Frodo falling on his (rather pretty) rear end in the Prancing Pony, reaching up toward the camera as the ring drops onto his (rather pretty) finger, then the image changes to the ring tumbling down to a map of Australia, then to Sydney, ker-splat onto the Powerhouse Museum. Then the whole thing repeated again, and again, and again. I think I watched Frodo fall on his butt about a hundred times waiting for the proceedings to start. Did I mention that not once did I get bored with watching Frodo fall on his (very very pretty) rear? Darlings I was MESMERISED!!

The proceedings began with a (thankfully) brief intro from the head of the Museum named somebody or other who then introduced us to David Stratton, arguably Australia’s most respescted and preeminent film critic came on to host the night. This was a delightful surprise. David came on and then introduced the Super-Trailer which ended with tumultuous applause (started enthusiastically by myself I’m proud to say). He then introduced Peter Jackson.I immediately leapt to my feet to give him a standing ovation.

Dear Reader, I was the only one. Everyone else's bottom was glued firmly to their seats which I thought was quite rude. Afterall every person in the audience was there I would bet because PJ’s films have given them a deeply profound cinematic experience. We all know what an inspiration he was to his cast and creative team. The man is a genius of creativity and leadership. But oh no, in apathetic Australia that obviously isn’t enough for my fellow countrymen to get off their backsides and show some appreciation for this man who’s interrupted his busy schedule to fly over the Tasman to do his fans a favour. And favour it is – it’s not like he needs the money or the publicity is it? Anyway….. Just bugs me how Hollywood leaps to its feet for just about anyone who lives long enough to get the SAG pension, but in Australia we can’t likewise honour a fellow Antipodean film-maker who truly deserves to be celebrated. (End of rant!) Thank goodness he got an immediate standing ovation at the end of the evening. Left me with some shred of hope for this place I live in.

Peter is (physically) about a third of the man he once was. He’s not exactly trim taut and terrific but he’s definitely more up and down than round and round. He was dressed in a loose fitting short-sleeved shirt of red, yellow and black squiggles and shapes and khaki pants with brown sneakers. He’s either had laser surgery on his eyes or is now wearing contacts ‘cos the big oversized glasses seemed to have gone for good. Still the same is his wild black hair and beard. He looked for all the world like a naturalist just come back from studying bugs in the Amazon.

Amid the welcoming applause he walked quietly on stage, stood to acknowledge the crowd with a few nods of his head then took his chair with David Stratton. Throughout the almost 2 hour interview he gave the impression he was quite tired – not exhausted though. But never did he stint in giving us as much detail in his answers as possible. It was the same attention to detail that he gave us in directing LOTR.

As already stated in the other review, David started off by getting PJ to take us through how he got into movie-making to beging in with. I could elaborate more on this but I don’t want to be too verbose. However if anyone’s interested in knowing more I’m happy to write up as much as I can remember.

The most interesting information he gave was a real behind the scenes look at just how much he and Fran went through to make these movies a reality and how much fate seemed to be working in their favour at crucial steps along the way. Although he has talked about this previously never before has he elaborated to the extent he did on how close we came to having another director and team of writers make the film for Miramax. He even described in detail the ludicrous 3 page treatment tabled at their meeting by Harvey Weinstein for a one-movie version of LOTR (imagine Gondor and Rohan as one civilisation and the Mines of Moria totally excluded with the only reference to it being Frodo uttering the line “Gee that was exciting!") If not for the 11th hour plea by Peter and Fran’s agent to Harvey Weinstein, the LOTR film (not films) would have been a farce. This is a really interesting although lengthy story for which I can provide more detail than is provided in the other summary. So again, if anyone is interested I’m happy to post more. This is quite a sad yet at times funny anecdote. Peter had us both shaking our heads in dismay and roaring with laughter.

An Evening With Peter Jackson, by Chickenlegs,
posted in TORc's Frodo/Elijah Swoon thread, 3/14/05, p. 5

Part II

During the evening Peter twice stopped his story-telling to comment at length on the cast - their qualities as human beings and artists. He didn't single anyone out, but spoke quite earnestly and with feeling. As soon as he started to pay tribute to them, the audience broke out in spontaneous applause. It was a magic little moment.

To break the evening up, Peter showed three blooper reels from a DVD he’d made up for himself. He said he'd never shown this DVD to anyone else and we were the first to see it. Although I’m sure these bloopers were the ones shown to the actors after each filmed his/her last scene. In truth, it was not so much a blooper reel as mostly a series of parodies of the film scenes conceived and performed by the cast and crew themselves. If you’re thinking it was probably n a parr with World’s Funniest Bloopers and such, well, it left those kinds of gaffs for dead. These were side-splittingly funny to the point where you could hardly hear the dialogue sometimes over the screams of hysterical laughter from the audience. We were almost rolling in the aisles!

I’ll only mention those that the other poster decided to ommit, or that, in my opinion deserve further elaboration, or that I actually remember rather differently. I can’t even remember exactly what order they were shown in, so I’ll just note them here in the order I scribbled them down afterwards.

The first gag-scene as I remember it was the scene from ROTK where Pippin wakes to sneak a look at the Palantir only this time we see Merry lying under the blankets on his pallet with what seems to be a two foot high erection. Pippin rushes over all excited. At this point it was impossible to hear what the actors were saying over the audience laughter. Then Pippin jumps under the covers with Merry, calls out “Nighty Night” and they proceed to get frisky together under the blankets!

Another sight-gag started with the camera moving up the steps of a cast trailer and moving inside. At the end of the trailer in the bedroom we see Merry and Pippin with their pants down seemingly examining each other’s privates. On the bed partly obscured from view is a blow-up doll. Once Merry and Pippin realise they are being watched they quickly pull up their pants and attempt to hide the blow up doll under the bed covers, looking very sheepish and guilty.

One of the actual bloopers shown was from the scene where Frodo is caught suspended in the webs in Shelob’s lair where he frantically tries to cut himself free. Only in this take, the straps on his arms that keep Elijah held up break and he’s left to swing back and forth by one strap holding his body up. Elijah realising how silly he looks, gives a dumb-founded look at the camera and immediately bursts into hysterical laughter – although I must say NOT the high-pitched, squirrel-on-speed giggles you might expect. This giggling was a few octaves lower thank goodness! Very cute!

When the four hobbits crack open their champagne bottles at the Minas Tirith wedding scene (refer other post linked by Maewyn), Elijah drank greedily from his, then let most of it spew back out of his mouth like a fountain. Very dirty and messy. He seemed to really enjoy doing this, the little tyke!

As mentioned in the other post, Elijah chews on the rabbit flesh in the Rabbit Stew scene. But he did it with such gusto and abandon grabbing the flesh between his teeth, as did Gollum in the movie, and yanking it to and fro really visciously. Again, he looked like he just loved doing it. I imagine he loved doing all this wild stuff for the camera just to break out of being lovely lamb-like Frodo for a few minutes and be the real boy’s boy we know he is.

Remember the anecdote told by Dom Monaghan in an interview a couple of years ago? About how awful all the hobbits were as horsemen? And how Elijah was the worst at being able to control his horse? And Sean being allergic to his horse and constantly sneezing? And how, during filming of the hobbits pony-ride back to Hobbiton, a female crew member, rolling her eyes at their ineptitude in comparison to Orlando and Viggo’s expertise, nicknamed the hobbit actors Grumpy, Sneezy, Dopey and Doc? Well, during the blooper reel we see Elijah’s inability to even keep his horse standing on the spot. We see the hobbits on their ponies, all lined up in a row gazing (we assume) upon Hobbiton. Only Elijah’s pony decides to go into reverse gear. The pony starts moving backwards suddenly and just as it moves out of shot actually rears up on it’s hind legs. But not once does Elijah lose character, keeping in place his serious thoughtful expression. Next minute it cuts to show a less-than-impressed horse wrangler pulling the pony back into shot with a bashful looking Elijah still on board.

There was also a shot of Elijah falling on his butt in Shelob’s lair and skulking down in amongst all the filth and cobwebs terrified of being attacked. We see him contort his face in an expression of dread and terror, and he holds that expression… and holds it.. and holds it … and holds it … and, as the camera draws closer…he’s still holding it… until suddenly he becomes self-conscious, gets the giggles and pulls a face at the camera.

There was take after take of Frodo watching Sam and Rosie’s wedding with Elijah trying desperately to hold his expression. The reason for his failure becomes clear when Dom sticks his face up close to Elijah’s.

I remember rather differently, the blooper scene where Sam comes back to No 3 Bagshot Row and is welcomed by Rosie, Elanor and little Frodo. Sean is carrying Ally and is desperately trying to get her to do what Peter wants. When he says “Can you do that for me?” Ally says quie adamantly “NO!” (not yes as described in the other thread) . Then Sean kisses Rosie and both kids scream with that volume that only young kids seem to manage. Sean drops Ally to ground and gives a weary look to the camera as if to say “Kids!!!”

Some of the other funny stuff not mentioned in the other summary was a shot of Merry and Pippin snogging a dead orc’s head at the Fangorn forest sequence. They’re on the ground with the orc head in front of them. Dom puts his mouth over the orc’s mouth as if giving CPR while Billy pumps it’s skull with both hands, the way you’d pump someone’s chest if giving CPR. Then Dom sticks his tongue in the orc’s mouth., then Billy sticks his tongue in its mouth. It was all very rude and disgusting – and very very funny!

In the absence of PJ directing so many of the scenes first hand it seems the cast and crew decided it would be funny to make an effigy of PJ to fill in for him. So there were many takes that ended with one of the crew pushing this PJ dummy in front of the camera while another crew member waved the dummy’s arms around. The cast would be saying “What did you think of that Peter?” and the dummy would appear in front of the camera yabbering some jibberish, arms flapping about. “Oh really Peter? You don’t say?” It looked so much like him as well. A really good characacture complete with wild black hair and drawn on glasses.

There was also a shot of three actors in Uruk-hai make-up singing “You made me feel like a natural woman” which was hysterical.

There was a LOT of filthy language especially from Liv Tyler. In a scene where she’s talking to Elrond, I think about reforging the shards of Narsil, she suddenly breaks character as her hair falls in front of her eyes for the thousandth time and says rather heatedly “Oh this f**king hair!” Of all scenes showing actors saying the F word not once are we shown Elijah doing this, which seems odd considering how the word proliferates his everyday conversation. PJ remarked before he showed the first reel that he didn’t want to bleep out the language as it just wouldn’t have been as funny. So he apologised in advance to any audience members how might take offence.

I loved one gag where Aragorn steps out of his tent at the encampment of the Rohan at the Firienfeld, cracks open a tinny (can of beer to non-Aussies) and slugs it back. When someone off camera calls out “Aragorn” he lets out a long low belch and exits the shot.

The gag-reels finished with Christopher Lee reciting an Aussie Lord’s Prayer (all dressed up as Saruman) in the most authentic sounding Aussie accent (no small achievement). This version was apparently written circa 1931 and had many references to Sir Don Bradman and the building of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. It was brilliant! This capped off the night and PJ left the stage with a standing ovation from the audience with the kind of cheering normally reserved for rock stars.

Well the upshot is – I think I am in love and I want to have PJ’s babies. And yes I was secretly wishing Elijah would somehow materialise out of the darkness of stage left as a surprise for Peter and a gawk-fest for us Frodophiles down under. But this did not happen. Nor, I must unhappily report, did he materialise in the lift of my hotel. Rotten luck really.

Any questions?

Mech, thanks so much for sharing that report from Chickenlegs with us. I had already read it over at Torn - where I tend to lurk in the Frodo/Elijah thread - but it's full of humour and really well written, and very Frodo-centric. I'm sure anyone here who has not seen it will be delighted. Thanks again. :)

I'd love to see the Elijah bloopers.

Only Elijah’s pony decides to go into reverse gear. The pony starts moving backwards suddenly and just as it moves out of shot actually rears up on it’s hind legs. But not once does Elijah lose character, keeping in place his serious thoughtful expression.

He's so professional, isn't he? I recall the clip in the TTT extras, when they were filming the 'Frodo snapping at Sam' scene, and the NZ army set off some explosives. There was an enormous BANG, but Elijah, in the middle of his performance, just kept going.

Reading about PJ and co's talks with Miramax - OMG! What the LOTR FILM - singular - could have ended up as doesn't bear thinking about! No mines of Moria!!! Gondor and Rohan merged!!! Despite all the little nitpicks we have with PJ's films, it's clear we owe him a huge debt of gratitude!

Blossom, I am glad these were posted at TORn. I rarely look at TORn, so I did not see they were posted there. Anyway, just in case some people here didn't get the chance, here is the last part of Chickenleg's riveting report of "An Evening With Peter Jackson" in Sydney. Again, it is too long to fit in one text box, so I'll have to split it.

An Evening With Peter Jackson--On How the Films Nearly Weren't Made. Report by Chickenlegs posted 3/15/05 in TORc's swoon thread, p. 5:

Part I

Well you guys asked for it. And here it is - my summaryof Peter's account regarding the whole saga of bringing LOTR the Trilogy to the screen. It is long, I know - so I won't be offended if many feel they don't want to bother reading it all. I can be a bit of skimmer myself!

*******

PJ explained the long drawn out and often heart-breaking process of getting these films off the ground. Challenges were thrown at Peter and Fran that would certainly daunt less courageous and committed people. And quite often, as PJ explained, fate just seemed to be on their side. It almost seemd that they were meant to make these films. Peter explained how, looking back on this sequence of events, he can see all the bits of the puzzle click into place at critical points in time.

How did PJ and Fran come to the point of wanting to film LOTR anyway? In the early to mid 90s (let's say it was around 1995 although my memory may be wrong here), Peter and Fran were kicking round the idea of making a fantasy film. They didn't just want to film any old fantasy story. It had to be the right kind of story. As we know PJ can't stand magic in the movies e.g. wizards with lighting bolts fired from magic wands etc. LOTR became their benchmark, although at this stage they never seriously considered actually filming it. Fran kept saying "well it needs to be a story LIKE LOTR". Then one day, in the absence of finding a story that hit the mark, they finally decided that if it had to be like LOTR they may as well actually film that story. PJ mentioned that he first read the book when he was about 17 or 18 during his train commutes to work into Wellington each day. And even though he loved the book he never became such a fan whereby he read it over and over. He felt it was such an immense and detailed piece of work it would be too overwhelming to read it repeatedly.

Anyway, when they finally got the idea, they had to first take it to Miramax because Peter and Fran were under a First Look contract with them. Following the success of Heavenly Creatures which was produced by Miramax, they were under contract to give Miramax first refusal at any new project they came up with in the 3 years following HC. The first major hurdle was securing the rights.

Saul Zaentz held the rights to the LOTR books which he'd bought off the Tokien estate back in the 70s. Saul had refused numerous proposals from other directors, writers, studios who wanted to film the books. PJ mentioned that initially he and Fran had wanted to make The Hobbit and then, if that was a success, move on to film the LOTR trilogy. The difficulties that prevented them securing the rights to the The Hobbit are the same ones preventing that film getting off the ground today. So LOTR it had to be.

As luck would have it Saul owed Harvey Weinstien (head of Miramax) a favour. Harvey had bailed out The English Patient when Saul lost backing prior to The English Patient commencing shooting. First click of the puzzle! So Saul gave in and agreed to let Miramax develop LOTR.

Miramax funded development of the LOTR movie concept to the tune of $12 million dollars. For 18 months Peter and Fran and the creative team at Weta along with Alan Lee and John Howe, developed the script, conceptual designs and built models including Rivendell which was the one used in the films. By mid 1996 they were ready to pitch the finished concept and seek approval from Miramax to start production on the movies. PJ and Fran had developed two scripts for two movies and budgeted that each movie would cost $120 million to make $240 m in total. The first movie would end with the battle of Helm's Deep with the second movie pretty much covering the same ground as the film we know it today.

Unfortunately, Miramax parent company Disney had only given Harvey authority to approve movie projects up to a limit of $75 million. And Harvey unfortunately saw LOTR as ONE, 2 HOUR movie!!

Peter painted a rather vivid picture of how he and Fran flew to New York to pitch the idea to Harvey. Imagine our two kiwi heroes esconced in a un-air-conditioned, stuffy boardroom in New York with no windows, being intimated or rather bullied by Big Harvey into bowing to Miramax's idea of how LOTR should be developed. Both he and Fran were trembling with shock and emotion as Harvey proceeded to tell them in no uncertain terms that Miramax would only fund ONE film that ran no longer than 2 hours. Peter and Fran tried to reason with Harvey that there was no way this story could be condensed so drastically. They told Harvey that if Miramax went ahead with that idea they would disappoint every Tolkien fan who went to see the movie. They just kept telling Harvey it was impossible for them to make a 2 hour film.

That's when Harvey produced is Ace card. Impossible he told them? I think not. Harvey then laid on the table a 3 page document which was a 2 hour treatment of LOTR. Peter told us that he wished so much he had brought the document with him as he still has it. He said we would have really appreciated how ludicrous the treatment was. Imagine if you will an LOTR movie which completely deletes the whole Mines of Moria sequence. (At this point there were mass uttereances of outrage from the 2000 strong audience). The only reference to the Mines of Moria was the Fellowship sitting round talking about it with Frodo saying something like "Gee that was exciting". Miramax's logic was that the audience don't need to see something if the characters just talk about it happening!

Miramax's other brainwaves for condensing the story were to merge the civilisations of Gondor and Rohan into one. (More outrage from the audience) And merging the characters of Denethor and Theoden. (By this stage the audience were laughing at the ridiculousness of it all.)

OK, here's the rest:

An Evening With Peter Jackson[/B]--On how the films nearly weren't made at all.
Report by Chickenlegs posted 3/15/05 in TORc's swoon thread, p. 5:

[B]Cont'd...

Peter and Fran were gutted (to use David Stratton's suggested description). They told Harvey they could not possibly be a part of that. Harvey told them it's either Miramax's way or Miramax would film it without Peter and Fran's or Weta's involvement. They would get their own director, namely John Madden who had helmed Shakespeare in Love.

He gave Peter and Fran one (or was it two) weeks to think about what they wanted to do.

They left the meeting shaking and in shock. They immediately went to the home of a director friend of theirs who lived in New York. PJ was shaking so badly he asked his friend to give him a Scotch. PJ said he'd never had a Scotch before in his life, but he'd seen so many movies where they have a Scotch to calm their nerves, so he thought he'd better have one too. (It was so cute and funny when he said that! I just wanted to give him a big hug).

Finally they flew back to New Zealand still not knowing what to do. I think PJ said it was Fran's birthday so they went somewhere special for that and were walking along the beach. It was then that they finally made the tough decision to let LOTR go. They knew they just couldn't live with making it Miramax's way and it was better to just give it up. They'd rather have nothing to do with it. Tough! But I think we'd all agree it was the right decision for them.

So they phoned their agent Ken Cameron to ask him to phone Harvey and let him know they're answer was no. But unbeknownst to Peter and Fran good ole Ken, as well as telling Havey "No", also put in a last ditch plea with the Miramax boss to make him see reason.

Ken pleaded with Harvey to allow Peter and Fran the opportunity to at least take their LOTR concept to another studio. Afterall, he told Harvey, they brought the idea to you, it wasn't the other way around.

Harvey finally gave way, but he put a seemingly impossible proviso on the deal. He told Ken they had only 4 weeks to find another studio and that studio had to agree to repay Miramax the $12 million already spent by Miramax in development. What a lovely civilised chap he seems!

When Peter and Fran got the news they immediately swung into action. Four weeks? Ok here was their plan of action:

Week One - Make a documentary on the making of LOTR - Ok the film hadn't actually been filmed as yet, but this had to be a doco they promoted their script, ideas and designs to the max. The doco included interviews of all the production team, so they were like, filming themselves interviewing themselves!

Week Two - Meetings with all the major studios in LA. Only trouble is, of all the studios they had written to, only two were interedsted in actually meeting Peter and Fran to watch the doco.. The rest had rejected them outright. They weren't even slightly interested.

The two studios interested were Polygram and, of course, New Line.

The met with Polygram early in the week. Polygram, being a British company were very interested. They wanted the movie to be associated with a British studio, because of course it's a British story. They liked Peter and Fran's script, doco and concept and wanted to go with it. Only problem was, Polygram was involved in a take-over bid from another studio/corporation (can't remember which one) at that point in time. They had no authority to give the go ahead to any project until a few more months had elapsed. But unfortunately as we know, Peter and Fran didn't have a few months up their sleeve. They only had four weeks (thanks to Harvey!).

In the meantime, they were playing a rather dangerous game with New Line, the other company who had agreed to see them. Peter and Fran purposely cancelled meeting after meeting with New Line. Foolhardy you may say, but it was all part of their Cunning Plan! By cancelling several meetings they were playing a game of smoke and daggers whereby New Line would be tricked into thinking every other studio in town was hustling to take on LOTR. Finally on their very last day in LA they met with New Line.

Mark Odesky was there and I think Bob Shay (correct me gurus if I have that wrong which I probably do). It was a daunting experience again for Peter and Fran. As with Miramax the meeting took place in a stuffy, un-air conditioned boardroom. They felt Mark Odesky was onside but just couldn't read the reaction from Bob Shay who said not a word as Fran and Peter showed him all the sketches and designs that their team had developed so far and then played their hastily prepared documentary. Finally at the end of the documentary, Bob Shay turned around and said something along the lines of "You want to make two films? We can't make this in two films. *PREGNANT PAUSE as Peter and Fran's hearts sink to their boots* This is THREE FILMS!!"

Yes New Line wanted to take it on and Yes they would pay Harvey Weinstein is $12 million bucks. LOTR was back on track!! YAY!!!

And of course the rest is history as they say.

(Phew!)

I just got a new image editing program that I'm still learning how to use, so there's lots to play with. I put the results on a webpage (http://www.frodolivesin.us/Pics/id12.htm) that's not linked to the main part of the site.

Wow, love the "framed" photos - it really dresses them up. Makes our lad look even more handsome (how is that possible?).

From someone who went to an advanced screening of "Sin City":

Elijah does a GREAT job as Kevin. Those big, wide eyes of his are put to effective use.

And don't worry about the fighting scenes. They're terrific.

ETA: Ellen's website now says that Lij will be playing a game in the audience during his appearance on Wednesday. That should be fun. And is the prize...HIM???? LOL

Err, yeah. I'm like totally a Faculty laggard now. It's not even funny how many pages behind I am. :) But I'm still thinking of you guys, and still figuring if there's ever a Faculty moot in Australasia, then the fried anchovies are gonna be on me. :D :haha:

And in fact, right here in Kuala Lumpur, there's a certain Elijah thing cropping up. A rather disturbing thing, actually. Something that really shouldn't have been allowed to happen. But, happened it has. And ... oh, please, be sure you have a strong constitution before clicking on this. This ... this ... premiere of the animated movie that shall not be named (http://www.astro.com.my/v5/programming/channels/abo_movies/05/03/21/8.asp) :o

Things are going so well. Why? Why must this resurface here? It's being advertised during prime time too. They're actually showing the trailer!

I agree. My favourite is the one with "burled wood" effect - it seems as if his special eyebrow acting spreads all over the frame. Very nice. ~~ Aha - "eyebrow squinch = burled Wood" :p

Remember the part of the "son of a strongman" for Elijah which we've discussed waaay back?
Well, in case this movie should ever see the light of day, Magritte could easily also be used for this one as reference, poster-wise -

Yes, Achila. This from one of those AICN Sin City reviews:

Edited - original review contains some strong language.
I can go on and on about the performances, because there is not a weak link in the cast. However, three really stick out for me. The first is Mickey Rourke, who simply IS Marv. That is the highest praise available, because he is Marv in this film. The second is Clive Owen, who I can now safely say is one of my favorite actors, period. He makes Dwight somehow sympathetic and vicious at the same time, a perfect incarnation of the character in the comic book. Third, and most surprisingly, is Elijah Wood. Before going into the screening, I looked at my friend and said, "There is no way Elijah Wood can play a cannibal and seem the least bit menacing." I now feel like the dumbass that I deserve to be, because, wow. He is so, so scary and menacing, yet it seems like it comes natural to him, which is what makes it scarier. There is a scene that he has with Marv that I cannot even describe in words. Wood's performance in this scene is simply remarkable.

Good Morning, Faculty!

whiteling, eyebrows and burled wood, indeed! Groan!!

Ainon, the intro to Tom probably explains the surfacing of TAMTSNBN; "LOTR's Elijah Wood."

tg, shall a future homework assignment be a comparison and contrast of Frodo's and Kevin's smirks?

Sunflowers stand for adoration. Not sure how this applies to the EII poster.

honey! – Thanks for the Kevin screencap. I got to see the “making-of” short at Achila’s, but it’s always good to have a still to examine more closely. Definitely creepy. For some reason, the hands strike me as especially creepy (and some of you may remember that I’m a real fan of those hands). They are given particular prominence in the picture (esp. the right one); and when you consider that he’s a serial killer, it makes you wonder what he does with them. . . .

Also, it almost looks as if there is some sort of magnification on his eyes in that picture. Is it the glasses (a la Jonathan)? Or a special effect? Or just me?

Back to the topic of hands – EandMe, I’ve always assumed that he’s right-handed. But I did notice that in Chain of Fools, when he’s preparing to shoot Bollingsworth in the hospital, he’s holding the gun in his left hand. But then I decided that may have just been for the sake of the scene’s visual composition. (Mikey is standing on B’s right, and would look rather awkward pointing the gun with his right hand.) I also think that he uses his left hand when he dials the phone in “Miss Cocoa”’s apartment.

BTW -- Happy birthday, Bohemian!

From review excerpt posted by Blossom:

There it is--Elijah acting like his character comes natural to him. So, like, people maybe didn't think he had to ACT to play Frodo because it all came so naturally. If they saw this first, would they think, wow, that Elijah Wood character must be a real scary creep in real life---it comes so natural to him!! ;) Thankfully for us, though it seems that though it took a lot of acting to play Frodo, Elijah as a person actually is closer to Frodo than to Kevin by eons of light years. Yeah, for people who only see him in Sin City, they might be afraid to meet him in a dark alley. Since being menacing
seems to come to him so naturally! :haha: That can't be acting

He is just going to blow people away. Somehow, I've got to get my stomach ready for the violence and I've just got to see this film!

If they saw this first, would they think, wow, that Elijah Wood character must be a real scary creep in real life---it comes so natural to him!!
*sigh* So true. So many people always assume they know more than they do. And an amazing number seem to have difficulty separating their impressions from reality. I'm just laughing at an imagined scene, of Elijah planning his career with his agent. "So, what I really need is some sort of mass-murderer cannibal thing. Got one of those?" :p

Mechtild, I will read your Chickenlegs PJ segment the next time I return to the computer. Thank you for posting those here! I really adore her description of the bloopers. And, without reading the details yet, I feel so grateful that PJ was doing these movies, and we didn't get the Miramax 1 movie travesty. REALLY grateful! I've been listening to the commentaries, and appreciating how much PJ really did want to bring the actual story to life. He didn't always succeed for me, but I feel so grateful to him right now I've ceased to care. He brought us 3 films and he gave us Frolijah. I'm extremely grateful. *falls to knees and weeps*

Tg, I also love your piccies. I am particularly drawn to the coin pic. Frodo is good as gold, and is also legal tender. Yea! :haha:

Hey, ainon  ! :k to seeing you drop in. to the news you brought. Does this mean [shudder] we're talking about it being seen in theaters :( ?

Edited - original review contains some strong language.
What?! At AICN? To quote another of my favorite un-tall actors, "I'm shocked, I tell you, just shocked!" ;)

from Alyon:
Yeah, for people who only see him in Sin City, they might be afraid to meet him in a dark alley.
Wasn't it Pelagia who started out with an intense dislike of Elijah because the first character she saw him play was McPhee?

Also reminds me of Elijah's statement that if he watches a movie he's made and doesn't see himself on the screen, he knows he did a good job.

And speaking of Pelagia ;) :
Also, it almost looks as if there is some sort of magnification on his eyes in that picture. Is it the glasses (a la Jonathan)? Or a special effect? Or just me?
The glasses seem to be a recognizable part of the book character, as are the l-o-o-n-g fingernails, so I'm guessing they'll be fairly prominent for the movie character, too.

from ceefour:
Ainon, the intro to Tom probably explains the surfacing of TAMTSNBN; "LOTR's Elijah Wood."
Oh, no doubt in my mind--the same reason that TAMTSNBN languished for two years (wherever unreleased DVDs/VHS languish) only to be released on the very same day the first (theatrical version) FotR DVD was released. I'm sure this was entirely coincidental  , as were the stickers with Elijah's name on them that were slapped on the front of the "Tom" DVDs in a lot of stores that day. Dare we think that if Elijah hadn't become so well-known TAMTSNBN might never have seen the light of day? Ah, the price of fame ;) .

BTW, rewatching The Faculty I had a chuckle over Zeke selling what he said were tapes of Elijah's "leading lady" in TAMTSNBN, with a promise to buyers of "full frontal nudity." Back then, which would have been about the same time the animated movie was made, she was the "name."

Mechtild, thanks for the link to the LotR discussion thread at TORC. (Can I say that I shudder to even type those four letters? I'm very afraid of TORC--but that does seem to be a friendly thread :z: .) I tried to register only to be told that my user name had already been taken by "another member"--which was myself, of course  . Back when movie news was first coming out, I registered at a number of places I haven't been back to since. My only problem with the thread is that I could write pages just responding to what's already been said, much less bringing up anything new. This reading is expected to take several years, isn't it? :p

Thanks, too, for posting the account of PJ's talk. One thing that was a surprise to me was that it was Peter and Fran who held off the meeting with New Line until the deadline was almost upon them. That's one of the things I'd always heard attributed to "fate" (aka the intercession of St. J. Ronald): "...and New Line agreed to meet with them at the very last minute!" Of course, St. J. Ronald would have been perfectly capable of pulling off the "plot" PJ and Fran were running, so maybe he had something to do with the success of that, too. [I don't use smilies after saying something about St. J. Ronald, because I don't want people to think I'm not totally serious!]

...Hmmm... I'll have to take another look at that burled wood. Maybe when I chose that frame, I was being subconsciously affected by the eyebrow squinches ;) . [That reminds me--I don't have time to say much about it right now, but a science magazine I subscribe to recently ran an article on the same micro-expression researchers we've heard about before. I'll try to say more later.]

Charles Manson was only 5'2". Pee Wee Gaskins, who killed several dozen people in SC and even killed one on Death Row for hire (an exploding radio, of all things) was as short as his name implies. Height has nothing to do with being evil.

tgshaw: I just got around to looking at the first results of your new image program. Oh, my! Especially the Casey pix. And I think EJW’s classic features look very appropriate on a gold coin – could be Augustus, or Alexander.

And yes, tg, you’re correct;
Wasn't it Pelagia who started out with an intense dislike of Elijah because the first character she saw him play was McPhee?
I figure that being afflicted with acute Elijaholism is my punishment for this.

[B]Mechtild – I add my thanks to those of others, for your posting of “Chickenlegs”’s account. I was a bit worried at the beginning, by her Orlando-swoon in the second paragraph; but all misgivings were dispelled as soon as her appreciation of various “very pretty” aspects of Frolijah became clear. I do hope that PJ brings out a blooper/outtake DVD sometime!

Bohemian -- Since dogs are, IMHO, very fine and noble creatures, I don't think it's at all odd to speak of them in the same breath as Elijah. Achila was telling me a while back about a discussion she had read, of what breed of dog would be appropriate for each actor (not character) in an all-canine LOTR. (Oh, god -- shades of Mechtild's all-lemur production.) Anyway, we agreed that Elijah should definitely be a Jack Russell terrier: small, lively, intelligent, active. (Comparative photos, anyone??)

I've been wondering what my reaction will be to Kevin. I'll have to admit to a certain degree of fondness for Elijah. So what will it be like to see him do scary? Will he scare me? I know it will take me a few minutes just to recover from the shear delight of seeing him on the big screen again!

I remember watching Patrick, and knowing I shouldn't really like him, but unable to help myself. I was largely embarrassed for him, and only really wanted to shake him when he was rifling through his back-pack full of Joel's memories.

I'm really enjoying reading all the early reaction to Sin City on movie message boards. One person on RottenTomatoes asked of "Frodo" can do evil/scary? Several folks pointed out that Frodo couldn't, but Elijah most certaintly can! (Hmmm, guess they missed his chilling ring-posession moment in RoTK.) It's great watching all these hardened comic book readers gain new respect for "that kid with the big eyes!"

Elijah is a strong, self-possessed young man. Everyone seems to have this perception of him as slightly soft. Partly because, until now, he's played mostly "good guys," and they've been all mostly passive ones. . We are all astonished when the rare report of Elijah snapping at a too-inquisitive fan crops up. But it's there, a strong will, a quick intelligence that nothing gets past. I expect he's quite ready to be seen as multi-faceted. And I'm quite ready to watch it!

The air was growing very warm again. The hobbits ran about for a while on the grass, as he told them. Then they lay basking in the sun with the delight of those that have been wafted suddenly from bitter winter to a friendly clime, or of people that, after being long ill and bedridden, wake one day to find that they are unexpectedly well and the day is again full of promise.

Morning, all!

Grumpy, Wood, I think you are right, Elijah has to be a cat :D I've just discovered the Googles Ad on this page:

Without touching - how boring! ;)

For a truly cuddly "Elijah Wood" check this site: Little Trolls (http://www.aliciatrolls.de/elijah_wood.htm)

Whiteling--aww, what a cutie (I mean the link, not your new avatar--that's beyond cute :) ). And I say this as someone grumpy would have to run from--dog person to the core! :p As is Elijah, apparently ;) .

When I opened this page, the ad was "Jack Russell Terriers. Join free. 1000s of single beautiful pet owners." Hmmm... It's very nice and all that some pet owners are devoted enough to have only a single beautiful pet, but... ;)

Talking strictly personality, IMVHO Dom would be a dachshund. I spent many years with a half dachshund/half beagle, and I've confirmed this characteristic with friends who've lived with dachshunds, so I believe it was from that "half": Smart enough to know what they shouldn't do, but just self-willed enough to go ahead and do it anyway if they (think they) can get away with it. IMHO, whoever said, "A dog wants to please. It just needs to know what you want, and it'll obey," never met a dachshund! But then you turn around and they're so lovable you can't stay mad at them. (Any Dom fans who haven't seen Ezzie's latest pics in the Lost thread... well, go see them :D .) Like wood's dog, our Liza--not a dog's name? Whatta ya mean not a dog's name?--would come and lay her head in my lap if I was upset or sad. And when the family would pray the Rosary together at night (takes about 15 minutes), she'd come right over to me and nudge my hand--she knew she could get 15 minutes of uninterrupted petting :) . Willful but loving. [And regarding Dom, there's also that cave scene in Lost--dachshunds were bred for hunting in tunnels. :p ]

For Elijah, IMHO the Jack Russell is perfect. Besides the traits already listed (and most liikely because of them), they also seem to be the best canine actors. The dog on Frasier was played by a Jack Russell--and there was another recent-or-current program with a Jack Russell that I can't remember (I don't watch enough TV, I guess --is there a dog on Will and Grace? ). Besides their abilities, I think part of their acting charm is that they don't look like a hoity-toity "breed" but just look like, well, a dog... the way a dog should look. [Trying fiercely to fit that into a parallel with Elijah.] Well... That fits a character actor, doesn't it? Someone who can be the life and breath of the most noble literary character ever written, and then turn around and play a totally convincing cannibal? I'd like to see a hoity-toity "leading man" or "action star" do that!

Which leads me to Frodo. I will agree with grumpy that no breed of dog has enough nobility for Frodo. He would definitely have to be a mutt (Fallohide, Harfoot, and Elvish). And I mean that as the highest compliment.

Let me see if I could remember some of the others that my friend came up with -- (again, these aren't mine):

Orlando -- Golden retriever
Viggo -- Irish wolf hound
Billy -- Scottish terrier (kinda obvious!)
Sean Astin -- Basset hound

Darn -- I can't remember any of the others -- I'll ask her and let you know. They were interesting, although I didn't agree with some of them (Elijah, in particular, as I said). And I think the show you were trying to remember was "Wishbone", tg -- that had a jack russell in it as the lead character.

Back OT, here's an article from today's New York Daily News -- only a mention of our Lad but interesting info about Frank Miller and Sin City for us newly initiated -- http://www.nydailynews.com/front/story/291276p-249303c.html

Here you are - Sin City Kevin interpreted in traditional Chinese ink drawing technique!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0903/whiteling/sin_city_andy_lee.jpg

The artist's name is Andy Lee. I found the info on him rather interesting and thought I would post it here.
Andy Lee was born in Hong Kong April 16, 1974 in the year of the Tiger. He became an American citizen in 1980 and lived in both Chicago and Hawaii. Andy would return to Hong Kong every summer and attend summer schools there as well as visit his Grandparents.

Due to his unique living situation, Andy has always been a blend of Eastern and Western cultures. Early in his life, this uncle (a teacher) taught him Cha’an Buddhist splash style to “keep him out of trouble.” It became the basis for his outlook on life.

About the art: These paintings were done in the traditional Cha’an Buddhist splash style which originated in China, circa 13th century B.C. Emperor Cha’an ruled during this era, making this period the Cha’an Dynasty. The Emperor was very strict and domineering. He permitted only specific styles of art and literature to permeate throughout his country. Anything not approved was illegal. Linework was very tight and the spoken/written word was extremely structured.

Because of these strict regulations, there became a backlash of artistic expression. Buddhist monks who lived during these times used bamboo brush, sumi ink and rice paper to “meditate” with. They would splash paint onto the paper and interpret the splashes and wild strokes further by adding a few lines here and there to create a recognizable image. The monks were not prosecuted because the paintings were deemed religious tools. Chinese splash painting was invented this way.

Eventually, Buddhist missionaries migrated to Japan. Cha’an Buddhism became Zen Buddhism. The splash art style also transcended geographical boundaries as well. The Japanese popularized this way of painting. It was officially an artform and not just a religious practice anymore.

To paint in this way is to wander into the artists’ own psyche. Any splash that is interpreted arguably reveals thoughts deeper with the artist, much like dreams are interpreted today. Rorscach Tests share similar methods of interpretation.

Andy Lee received a B.A. in Fine Arts and a minor in Biology from Washington University, St. Louis, MO. With his knowledge of Western Art, he has combined Eastern and Western ways of thinking and painting into one of his first Modern Zen forms of painting.

from here (http://www.findandy.com/artforsale.cfm).
Hm. I think I need some time to digest this "Modern Zen form of painting" :D

Oh, wow -- thanks for the link to that artwork, Whiteling! I actually really, really like some of his stuff. I have a fondness for that style of painting, and to see these sorts of images interpreted that way is fascinating! Thank you.

Achila, thanks for the Sin City link. Note the description of Kevin as:
. . . a smiling, good-looking killer . . . .
The other day, Achila and I were agreeing that Kevin will be most effective without any prosthetics. I always think that evil is even more frightening (and more insidious) when outwardly beautiful. Which is why (as I’ve probably said here before) I would love to have seen Elijah’s and Macaulay Culkin’s roles in The Good Son reversed, with the truly innocent-looking Elijah as the psycho.

ceefour! The AKC description of the “Parson Russell” terrier sounds just like Elijah, to me! Especially:
"Expression: keen and direct, full of life and intelligence."
"Neck: clean and muscular."
And Mechtild, I should have known that we could count on you for an appropriate picture!

tg, like Achila, I assume that you’re thinking of Wishbone as the other famous TV Jack Russell. This was a brilliant (IMHO) children’s series on PBS, with the highly literate dog inserting himself into famous works of literature. The show won an Emmy for costume design, for the dog’s costumes!

Here was my own canine Fellowship (in addition to Elijah as Jack Russell):
Viggo – Gordon or Irish setter
Sean Bean – Irish wolfhound
Orlando Bloom – as Legolas, golden retriever; otherwise, cocker spaniel (the eyes)
Billy – Norwich terrier (or a West Highland White, if you want a Scottish connection)
Dominic – smooth-hair fox terrier
Sean Astin – boxer
John Rhys-Davies – basset hound
Ian McKellen – German shepherd (or possibly a Weimaraner)

I don't think a gimmick like 3D is the answer. Maybe for kids. For adults, we want good stories well told. Kids like to see things blown up. Adults like sparkling dialog. I can count the "sparkling dialog" films I've seen in the last 2 years on one hand. Clue, Hollywood?

Mechtild, Love the Four Terriers/Hobbits!

Off Topic, there is a raging debate going on over at AICN right now, about whehter 3D would get people's bums back in theater seats. Most are against it, including me. Spy Kids 3D gave me a headache! But "Harry Dahling" is suggesting it would prop up the "dying" art of film making. (Gee, I hope he's just being controversial for the sake of getting people to talk!) Don't know about you all, but my cinematic experience would be immensley improved if I didn't have to put up with cell phones, people carrying on conversations throughout the movie, and the disturbing sight of seven year olds attending R-rated films.

One of my husband's friends believes within the next 5 years we will be able to purchase - at a price - DVDs on the day the movie comes out in theater! Now that prospect excites me! I could have saved a wad if I'd been able to purchase RoTK on 12/17/2003, and watch it in the comfort of my own home as needed! And if your shoes sticking the the theater floor really completes the theate experience for you, you could still go out to see your films!

Beyond that, what would save movies for me? Well, if a certain actor appeared in every film... ;) I mean, since he has so far exhibited amazing taste in the film roles he chooses, they'd all be quality fare then, right? :D

Sorry to disagree, but that prospect leaves me cold. Much as I like the convenience of DVDs, there is nothing to compare with sitting in a darkened theatre, looking up at that big screen. I really regret never having seen FOTR in a theatre. And I keep praying that one of these days, somebody will decide that Philadelphia is a big enough market to warrant bringing the whole trilogy out in public again – even if it’s just in the original theatrical versions rather than the EEs.

Achila wrote:

I wouldn’t even mind paying the high prices if the films were better. But with most Hollywood “product” aimed at 18- to 29-year-old males, or whatever the prime demographic is thought to be, so much of what is churned out is pure dreck. And the triumph of chain multiplexes has created the seemingly illogical phenomenon of our having more theatres than ever, and fewer movies to watch in them. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve checked the listings for my “local” 10-theatre multiplex, and found that they were showing only about five movies, because a few blockbusters were booked into multiple theatres?

EandMe, thanks for those Billy pics. I snagged them and just made a whole slew of Billy fans very happy. :)

I can't imagine why they would make the DVD available the same day as a film is released. That just doesn't even make sense to me! Not that I'd mind that much; I don't get out to the theatre nearly as often as I'd like. But, still... some films are just MEANT for the big screen, you know? Watching them on a tiny (or even reasonably large) screen in one's living room just isn't the same, and would lessen the impact of a large number of films.

Hollywood just needs to remember how to be creative. I mean, sequel-itis (did we really need Dumb and Dumber-er?) and this obsession with re-making old TV shows are enough to keep me from going to films. Hollywood can be so clueless! :(

If my whole family agrees on one movie to see, it's so near $40.oo for the tickets alone that it's not worth mentioning the change. That's before we talk about snacks.

About a year ago we invested in a projector system, and my home screen is about 100" wide (actually, it's not a screen, just special paint which reflects the light.) The whole rig cost us little more than we would have paid for a regular flat screen TV at one of those warehouse stores.

I'm not saying it would be for everyone, but I'd happily pay a one-time fee of $50.oo, because I'd end up spending that much in the theater anyway, unless I went to a matinee. Of course it would have to be a movie I'd been really anticipating.

I find the whole theater experience extremely frustrating. I sat through Troy with a crying baby in the audience. (Afterward other audience members complained, and the offending parents could be loudly heard claiming "age discrimination!") I watched RoTK with a pair of amourous teen-agers in front of me. (I think the guy was there for the movie, and his girl-friend was not.) I've had people get incredibly pissed at me just because I LOOKED a plea for silence at them. It's ridiculous how rude people have gotten!

Theaters have to do something. Maybe they need to charge $12.oo a ticket, and bring back the ushers in their little monkey suits. Maybe if the whole thing felt more like an "event" people would respect the experience more.

Sorry. Last I'll say on this OFF Topic matter! :k

Are we marking spoilers about EiI? If we are this is a spoilerish reply to something Honeyelf mentioned from the book.

I had been wondering about what Honeyelf said a few days ago about how in Everything is Illuminated Alex tells Jonathan in his first letter that it is so sad that Jonathan's box, that meant so much to them both, was stolen on the train.

I had to go back and check this out. It IS true that it is THE box that they got from "Augustine". That realization, that slips right past us in the beginning of the book, just bowled me over. And it raises some thoughts about Jonathan's and Alex's changes throughout the book and what is revealed about their personalities.

Was the box really 'stolen' or did Jonathan...preferring his fantasies about Tachimbrod to the harsh realities, leave it behind? Is this one of the things that Alex realizes and is being angry with Jonathan about in his last letter to him when Alex speaks about Jonathan being a coward, and how Jonathan and his family, lives 'once removed' and that they are all in 'the proximity of love, and all disavow love'. Alex says that he 'wants to be a person who chooses more for rather than against.'

All this is fascinating because these characters are so complex and it will be such a delight to see Elijah play Jonathan who has so much going on inside that he is afraid to face and let out. In the book Jonathan breaks down when they find 'Augustine' and she tells them about the real Trachimbrod. Jonathan has to leave her house and go outside to get away from the pain of her story.

Does Jonathan really run away from facing the pain of his family's past or does he in reality do what Alex accuses him of not doing. By 'losing' the box is Jonathan choosing for a new life or is he running away from facing pain?
I don't know. But this story just gets better and better the more I go back and read parts of it over again.

I can't wait to see the wonderful job I know Elijah is going to do in portraying the very complex Jonathan. :)

Edit-Hi Honeyelf. We were posting qat the same time. ;)

ETA--Hobmom, I think the reason we started marking EiI book spoilers is because there are some people who've decided not to read the book until after they've seen the movie. (And, just to say, I didn't read Jonathan as someone who'd do that on purpose, but it's certainly open to interpretation.)

...there is nothing to compare with sitting in a darkened theatre, looking up at that big screen...
True for the LotR movies, definitely--the beacon-lighting scene (just as one example) is breath-taking on the big screen. IMHO, there are movies where it doesn't make such a big difference. An opening-day DVD release would give people another choice, and maybe shut down a few more movie screens.

I wouldn’t even mind paying the high prices if the films were better. But with most Hollywood “product” aimed at 18- to 29-year-old males, or whatever the prime demographic is thought to be, so much of what is churned out is pure dreck.
Of course, that's more or less who they thought the demographic was for LotR  . I was hoping that the LotR movies would show Hollywood that people would actually pay money to see good, well-made movies. But it seems they thought the lesson to be learned was that people would pay money to see big, historically-flavored battle epics with some good-looking guys in them. Not the same thing, I'm afraid. I remember Howard Shore talking about what a great thing it was to be brought into the process early, so that the music could really be an integral part of the movie, rather than the usual practice of being called in to slap a score onto a movie a few weeks before it's finished. After all the Oscars and Grammies had been won, did Hollywood ever figure out that's how it should be done? I don't remember the specifics, but I recall hearing about one composer who tried to work that way after he heard how well it had worked for HS, and it wasn't allowed.

I don't think I ever posted in the discussion about the interview with PJ, and the gratitude when seeing how things might have turned out. I completely agree--there were things I wish had been done differently, story-wise, but the attention and thought that went into everything from the casting decisions to the hand-made mugs at the Prancing Pony just shows, IMHO--there's no way to fake that, even with CGI. They ran out of time, but IMHO that's mostly because they never stopped trying to improve things until the time was up. And to take it even a step beyond Miramax--Just thinking of Frodo holding the Ring beside the Anduin, hearing Gandalf's voice and resolving to go forward... In order for us to have that scene, the screenwriters had to fight the New Line execs--who wanted Frodo to fight off a pack of orcs on his way to the boat! And, to stay on-topic, I remember either Fran or, I think, Philippa, saying how Elijah's acting in that scene let them know they'd made exactly the right decision.

I guess we're fortunate in that we have one multiplex, at least, that books a lot of "exclusive" showings of smaller films, evidently deciding that they can make a profit using one of their 24 screens for that--especially if they can get a lock on the movie so it's not shown anywhere else in town. That's where I saw ESOTSM; no other theater in town showed it. In a way, I feel as if I've adopted it as my theater, even though it's 12 miles away, because it's the one where I saw the midnight premier for each LotR movie (an experience that definitely cannot be reproduced by a DVD).

--------------

Maybe this has been mentioned already, but IMDb now has ads and the trailer for Sin City. (But that "making of" book still hasn't been released.)

Just popping in to relate what's going on on message boards all over de place -- Our Lad is a smash hit. From AICN to CHUD to Oscarwatch, every person, without fail, who has been to a Sin City screening, is raving about Elijah's performance as Kevin. Here are a few from CHUD:

Further, Elijah Wood is note perfect as Kevin. Probably the best part of the flick. All said an done, I am actually most interested in seeing Elijah Wood's Kevin more than any other performance. (fanboy who hasn't seen it yet, obviously)And the "scariest scene" debate? Whatever floats ya, man. But after KEVIN, Yellow Bastard just seems like a yellow retread who talks. Elijah Wood's Kevin is just amazing to watch as well.Elijah Wood was just creepy. I would have like to have seen more of a back-story on his character.

Look at what they say about EII:
Elijah Wood, by the way, is the one guy coming out of Lord of the Rings who seems to really be using his name well. He's taking roles in cool movies - sometimes small roles, like in Sin City - and I think the decisions he has made post-Frodo will give him the longest career out of the bunch.

honeyelf: I can empathize with your concern about movie ticket prices at the family level, and about rude audience behavior (which, fortunately, I haven't often encountered). On the other hand, many of us don't have room in our homes for a 100-inch screen! (Or much more than a 30-inch.)

One of the things that has always struck me, when I’ve listened to the commentaries by PJ/Fran/Philippa, is that they nearly always had well considered reasons for the changes that they made in Tolkien’s story. Many of the reasons had to do with pacing, and many just with the requirements of a medium very different from the printed page. But few of the changes seem to have been made lightly or frivolously (Legolas’s acrobatic scenes probably being key exceptions to this generalization). Even the much-maligned alteration of Faramir’s character and actions in TTT had a rationale.
I guess we're fortunate in that we have one multiplex, at least, that books a lot of "exclusive" showings of smaller films
The “local” multiplex to which I referred usually shows at least one “smaller” film (e.g., ESOTSM). And there’s a nearby chain theatre that shows things like Sideways and Bride and Prejudice. Best of all, my former boss (from my evil days as a consultant to the pharmaceutical industry) recently spearheaded a group to rescue a local theatre that was scheduled to be made into a sports club (!!). Instead, it has been turned into a “film institute” that concentrates on independent and foreign films. But it was quite a battle; and this is in an affluent Philadelphia suburb, with four colleges in the immediate area.

Achila – Thanks for the Kevin raves. Only 10 more days until we can see for ourselves! (Q: How many Elijah fans do you think will walk out of the movie after Kevin’s part is over?)

Oh Blossom! I'm dying of laughter here! What a way to go! And your Jack Russell is absolutely adorable! :k

Ladies, it's been a trying week--make that month--for me, but coming back from nearly a week's absence of internet access to this feast of news and pictures and reviews and the All-Canine plus maybe One Feline LOTR is positively the best medicine I can imagine! Thank you all so very much!

To paraphrase one of my LOTR heroes, Ngila Dickson: It thrills me beyond belief to see such praise and attention being lavished upon the One Lad. Sharing it all with other women of exquisitely honed taste is a treat for the soul.

Can anyone translate the review Moriarity at AICN posted about SC into English?

All you really need to know, c4, is this:

Elijah Wood is chilling as Kevin, an entirely silent character who is visually arresting and deadly.

Also, he liked it. :D: The short version of all of this is that Robert Rodriguez has come up with a wall-to-wall winner.

Thank you, Achila. I thought the author liked it, but I wasn't sure. (And he may want a referral from his primary physician to see a gastroenterologist.)

Thank you for all the Sin City snippets. I can't wait.

In relation to the theater experience vs home viewing, and what types of movies we are typically offered---- Once when I was cooing over Elijah's choice to go for independents....Ainon lamented to me that where she is, in Kuala Lumpur, she rarely gets to see independent movies--so they kind of hardly exist. DVDs are really expensive overseas. And from what I've been told, in most US cities, independents aren't regularly shown--(though certainly are accessable via dvds). If the blockbusters are all someone gets to see, I can see why people would lament the state of where films may be. My own perspective is that we have, I think, 9 art house movie theaters within 2 miles of my house, and many more throughout the city. I don't go to as many movies as my daughter does, but I love going into these small independent theaters with their cool atmospheres--and that experience is something so different than watching a dvd in my home. And there really are some good movies. Kids I know who are into film have very intelligent discussions about all these smaller movies, often from around the world (Oh--I add my recommendation for The Motor Cycle Diaries, by the way). There are good movies being made...but how to see them in most cities??? There have been experiments with direct digital broadcast to theaters that would allow independents to get into smaller towns (this is much cheaper than making the prints). Alas--so far not so successful. The projection is not yet really up to par. But there is hope. I love watching movies in home, but there is something about the theater experience I wouldn't want to give up altogether. But I love that Elijah is often looking to smaller filmmakers and it is brilliant that he helped get the funding for Hooligans. It is a tremendous, hellish process to make a movie from scratch--but it is done, and there are some really good results. That people like Elijah put support behind them is so vital--it keeps the industry alive for many very creative people who can't get studio support.
Yah Elijah.

Okay--posting while drinking wine and vegging out. I dont' know if I made any sense.

Pelagia:
One of the things that has always struck me, when I’ve listened to the commentaries by PJ/Fran/Philippa, is that they nearly always had well considered reasons for the changes that they made in Tolkien’s story. Many of the reasons had to do with pacing, and many just with the requirements of a medium very different from the printed page. But few of the changes seem to have been made lightly or frivolously (Legolas’s acrobatic scenes probably being key exceptions to this generalization). Even the much-maligned alteration of Faramir’s character and actions in TTT had a rationale.

Me too, Pelagia. I still have trouble reconciling many of their choices, but I feel much better knowing that they really considered their changes and could back them up with logic having to do with Tolkien and with dramatic effect. I'm grateful for that.

Dogs??? It seems I've missed a huge dog discussion. This seems like a game we play in our household where we try to decide which of our friends would be each character in Gilligans Island. Or in Friends. Yeah, we are an exciting bunch!! ;) :k
I love it. :D

Just popping in with Harry Knowles’ take on The One Lad (he’s already a fan, of course):

Next – let’s talk Elijah “mean nasty f****r” Wood. I know that doesn’t make a lick of sense right now, but Elijah is like a shrunk down deadly Stan Laurel playing a Tony Jaa inspired version of Hannibal Lecter. He’s a pulp version of the killer rabbit from MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL. Something so cute and cuddily and then… so kick ass that my single thought was, “RUNAWAY!!!” He’s cooler than Gollum in this flick.

Love it! :D :D :D :D :D

Great quote, Random! :D Knowing Harry is a huge fan of Lij, if Lij can do for Harry he oughta be able to do for us too!

honey! not sleeping again

ETA: just peaked at Harry's SC review, and saw this:

I’ve been quasi terrified about this movie for 2 years now. I wasn’t happy with ONCE UPON A TIME IN MEXICO. The film had moments that were fantastic, but just wasn’t the film I dreamt of with Robert. In fact, I felt it so missed the mark I was hoping for, that I honestly felt there was a good chance he wasn’t ready for this film.

Not sure what Harry didn't like about OUTIM, but yeah, I've been worried about Sin City because of that film. Now I'm trepidatious for other reasons! :D

I was just saying to Alyon last week, that I had my trepidations about Sin City, having seen Once Upon A Time in Mexico. Since it's all typed up already, and I'm lazy and tired, I'll just quote myself:

I rememberd today going to see "Once Upon A Time in Mexico," Also directed by Robert Rodriguez. Randy wanted to take me because he thought I'd like to see Johnny Depp in it. I was basically miserable the whole time. Stuff exploding every three minutes, the f-word in every other sentence. And the final 15 minutes, or was it hour, with blinded Johnny gore running down his cheeks, stumblling through the streets of Mexico vanquishing his enemies one by one. That's all I can tell you about the movie, because that is literally all I can remember. Well, and JD wore some very funny t-shirts. If there was a story line I was too traumitized to pick up on it. Probably wasn't helped by the fact that I really don't like Antonio Banderas much; one of those mass-female-hysteria things that I just don't understand! (But then I'm such a sensible creature, and have never had my head turned by someone as insignificant as a pretty actor! *snort* And lightening oughta strike me where I sit!) I was very glad we saw it on buck-fifty Tuesday at the cheap theater, and not at full price!

ETA: I forgot til I submitted my post and read Honey's again that I was going to comment on Robert Rodriguez. OUaTiM [you know, they really should have given Hooligans a longer name--it's the only title we can't abbreviate :p ] was, from everything I read, one of RR's "flying by the seat of the pants" movies, where he didn't even know what the plot of the story was when he started shooting it. Seems he's somewhat known for doing that. SC, OTOH, has been made meticulously from the get-go, following Frank Miller's work almost frame-by-frame, with Miller at Rodriguez's elbow the entire time. I'm guessing that made quite a difference. (Not that the "seat of your pants" method can't give a movie some vitality, but it can lack in other areas.)

...My own perspective is that we have, I think, 9 art house movie theaters within 2 miles of my house, and many more throughout the city...
 Not envious or anything, oh, no, not a bit

But I love that Elijah is often looking to smaller filmmakers and it is brilliant that he helped get the funding for Hooligans. It is a tremendous, hellish process to make a movie from scratch--but it is done, and there are some really good results. That people like Elijah put support behind them is so vital--it keeps the industry alive for many very creative people who can't get studio support.
Yah Elijah.
When I'm lamenting the current state of the publishing industry, with big publishing companies being eaten up by even bigger publishing companies that are run by conglomerates with people at the helm who don't understand anything but the bottom line (which I do whenever I get an audience  ), I usually end the diatribe with, "Thank God for small presses!" I don't know as much about the movie industry as I do publishing, which I have to deal with regularly, but I'd imagine independent filmmakers fill some of the same role there, for similar reasons. But with more difficult hurdles to jump--it's much cheaper to produce a book and much easier to distribute it than it is a film. The internet is a great thing for small presses, if they know how to use it. Hopefully technology can provide a similar benefit for independent movies before too long.

(And, a bit OT, the problem in publishing isn't limited to fiction, poetry, and other creative writing, but is also very active in medical/scientific research publishing, which has all kinds of implications--my latest diatribe was at work. There are grassroots efforts to use the internet to get around the conglomerates there, but it's difficult because the online publishers have to convince people that they're keeping the standards of peer review, etc., and not just publishing anything people send in. The world of "publish or perish" hasn't embraced the new methods yet. Even my boss, who has well over 600 publications to his name and wouldn't have to publish a paper again if he didn't want to, won't submit anything to an online publisher. Maybe when current postdocs get to the point that they're deciding who's going to "perish," they'll look at things differently--we can hope. Or maybe the conglomerates will crash under their own weight... well, we can dream, can't we?)

But back to movies--Yes, I applaud what Elijah's been doing with smaller movies and hope he keeps doing it, even if I can't always see the immediate results in the theater :( . He evidently realizes he has enough "pull" now to get some things accomplished which, to be honest, he probably didn't have before LotR. It was an eye-opener to find out that he didn't just "win the part" in Hooligans but was active in getting the movie made at all. I'll be very surprised if he doesn't end up producing films himself before too long. He seems to be more certain now about starting his own record label, which would take much the same skill and effort. He may direct at some point, but I'd lay bets that he'll produce (to make it concrete: that he'll produce a film before he's 30).

Basically, he already did -- I'd be really surprised not to see a producer's credit next to his name for Hooligans. But I do recall him saying at some point in the recent past that he did want to produce films and since he's not quite ready to give up a place in front of the camera yet (and he's said as much), this is a natural transition. It's no big surprise to me that he's savvy enough to do this -- although as a fellow Aquarian, the ability with money is something of a mystery. ;)

Q. What college would you like to go to?
A. Well, I'm interested in directing and a lot of things behind the camera. I think it would be great to learn everything there is to know about the movie business and go to UCLA for film school...or USC because George Lucas is my role-model as a director. Umm..ok, that wasn't of much help in....anything but..O well..

And Random – Thanks for the great quote from AICN. Quite a feat, to mingle Stan Laurel, Hannibal Lecter, and Monty Python in the same concept. Of course, Elijah as killer rabbit has created another whole set of images in my mind. It may even drive out the dogs. . . .

whiteling: According to IMDB, Tony Jaa is a Thai martial-arts expert who has done stunt work (Mortal Kombat: Annihilation) and acted in a Thai movie. I guess Harry is referring to that kick/leap that we see Kevin doing in the online excerpt.

From http://www.movie-reviews.colossus.net/movies/s/sin_city.html

The movie attracted an impressive array of talent, including some of the biggest up-and-coming names in Hollywood, as well as a few established stars, and one has-been on the comeback trail. A lesser movie with this kind of high-octane cast could have become bogged down by the "spot the star" syndrome, but Sin City engrosses to the point where we're no longer watching actors with names, but the characters they are playing. For example, when we see Elijah Wood, we're not thinking of Frodo Baggins. And Bruce Willis isn't John McClane. More than anything else, that's a testimony to how well Rodriguez does his job.

Achila, thanks for the notice about Dougie Brimson's radio interview!

Don't forget that Lij is on Ellen tomorrow! According to the website he'll be "giving us a look at his early acting days." Hmmm, to provide a contrast to Kevin for those not familiar with all his roles prior to Frodo, I'm guessing? Should be fun to see him again, anyway.

ETA: Wood, where are ya? We miss your cheerful presence! :k

ETA again: I just ended up back at the Ellen website, as I was shutting down the computer for the night. And I just have to say that I'm so glad Elijah is who he is. Yesterday Ms. Degeneres had Ashton Kutcher on to talk about Demi, and the possible baby, and his relationship with Bruce Willis (says so on the website; couldn't have paid me to watch it. ) And I'm just so so glad the Elijah keeps his private life out of the public eye, and is considered "interesting enough" on his merits as an ACTOR, not as gossip-fodder. Hope I'm making sense here. I just so admire Elijah for his good sense, and his reserve in exposing his private life, and not allowing his fame be about celebrity!

Interesting notion, Honey! I'm glad to see it. Elijah really has had an interesting career. I'm glad he's no longer one of those invisible actors that you know you've seen before, but just can't remember precisely where. (That as my first impression of "Frodo". From AICN:

Sources within HBO say the sitcom “Entourage,” a Marky Mark Wahlberg-inspired tale of a rising movie star and his pals, is seeking an actor to play a powerful renegade online movie-gossip maven.

Apparently it’s a significant role in the episode and producers are going after a name comedian to play it.

But Knowles says “Entourage” producers needn’t fear litigation.
"P*ssies!” roared Knowles in an exclusive interview with Ain't It Cool: Coaxial News. “They totally have my permission to roast me. Go on, make my mama cry! As for actors to play me? My pick is Eric Stoltz in a fat suit. Guillermo Del Toro. or lastly Phillip Seymour Hoffman. Or maybe Elijah Wood. Maybe Jack Black could do it, or that guy from RUN RONNIE RUN that was a little drunk his own self."

Um -- yeah -- Elijah.

Harry Knowles has put up his own review of Hooligans over at AICN (Ain't It Cool News.com) and it is fabulous. I'm so glad he's a fan of Elijah's! It's an absolutely glowing review, and contains this little gem:

It’s easy to look at Elijah as a kid – this film makes you see him as a man.

...and this theory:

I think that’s the real key to this movie’s success. In the old days of Hollywood – you had scrappy juvenile actors that made tough. Folks like Mickey Rooney, Dick Powell and to a degree James Cagney. Guys that were small looking wide-eyed types – that forever transformed their image by getting dirty. Elijah’s doing that in this film and SIN CITY. In Rodriguez’s flick – it’s stylized badass. Here. Here he shows it with grit and determination. It isn’t that he’s the cock of the walk – it’s that he’s tough enough to not give an inch (centimeter).

:) :) :)

I just happened to be over at the IMDB page for Hooligans (coff) and noticed they’ve got some external reviews up (as well as the internal reviews)

From here:

http://www.efilmcritic.com/review.php?movie=11709&reviewer=128

If you're looking for an actor to capture youthful idealism mixed with tentative insecurity, then Elijah Wood should be atop your list. Sure, it might take a few minutes before you can stop seeing Mr. Wood as "good ol' Frodo," but this actor's got real chops, and he absolutely deserves to be seen as more than just Hobbit-like. He's the heart, the soul, and the anchor of Hooligans and Wood just nails his role in scene after scene.

‘The heart and soul of the film’ – sound familiar?!

Gotta say, I’m loving clicking on Hooligans and Sin City reviews and practically KNOWING that there will be a nice little complimentary mention of EW, rather than just ‘Elijah Wood returns as the saucer-eyed Frodo’ which cropped up all too often in LOTR reviews.

From Achila:

I don't know if this has been posted yet... hopefully it hasn't and I'm not treading on old ground.

http://comingsoon.net/news/reviewsnews.php?id=8778

It's a review for Hooligans. This is what the reviewer had to say about Elijah:

"Elijah Wood cast against type creates a character that is smart but timid at the beginning of the film but soon that finds an inner anger and a strength to fight with a passionate ferocity for his new found friends. This film being one of the first films created since his long stint as Frodo Baggins will redefine Woods as not only a talented actor but also a rising action star."

I know what you mean. Let’s face it: the gentleman is just first-class all around. And at the age of only 24! Many guys are barely fit for civil society at that age!

Mariole – Thanks for the evidence of how appropriate Elijah would be to play Harry Knowles! Of course, if Harry didn’t have the beard, we would be better able to judge his sterno-whatever-that-multisyllabic-thing-is, and how it compares with Elijah’s. (Were you also the one who provided the first EJW/vole comparative photos, BTW?)

Achila – Thanks for the EII photos! August seems SOOOOOO far away. . . .

BTW, those of you who got to see “Ellen” will know that Elijah’s appearance was very brief. No discussion of his early career; no game with the audience. They did show some knockout stills of Kevin’s fight scene with Marv, but no film clip -- still being very cagey about Kevin, obviously.

He's still biting his nails, BTW -- says it's maybe worse than ever.

I'm sorry to hear about that, as I've seen only the most positive coverage about him and his work recently. Does anybody know what he's referring to? He seems quite interesting from what I've read, and his note to you, Hobmom, is lovely.

I did see one person somewhere, who was writing about that lovely article you linked to a few weeks ago. This lovely person (whom I promptly forgot) was suggesting that JSF should take the title of "most annoying person in New York."* She/he/it seemed to think that JSF's e-mails to his interviewer were incredibly self-centered; maybe they were a bit so. But what author isn't? And doesn't he manage to speak for the loneliness in all of us when he writes? Some of the bits in EII have brought me to tears for their aching loneliness. His writing, even his eccentric e-mails in that article you linked to, fascinates me. Well, not only me; obviously a lot of people. And the snarky individual who wanted to nominate him MAAPiNY*? No ego involved there, I'm sure! [/off topic rant]

I'm trying to kill time, waiting for the minutes until 4:00pm pacific time tick past. I'm gonna watch Ellen, and Elijah, on my big screen; he's worth it. My big screen, down there at the end of my little box-car proportioned room. Yup.

I see no reason for Elijah to stop at "rising action star." I'm certain he can 'act' fat too!! ;)

Because of the language in some of these reviews, I can't link to them directly here.

But you can go to Oscarwatch.com to see them. Select Forums, then Main Forum -- the thread is called, "Everyone is drunk on Sin City".

Here's an excerpt from one of them:

"Problem is, to get to the Cardinal, he needs to battle Kevin (Elijah Wood). Kevin's a creepy little bastard with the nasty habit of hunting down hookers and eating their flesh, along with their souls. He also moves like a ghost and is next to impossible to lay a finger on. In the comic, Kevin was a slightly older gentleman with some nasty lookin' whiskers. In the movie, he's a clean-shaven Elijah Wood with some funky glasses that, in combination with Wood's seemingly lifeless eyes, will creep you out for weeks to come. Wood couldn't have asked for a better role than the one he received in Sin City. Any chance of his being typecast as Frodo has been thankfully (for the longevity of his acting career) demolished."

Mariole--
You beat me to it :D ! But you're a much better observer than I am--I didn't notice the shirts :o . Good thing Harry is wearing that vest, or we'd never be able to tell them apart!

Harry and Elijah have been friends for some years, and, yeah, I think Harry has some affection for Elijah. And from Harry's report of his visit to the LotR set, Elijah recognized him from his voice, so they know/knew each other that well, at least.

Of course, as far as I'm concerned, Harry has fulfilled what will probably be his most important purpose on earth--telling Elijah [words to the effect that] "They're making movies of The Lord of the Rings and you have to play Frodo."

BTW, one of Harry's animations of himself today is as the "Yellow Fat Bastard" :D . (At least it's not that one of him getting ground up in the blender  .)

Achila, thanks for those EiI pics. (Shades of the "one expression," but hopefully we'll see a variety as we go along ;) .) Not my picture of Alex, but that's okay; wonder what he's saying in that second one. Love the little band meeting the train. :)

Whiteling's "What will I see?" (http://www.frodolivesin.us/contributions/id2.htm) is now posted at frodolivesin.us, for those who want to see a larger version than what was in the thread.

With Sin City coming so soon, I've also put up a separate page (http://www.frodolivesin.us/new/sin_city.htm) for it, so it can be updated in just a few minutes, rather than the hour or so it would usually take to upload the "EJW Movies" section of the site. No news that hasn't been in the thread (where do you think I get my news? :p ). There are links for related books, including the "making of the movie" book which is still a pre-order; they're really keeping the lid on that one--I'm wondering if maybe it won't come out the same day as the BestBuy DVDs).

Still working on screencaps from The Faculty... little by little.

Amazon has the "Making Of" book listed as being released April 29. So they're giving the film a full head of steam before they bring out the big guns, so to speak.

ETA: Gee, this' coming in so fast and furious, it's hard to keep up. This' an article about the Sin City DVD that RR is planning. Note the reference to "doing three movies in one." Hmmmm...

ETA-- (Hah! Made it this time ;) ) Achila, that interview with RR -- OME, what was he on?
"...and I want another ten minute cooking school to be 'Sin City breakfast tacos'; which I'll make a home-made flour tortilla, and it's the best meal you can probably ever learn."
Gee, so many things to look forward to!

I did find his discussion of the violence interesting, though. He went on for a long time about that--so either he really thinks it's important or... . But I wonder if it's going to be stylized enough that I might actually be able to watch it without having nightmares afterward :( .

And I completely agree with him about Bruce Willis. I'd read about the first 10 pages of Hartigan's story when I heard he'd been cast, and thought he was a perfect choice.

And I'll bet Elijah really enjoyed Frank Miller's concentration on the characters:
"...He [Miller] let me handle all the visual stuff. He was really there working with the actors, knowing the characters so well. I didn't know everything about the characters cause it's not all in the book, a lot of it's in his head, and they loved to be able to know where the character was going in future volumes, or what he was thinking when he put it together, and how it should be performed."

_______________________

Gee, I was going to do an ETA after I read all the posts between the time I started writing mine--way too many hours ago--and posted it, but I'm too late. (One of those a sentence here-and-there days at work.)

How nice of you to write JSF, Hobmom--and how great that he wrote you back (not the mark of a big ego, at least in my book). I'll put up a notice on my "What's New" page, too, when/if  I get home tonight. Anyone who says such nice things about Elijah deserves our support :) . I remember when the movie was first being announced, JSF seemed quite proud to say, "Yes, Elijah Wood will be playing me."

And while on EiI, glad you like the new avatar, Whiteling and Honey (my first non-Frodo avatar, which is a little scary for some reason  ). Thanks to Bunnie for the pic--Have I said that I love that poster? :p

(((ceefour))) -- Hope you're feeling better soon.

Just dropped in to say that when I went looking for a link to Jonathan Safran Foer's new book, I discovered there are more EiI goodies available, including a couple of less expensive audio options for anyone who's been held off by the high price. A movie tie-in edition of the book is due to be released July 1 and can be pre-ordered now. So, I added another page to the "What's New" section for those, plus a couple of interesting books that JSF has edited. If you're thinking of buying any of his work, and want to help me get a very petite amount of currency :p from Amazon, here's the page:
http://www.frodolivesin.us/new/jonathan_safran_foer.htm

If anyone can figure out what the picture on the front of the French version is supposed to be... OTOH, I'm not sure I want to know. There's also a German edition, but it's listed as currently unavailable.

My little retelling of Hobmom's message is on the regular "What's New" page. The customer reviews at Amazon give the book four-and-a-half stars. They're all unanimous at five stars except for one reviewer who gave it one star and does say some nasty things about JSF, basically accusing him of plagierism in regard to EiI. I don't know if it fits with the personal attacks he's talking about, but it might.

Tgshaw,

If anyone can figure out what the picture on the front of the French version is supposed to be... OTOH, I'm not sure I want to know.

Well, I thought that it looked rather like a demented Christmas tree...but now I'm not so sure !!

As for the discourse from Robert Rodriguez about the violence in Sin City, he was saying almost exactly what I was saying over at the TORC thread...namely that this film is SO heavily stylized, that I reckon that the really gory stuff will be very sanitised...because of its very dark B & W style of filming, what we shall see is a lot more violent stuff than we are aware of...
When you read a comic, you aren't cringing at the sheer violence of it, although it may well be far more violent than anything we usually see on screen...and that is solely because of the very stylised presentation...if that makes any sense at all ! This film will be simply a moving version of the comic...

Here's a snippet about an up and coming documentary from MTV, which will feature the voice of Elijah, amongst other actors of his generation, reading from various diaries of young people, who survived the Holocaust...

Should be good, but I'll bet it will only get an American screening...so much of the really good stuff from MTV is only for the US, it seems...

This thread is really exciting reading lately! Thanks to all for reviews, pictures etc.

I found a British site that has picures from EII - the two already posted (by Achilla) and another one that really reminds me of a Frodo shot but I cant think which one. :o

EII pics (http://movies.monstersandcritics.com/archive/moviearchive.php/Everything_is_Illuminated/2897/images)

This is the film I'm really looking forward to this year, although us Brits have to wait until Sept :( , as I dont know that I can take the sleaziness and violence of Sin City, stylized though it may be. But there again I might go to see Hooligans if its distributed :z: , and thats pretty violent too. I think its because I like films that offer some kind of hope or resolution at the end.

I eagerly await the US Faculty members reviews on SC to help me make up my mind. (SC is due out here in June.)

Wood, best wishes for a speedy healing of your husband's arm.

tgshaw, the scene at the Prancing Pony is exactly what crossed my mind when I saw that shot from EII. Am embarrassed to admit I'm not exactly sure where the other one is from...Amon Hen, I think? :o My sentence will be to view all 3 LOTR films again ASAP. ;) :D

Like the rest of the Faculty, I'm basking in the glow of the praise being heaped upon Elijah while simultaneously feeling a bit smug. Somehow I doubt he's going to go the Action Star route, despite the reviews suggesting him as a Rising Action Star. The next film he should do, IMHO, is a period piece with flowing lacy shirtsleeves and knee breeches. Any such role will do. :z: :p

Rikka! Good to see you. *waves* I find this statement from the review encouraging:
“Hooligans” never glorifies the violence and in fact by the end of the film, you see how mindless violence really is.

So, Whiteling, you are the Vole Bringer! *kisses your feet* I loved that little fellow. The lemurs are grand, true, but as they have successfully financed their own film, I don't feel that they need my vigorous support quite so much as the common Elijah-shaped vole.

the killer rabbit link has also provided an ad leading to the website of Mr. John Cleese (www.thejohncleese.com) and the intro shows - a Bud lemur!!
Once again I am astounded by how interconnected the universe is. Also, frighteningly, that there might be a physical resemblance that can in fact be traced from vole to lemur to Elijah *shudders* FWIW, I also have all of Monty Python on tape--I love the killer rabbit! Oh, to do a parody of Elijah as Kevin as the killer rabbit... :p

Well, I thought that it looked rather like a demented Christmas tree...but now I'm not so sure !!
This is shaping up to be a Rorschach test...

When you read a comic, you aren't cringing at the sheer violence of it, although it may well be far more violent than anything we usually see on screen
Alas, Lady Wendy, some of us are truly wimpy. I made the huge mistake of picking up a Batman comic in the store not too many years ago. Remember happy Batman and Robin, from the TV show? This comic had my mouth gaping open. I couldn't believe how brutal it was, and couldn't put it down fast enough. I don't know why; some violence I can handle (I can watch LOTR, obviously), and some I can't. I hope the stylized version won't come across as too brutal. I'm still pretty chicken, though. It's like some of the male reviewers talking about Hooligans, where the violence is a good thing--like, yeah, bring it on! Something to promote the film. I already know violence is mindless. I think I'll just have a whimper now.

My sentence will be to view all 3 LOTR films again ASAP.
Just hurt your neck, Goldie. You'll be there, watching ALL the commentaries on ALL the EEs, and every special feature, and playing every slideshow from every design gallery. ... I really am ready to be well now. *sigh*

The next film he should do, IMHO, is a period piece with flowing lacy shirtsleeves and knee breeches. Any such role will do.
*melts* That would be lovely. But EII is a period piece, also, isn't it? I don't think he'll be trapped in the action hero slot! *grins, feeling smug and happy along with you* :k

Hi, Rikka, and thanks for the interview :) . I know I sound like a broken record, but IMHO this bit just emphasizes again that this movie is targeted at Americans, most of whom really are totally ignorant of this:
This is where the film really pulled me in. I had no idea about rival firms, their ways, fights and their intense loyalty to one another. Lexi Alexander does an amazing job showing what this world is all about.

Am embarrassed to admit I'm not exactly sure where the other one is from...Amon Hen, I think?
Yes, the line being spoken is, "It has taken Boromir." [What? Get a life? :haha: ]

This is shaping up to be a Rorschach test...
Maybe I've been spending too much time at AICN, because what it looks like to me is, shall we say, much less appetizing than other people's ideas. :( I think there's a smilie for it at CoE  .

I went over to Harry Dahling's site and about choked on my Slim-Fast over the responses to his review, let alone his review. I'm sitting here grinning from ear to ear. Dang. Controversy over a movie is never a bad thing. It ensures attention and box office receipts and that once again The One Lad's name will be known in every soccer- - er - sorry - football-crazed country in the world. It's *got* to be distributed here in the US! They can't *NOT* distribute one of the most popular movies at that festival!

I also read the production notes from Sin City. I think Elijah's got some real winners on his hands. I suspect that the days of direct-to-video may be over, unless he deliberately goes after the little independent movies from time to time. The great thing is that I feel like he's taken hold of his career with both hands in a very adult manner.

I also think that EII is going to be a major hit and I think it's going to be a really, really good movie.

:::: sniffle :::: The One Lad is all grown up.

Oh, I wouldn't worry too much about Elijah getting some more work soon...I think that the three films he has coming out this year will keep him in the Public Eye, and at the forefront of attention in Hollywood...

'Tis one of the things about acting....being like freelance work, the jobs come and go, and more often than not, the newest job will lead to more work, and then the next job after that will lead to other stuff, and so it goes on....
Besides, isn't he setting up his record label at the moment...what with that, and his new house in Little Venice, he may well be taking a little break from filming just for the moment, while he gets those things sorted out !!

Achila

I do get the feeling that Lij had a lot of eggs in the "Ian Curtis" basket, and it might be a bit for him to regroup. But I also think he may concentrate on the record label this year, based on what he's doing and what I'm feeling from him. Take this with a grain of salt, perhaps, but a friend of mine said a friend of hers saw him in a building in NY, and that he told him he'd bought an apartment there. The music "thing" had been part of the reason for the move to NY originally last year, so setting up an east coast base sounds like he's making plans to work on the label. Again -- it's only heresay, and I'll confirm if I hear anything for sure, but very interesting.

Achila, thanks for the link to that Sin City document. I found it interesting what Elijah said about Kevin. Again, he seems to have found a way to be empathetic with the character he plays, saying

... in his own way, he's looking for a kind of love...

An odd thing to say. But TG, was it you who said Kevin is based on Jeffrey Dahmer? I remember reading at one point that Dahmer was doing just that; looking for a kind of love, and attempting to keep his victims with him to fill some awful loneliness.

As for new roles, I think Eljiah is rather picky, and finding the right script mayn't be all that easy. I hope he has scripts dropping through the slot everyday. And the acclaim he's getting right now, for Hooligans and SC can't hurt a thing. I want to him to enjoy this recording label endeavor, and I'm sure he'll do well with it, and reap more critical acclaim for his effort there at some point, since he's such talented man, and so discerning. But I hope he keeps acting. So far it looks like next year we may be Lij-deprived until the realease of Happy Feet, and I'm rather bummed at the prospect.

I agree :).

But TG, was it you who said Kevin is based on Jeffrey Dahmer? I remember reading at one point that Dahmer was doing just that; looking for a kind of love, and attempting to keep his victims with him to fill some awful loneliness.

What a horrendous concept of love
Elijah on Kevin: "There’s something incredibly calm about Kevin. In fact, Frank was always telling me to be more calm. He is definitely a psychotic murderer but he finds a weird peace in hunting down and eating people, which makes him pretty unique in the world of crazed killers. In his own way, he’s looking for a kind of love.”
Elijah's description here reminded me of James Ellroy's spine-chilling study of the serial killer Martin Plunkett in the novel "Silent Terror" (Marty Plunkett is the pure essence of a serial killer, so to speak. Ellroy formed his protagonist after several authentic notorious killers). Marty Plunkett kills people not only for the feeling of power over life and death, but for the wonderful "silence and peace" which he is finding afterwards. Ugh.

Happy New Year Faculty!
From Return of the King, Appendix D, The Calendars:The Shire Reckoning and dates are the only ones of importance for the narrative of the War of the Ring. All the days, months, and dates are in the Red Book translated into Shire terms, or equated with them in notes. The months and days, therefore, throughout The Lord of the Rings refer to the Shire Calendar. The only points in which the differences between this and our calendar are important to the story at the crucial period, the end of 3018 and the beginning of 3019 (S.R. 1418, 1419), are these: October 1418 has only 30 days, January 1 is the second day of 1419, and February has 30 days; so that March 25, the date of the downfall of the Barad-dur, would correspond to our March 27, if our years began at the same seasonal point. The date was, however, March 25 in both Kings’ and Stewards’ Reckoning.

The New Reckoning was begun in the restored Kingdom in T.A. 3019. It represented a return to Kings’ Reckoning adapted to fit a spring-beginning as in the Eldarin loa.

In the New Reckoning the year began on March 25 old style, in commemoration of the fall of Sauron and the deeds of the Ring-bearers. The months retained their former names, beginning now with Viresse (April), but referred to periods beginning generally five days earlier than previously. All the months had 30 days. There were 3 Enderi or Middle-days (of which the second was called Loende), between Yavannie (September) and Narquelie (October), that corresponded with September 23, 24, 25 old style. But in honour of Frodo, Yavannie 30, which corresponded with former September 22, his birthday, was made a festival, and the leap-year was provided for by doubling this feast, called Cormare or Ringday.

The Fourth Age was held to have begun with the departure of Master Elrond, which took place in September 3021; but for purposes of record in the Kingdom, Fourth Age I was the year that began according to the New Reckoning in March 25, 3021, old style.

*And on a sad note...*

There is no record of the Shire-folk commemorating either March 25 or September 22; but in the Westfarthing, especially in the country round Hobbiton Hill, there grew up a custom of making a holiday and dancing in the Party Field, when weather permitted, on April 6. Some said that it was old Sam Gardner’s birthday, some that it was the day on which the Golden Tree first flowered in 1420, and some that it was the Elves’ New Year. In the Buckland the Horn of the Mark was blown at sundown every November 2 (Anniversary of its first blowing in the Shire in 3019) and bonfires and feastings followed. After all that, I conclude that we can celebrate March 25th, March 27th, April 6th, September 22nd, and November 2nd. While we’re at, let’s double each feast in honour of J.R.R. Tolkien.

"The other surprise character in the movie is Kevin played by Elijah Wood who gave the impression that "Frodo" had been taking some classes with Jet Li and Donnie Yen. Done with saving Middle Earth, Elijah is now a cross between a super ninja and Jeffrey Dahmer chomping the forgotten women of "Old Town" like derelicts on an Egg McMuffin."

Hee hee.

Just got back from seeing "The Sea Inside" -- another brilliant film. This fits right in with the discussion we were having about the usual crap cinema available at the local multiplex. Here's yet another sensational film from 2004 that got little attention come Oscar time because a) it was not made in the US, b) it was subtitled and c) it has a controversial subject. So I suppose ESOTSM was in great company last year.

Lady Wendy

Honey
But TG, was it you who said Kevin is based on Jeffrey Dahmer? I remember reading at one point that Dahmer was doing just that; looking for a kind of love, and attempting to keep his victims with him to fill some awful loneliness.

We, here in the UK, also have our very own version of Kevin, locked up at Her Majesty's Displeasure, who decided that the only way for him to get to know people and to have any kind of relationship with them, was to kill them and then leave them in the armchair where they were strangled, for a few weeks, to give the illusion that they were companions !! He, also, liked the feeling of total power of Life and Death over his victims...
He was Dennis Neilson, who tried to dispose of the bodies by cutting them up and flushing the body parts down the toilet....( now if only he had thought of eating them, he may have got away with it !! ) He had maybe twelve or so victims before the neighbours noticed a peculiar smell coming from the street drain outside his house !! Completely mad, of course...
Brian Masters wrote a marvellously insightful book about Mr Neilson, called "Killing For Company", in which he came to a similar conclusion about him seeking a version of love that he couldn't get from living people...Kevin may be totally bizarre, but, by no means unique it seems, sadly...
I am so looking forward to being creeped out by cuddly Elijah Wood...if he can elicit feelings of horror and revulsion in me, then he is a far more masterful actor than I give him credit for...

Wood
How fantastic !!!...Do enjoy your visit to Germany, and I hope you get to see "Hooligans" while you are there...( wasn't this the reason for your visit, initially ? Hmmm, I may be wrong about that !!)
Anyway, there is nothing quite like actually meeting up with people you have been chatting like old friends with online..and, trust me, they NEVER look like how you imagined them :D...

Great new Avatar, Lady Wendy!

And *Happy New Year*, Faculty!

ETA: Just found an interesting interview (http://threemonkeysonline.com/threemon_article.php?id=133) with Jonathan Safran Foer in which he talks about EiI. If this has been posted already, I do apologize. Maybe JSF has been attacked personally because of his latest political activities?

Good luck with your meet-up and movie plans, Wood, Whiteling, and Serena. I have twice flown off to meet people I'd never met in person--and I loved them every time! And they're no longer strangers. It's one of the best outcomes of the LOTR to me, is meeting these wonderful people from all over the world that I wouldn't normally have met. :k Have a great time!

Now for Something more Positive. :D

I watched "Superman 2" last night and freaked out when it showed the scenes of Clark Kent and Lois Lane as "Mr. and Mrs. Kent", how much Clark (Superman  :p :D ) looked like JONATHAN only taller.

If you don't believe me, check it out, and let's review how Superman in disguise seems to fit Elijah's many characters. I was so tickled by how much it seemed a perfect match. I'm sure he to would find it funny that some ladies out there think this is a funny way to view him.

I knew there was a reason I think of Frodo as Middle Earth Superman, but how funny is this? :D

ETA: Shadowcat, that was my first thought when I saw that pic of Elijah as Jonathan on the ground looking up--"He looks just like Clark Kent!" :D

----------------

As usual when I'm supposed to be going to my mom's, I'm already hours late. April site updates took much longer than I expected--despite that "What's New" page that lets me add things between-times, I still haven't found a way to avoid the once-a-month "backbone" updating so that everything (hopefully) matches up again. Only major addition today is three scenes of Casey Connor: Action Hero (http://www.frodolivesin.us/ejw/id64.htm), all from before the "main event" of the movie--still a lot of work before I can post the actual face-down with the alien, although I have all the caps "shot". The One Lad (who actually was a lad then ;) ) never fails to amaze. There are some other, more minor, site changes listed on the What's New (http://www.frodolivesin.us/new) page.

The elwoodian terminology question brought up by ceefour and Lady Wendy (what do you call a pairing of pics from Frodo and one of EW's post-LotR movies) is involved with the site updates, as I have one of those posted for April--you can probably guess which one ;) . The way I remember things (which is not necessarily what really happened :o ) is that the Fro-echo label was used for within-LotR echoes, like the handgrasp in the boat and the one at the Sammath Naur, or the similarities between Frodo's expressions in the roast chicken scene and the "Just a feeling" scene. So I'd thought the post-LotR pairing was a "Frodotype," with the idea of Frodo being a prototype for something later. If I'm wrong on that, let me know, and I'll change the screencap label and the glossary entry. I have no idea if I'm remembering correctly. :o

Interesting interview with JSF, Whiteling. I think I'll have to say more about it in the book thread after I got back in a couple of days, as my recent rereading has gotten me thinking about a lot of the same questions. The book that's mentioned at the end of the interview (from last September) is the one he's asking people to buy now. There's unhappiness from some people that he chose to write a novel about 9/11, although other people are calling it courageous. Regarding his political views, the Future Dictionary of America that he edited looks interesting along those lines.

Best wishes to wood, whiteling, and serena on your get-together. :k

Scrolling back to see if I missed any comments--No, Honey, I don't think it was me who brought up the connection between the two cannibals, but it seems to fit. The story of the one in England reminds me of Psycho, with mommie dearest in her rocking chair. And perhaps not as well known but even more creepy (IMHO), the deranged emperor on Babylon 5, who'd line up on his desk the heads of those he'd had decapitated so he could have pleasant conversations with them. -- I get the shivers just thinking about it years later... :(

But as far as what Elijah said about Kevin, I'm not surprised. When he did the same thing for Patrick (explaining why the character was the way he was), it reminded me of the fiction-writing dictum that even the most psychotic villain, in order to seem real, has to be coming from a way of thinking that to him (or her) makes complete sense. Otherwise, whether in a book or a movie, it has a tendency to become a "wink" to the audience--"Oh, you know I'm not really like this." If I were going to make one overall statement about Elijah's acting (yeah, right, after how many threads, posts, and sentences? :p ), it would be that his ability to really understand the characters he plays is "how he does it"--ability along with effort, dedication, and passion. Let me just say that I'm glad he didn't have to play Kevin for 18 months  !

sekrit message to C4--Oh, I knew you'd remember :k .

After seeing our cuddley Elijah make me, of all people, want to smack him in ESOTSM for being manipulative Patrick and also in that Homicide episode as evil McPhee, then I am fully prepared for him to creep me out as Kevin. He is that good!

And did anyone notice the little slightly evil grin he gave Ellen when she was talking to him about playing Kevin the killer.

Here it is...

Maybe JSF has been attacked personally because of his latest political activities?

Evidently Jonathan has a few detractors that dislike him for the reasons some people dislike Elijah. That he is quite sensitive, shows his emotions freely and is so talented.

I found this link

Thanks for that link, Hobmom, and to all who have been offering answers to the question what the "personal attacks" on Foer were, and what motivated them. Some interesting background you all have brought forth. :k

In that blog entry Hobmom linked, I assume MFAs are masters of fine arts, and MSM is mainstream media?? Not sure about any of the other abbreviations, but work deadlines compel me to merely skim everything these days anyway. :(

But thanks again, Hobmom and other Faculty. I am probably going to be an EII "newbie" when the film comes out but I would like to get to the novel eventually. I found the NYTimes article about Foer (which I linked a few weeks ago) intriguing.

the Fro-echo label was used for within-LotR echoes, like the handgrasp in the boat and the one at the Sammath Naur,

Yes, yes...you are absolutely right !! I thought that we had used it before somewhere, but for the life of me couldn't remember where

I think 'Frodotype' is truly an admirable alternative...Good thinking !!

When he did the same thing for Patrick (explaining why the character was the way he was), it reminded me of the fiction-writing dictum that even the most psychotic villain, in order to seem real, has to be coming from a way of thinking that to him (or her) makes complete sense.

Yes, and I think that this is not only the best way to get across to the audience the genuine believability of the character, but also it HAS to be a way for the actor to really get inside the character's skin, and thus make his own acting process easier in itself...The actor has to get into the head of the character in such a way that everything that the character does must seem to be perfectly reasonable and normal, no matter how warped, depraved, or psychotic...
I wonder what that does to the actor himself ? Or is that part of the secret of Good Acting skills...that you can drop in or out of character at will, and at no point are you ever getting yourself and your character mixed up ?

Hobmom's evil grin from the Ellen Show may be more than it seems !!!

We watched "Eternal Sunshine" a few days ago, at long last !! Adam bought it online, ( even though he can't stand Jim Carrey usually ) because of the Kaufman element...we loved "Being John Malkovitch" ...
It's true...Patrick is a sad, and pathetic little creep, who is just a bundle of insecurities and desires...Poor Patrick - he must have been such an interesting character to play, even though the part was small...and to get to work with the incomparable Kaufman's script, well, no wonder Elijah was enthusiastic about getting this part...
I do wish his part had been developed a little more...not letting us see Patrick's face during the memory sequences was, imo, masterful as a quirky little device, and reminded me of a dream that you can't quite grasp the memory of on waking up...even though you had been completely engrossed in it a few minutes before ...the only trouble with that, for us EJW fans, is that it does cut down his screentime considerably...

You ladies are too funny! *hugs all the dear Facultites* :k

Tg, you have me snorking. But not about "Casey Connor: Action Hero!" That is entirely true. The Faculty is Casey's story as much as Alien is Sigourney Weaver's. FWIW, I think Casey does a real fall from the roof. He fell several feet onto a mat while fighting as Frodo with Andy Serkis. I can see him flopping onto a mattress in a fall by himself. (I love Dad with the porno magazine in his hand-- I'd missed that! It certainly looks like the cast had fun!) *sighs over the neck shots, made just for me!* :k

I love "Frodotype." Very appropriate. I also loved this on your What's New page:
Two new pages in "The Mirror of Galadriel" (Frodo falls and gets back up again--what could be more exciting?)
Seriously, my mind's a blank. :p

Thanks for the piccies and info, Hobmom! Like Flourish, I will avoid reading the book until after the movie. I think I'll enjoy both more that way.

Patrick is a sad, and pathetic little creep, who is just a bundle of insecurities and desires
I'm solidly with Lady Wendy on this one. Patrick creeped me out! Can anyone say, "Budding stalker?" Now we can see that Kevin is just another logical step in this direction, eh? *shudders*

Whiteling, I am dying of Easter bunny cuteness. *dies*

He calls PJ's hobbits "jocose gnomes". ARGH!
ARGH, indeed. *wakes from the dead to become a vengeful zombie*

In lighter news, CEEFOUR leads a chant in a football stadium, a la PETER JACKSON:

CEEFOUR: Give me a "Ster-"

CROWD: O!

CEEFOUR: Give me a "mast-"

CEEFOUR: What's that spell?

CROWD: STERNOCLEIDOMASTOID!

CROWD: STERNOCLEIDOMASTOID!

CEEFOUR: What's that spell?

CROWD: STERNOCLEIDOMASTOID! YYYaaaaaayyyyyyy!!!! *crowd noises dissolve into cheering, whistles, and foot stomping*

Thanks for this Whiteling. I like to have German copies of films I know. Pity I can only record one channel at a time. - I'd have like to have Huck Finn too. I only saw a few scenes, as we have guests staying, but from the voice they used to dub Frodo, I can see where thoughts of 'jocose gnomes' might come from. And Boromir's voice too. It was so wrong. Surely they must have actors in Germany with low rough voices like Sean Bean's.

I also got to watch Nicholas Nickleby this weekend, and, after the article about Elijah being in from the beginning on Hooligans, I am now totally convinced that Lexi Alexander was referring to Charlie Hunman when she made comments about not being able to pick her own actors. I found it a real stretch of the imagination to see this charming, dashing, handsome, young hero as the cockney leader of a gang of thugs. In the documentaries accompanying the film, the director said that when casting the part they were looking for someone who looked like a lamb, and that with Charlie this is exactly what they got. I am really impressed with his acting. He made me dislike him so much in Cold Mountain, and then had me falling for him in this film. There have been comments about how his on screen relationship with Elijah is the highlight of Hooligans. Perhaps Lexi as a first time director lacked the experience to see the promise of this connection and just couldn't see the 'lamb' being hard enough for what she had in mind for the character.

I read Bumblebee Flies Anyway again last week, and despite knowing the ending, I still found found I had tears streaming silently down my face when I came to close the book. I think this is one where seeing the film first helped, as I always have Elijah's portrayal of Barney in mind when I read the book, and I'm hoping seeing EiI on the screen will help open up the character of Jonathan to me. I don't remember really making any connection with him at all as I read the book.

Perhaps Lexi as a first time director lacked the experience to see the promise of this connection and just couldn't see the 'lamb' being hard enough for what she had in mind for the character.A lot of the reviews we've seen have remarked about how wonderful Charlie is in this role. While I have no doubt that he's a good actor and did a good job (yep, I liked him in NN, too -- he can act the pants off those like Heath Ledger and yes, our Orlando too, who I consider his contemporaries), it is a flashier role than Elijah's and would naturally garner more attention. We had heard that there was a high degree of unrest on the set and that Charlie and Lexi did not get along, so you may be right there. Particularly since we now know how instrumental Elijah was in getting the film made altogether, I don't imagine Lexi's comments *were* directed at him, as we thought.

Whiteling, that was absolutely amazing! I thought for sure that was really an "old master" that merely looked like Elijah, as we've seen so many that do. They don't have the placement of the face quite right, or something, which is what lead me to believe it was "authentic" -- it's unbelievable what people can do with Photoshop. I'm sure others could do better, as my time is limited too, so I can't direct you to threads, but basically, Lexi made it clear in an interview that she had had a 'hollywood' actor foisted on her against her will. It was assumed she meant Elijah, but that seems to have been disproved, as another article said she had discussed the film with him before the finance was even sorted out. Regarding the 'lamb', Elijah's role in the film calls for him to be an unlikely hooligan at the start, so it doesn't really matter too much about him looking anything but thug-like. Hunman is supposed to be the leader of the 'firm' and as Nicholas Nickleby he is about as far removed from that as you can imagine (think Hugh Grant, but blond). He did, however, look the part on the stills I saw from the shoot.

I'm not following any of the Lexi/Charlie/Elijah drama -- my online time is too limited. Can someone summarize for me? Is Lexi mad at Elijah? Is Charlie a lamb and Elijah not a lamb? Help! If it's just speculation, don't waste your time. I can survive not following the blow-by-blow. Cheers!

Mariole, In one interview a couple months ago, Lexi made some vagueish references about not being allowed, as a first time director to choose her actors. She complained about having to work with an actor because the producers wanted him because he was a "big box-office draw." Naturally, since there is only one actor that draws the lot of us to the box office with BIG anticipation, and since we were greedy for news of him, we tried to read her mind. Happily we failed in this endeavor.

Rumors were reiterated that Mr. C. Hunnam had been a bit of a brat on set, and that Ms. L. Alexander had been known to raise her voice to him, and perhaps even trash his trailer in a fit of picque. Based on earlier rumors about Mr. E. Wood's peace-keeping efforts on set, It was supposed that this was where his efforts in keeping the whole production on track had lain. Or stood. (Insert preposition of choice.)

It was also remarked, that since young Mr. Wood is such a gentleman (sailor-like language aside) we will probably never hear about any incidents on-set from him. :k Bless his heart!

More recently there has been an article in which it was revealed that Elijah liked the script for Hooligans so much, that he was heavily involved in finding the funding to make the film! Further, Lexi (who is a woman of discriminating taste, I must say) said that she really liked Elijah as a person, and that she liked just spending time with him.

Thusly, Elijah's lamb-like persona is intact. And Charlie's more stereotypical actorly tempertament is perhaps hinted at.

Whew! Jump in, anyone, if I've got it wrong!

---

Scrolling back to see if I missed any comments--No, Honey, I don't think it was me who brought up the connection between the two cannibals, but it seems to fit. The story of the one in England reminds me of Psycho, with mommie dearest in her rocking chair. And perhaps not as well known but even more creepy (IMHO), the deranged emperor on Babylon 5, who'd line up on his desk the heads of those he'd had decapitated so he could have pleasant conversations with them. -- I get the shivers just thinking about it years later...

TG, Thank you for reminding me of Emperor Cartagia in Babylon 5. I'd first seen that actor as a man of the cloth in a soap opera. I'd liked him well enough as that character, that when I saw him as Emperor Cartagia on B5 I was sceptical... for all of about 5 minutes! He just nailed that part, and by the time his own head was raised I was more then happy to wave him 'bye-bye' to him along with Vir!

:o :o :o From linking whiteling's site about muscles, I realized I posted inaccurate information a couple of weeks ago. I posted about a condition in which the patient has no sternocleidomastoid muscles, but that's wrong, the patient has no clavicles. It is called cleidocranial dysplasia. :o :o :o

P.S. Whoever was nice and gave me reputation points, you'll have to take them back!

There has been so much good Elijah material (verbal and pictorial) here recently that I’ve just been quietly taking it all in. Thanks to everybody who has been keeping us posted and sated (insofar as we can EVER be sated). And whiteling, what lovely bunnies! In honor of the season, I considered posting a picture from “Lord of the Peeps” (a website to which Achila introduced me), showing marshmallow-bunny Frodo bearing (around his ear) a Ring that’s nearly as big as he is; but I chickened out. (For those unfamiliar with Peeps, they are disgusting marshmallow confections, coated in sugar and tinted various pastel colors, and shaped like chicks or bunnies, that show up in US stores around Easter.)

I’ve been meaning to ask a few questions that came to mind a while ago, when I was watching FOTR with the production/post-production team commentary. Mark Ordesky and/or Barry Osbourne were talking about how PJ had wanted British actors for all four hobbits, but about how once everybody saw Elijah’s audition video (are WE ever going to get to see it??), there was no question that he was Frodo. I had heard all this before, but I wondered: 1) Were any other actors ever publicly named as having been considered for the role, and 2) Does anyone know whether PJ originally wanted such a young actor for Frodo (who, after all, is the oldest of the four in the book)?

Also, I wonder whether the selection of Elijah (who, according to Mark/Barry, was the first person cast) helped pave the way for the acceptance of Sean Astin as Sam, despite his being American. After all, the only other US members of the cast (IIRC) were Viggo (who famously wasn’t the first choice for Aragorn) and Liv Tyler (about whose casting I know nothing).

Apparently, they also make Halloween and Christmas Peeps too (and btw, Peeps come from the Just Born Company, of Bethlehem, PA -- a little plug for Pelagia's and my home state).

Of course, Dom auditioned for Frodo, initially, and they thought he had "something" but I don't think they were ever seriously entertaining him for the role.

And now for something completely different -- I'm, even as we speak, watching the Director's Commentary on Deep Impact (Best Buy has a free "Sin City" disk you can get if you buy a CD or DVD -- if you go looking for this, don't expect to see Lij, except in the trailers -- and I got the Collector's Edition of DI, which I didn't have before). Well, the mystery of Elijah's teeth is definitively solved. As we said, they put braces on him to make him look younger and to indicate time passing (Mimi Leder's almost exact words). So the hateful prosthetic was the "after effect" of the braces.

Peeps are originally diss'd by Pelagia
(For those unfamiliar with Peeps, they are disgusting marshmallow confections, coated in sugar and tinted various pastel colors, and shaped like chicks or bunnies, that show up in US stores around Easter.)

Then, Achila said:

A little story behind peeps: They are made by the Just Born Co., as Achila said. Justine Born was a woman who, in middle age, decided to be a nurse. When my sister was at Sacred Heart Hospital School of Nursing between 1968 and 1972, Justine drove her Jaguar over from Bethlehem every day for school and work, and graduated with her class (can't remember if she was in Sara's class). She got to work as a nurse for a few years, but sadly, died a few years later, I think of a brain tumor, though I'm not sure. I should check with my sister.

And Bethlehem (pronounced "Bethlum") is just over the hill from Allentown, where I was hatched - er - um - grew up.

:::: scrambling around for on topic reference :::: Didn't Fropeep make a cute Frodo? And weren't the eyes just *perfect*?

C4 quietly admits (she's heard about grumpy's family) that while she doesn't care for Peeps much for eating, she does love Lord of the Peeps. But hopes the fact that her great-grandparents were from Wilkes Barre will protect her.

C-patiently awaiting news from the West Coast about Sin City's premiere-4

ETA-Congratulations to Achila on 600 posts.

Nice cheer, Ceefour. You get to keep your reputation points!

Really? I always have to copy and paste. *exudes jealousy*

Thank you, Honeyelf and Skater girl, for the back story on Lexi. I guess all this happened when I really couldn't be on the computer hardly at all.

Congratulations, Achila! I just passed that milestone myself. *preens*

And I adore Lord of the Peeps. That was truly a work of art. :)

Thanks, Mari and ceefour. And btw, the first pics of the Sin City premiere are beginning to appear on www.wireimage.com -- Lij was wearing the "half and half" look -- dress shirt, tie, jacket and jeans. Very cute.

Pelagia,
as far as I know, "young Frodo" was planned by PJ from the very beginning. Even in the official Frodo cast description was mentioned that actor must be from 20 to 24 years old. (Sorry, I don't have a proper quote from it on my work PC - only at home).

I knew Mata Hari, oops, Achila would come through with pictures.

Took one look at them and thought, "Oh, that's the shirt he wore to the Oscars." Followed closely by, "I can't believe I know this."

Achila and Rikka – Thanks for answering my questions about the casting process for Frodo. If indeed nobody else was seriously considered for the role, that just underlines (once again) The Lad's unique and impressive talent.

As for our detailed familiarity with his wardrobe (like ceefour, I noticed the shirt) -- IMHO, that's just another reflection of Faculty members' dedication to all aspects of Elijah-related research. Perhaps if we understood his attachment to those boots, or his predilection for untucked shirttails, we could gain more insight into the sources of his acting ability, and how he approaches his roles. So far, I haven't gained any such insights from close study of pictures such as the ones Achila posted. But I am not discouraged; I will persevere, and force myself to keep examining them in the interests of expanding the frontiers of human knowledge.

Aah, Pelagia, that's the right attitude. In order to expand the frontiers of human knowledge it is indeed indispensable to concentrate one's thought and wish on the object of research in question. The tiniest detail matters. I wouldn't be surprised if those boots someday will be one of the keys to many unsolved queries of the advanced Elwoodology.

Excellent line of inquiry, dear colleagues. Whilst you study shirttails and tan lines, I'm exploring length of stubble creep down neck, both its expansion over the area and the length of the bristles. I'm sure this might end up being important. *begins writing grant*

Need any help with that grant writing, Mariole? :D My unofficial preliminary conclusions are that while his beard shows much more promise than it did a couple of years ago, the unfortunate sparseness (sparsity??) of the hair on his upper lip indicates a continued inability to produce anything approximating an actual mustache. My recommendation would have to be that he return to shaving, I'm afraid. Soon. ;)
