I downloaded the clip but can't get it to play on my iMac, at least not in Quicktime. It's a Windows Media file. Is that something that can be played on a Mac?
They didn't show him presenting. From what I hear, Bravo did not show Elijah and Liev presenting the award for best documentary. In order to get that, you had to watch (or tape) the live broadcast of the awards on the Independent Film Channel. :(

I've been away for a little over a week, and, my, what a lot has been written here; much of it, fascinating.
Two questions:
1. honeyelf; your Grey Book is private, then? I had received what must be an "illegal link" through a friend of a friend of a friend, telling me how great it was. But now, reading through this week's posts, I see that it must be read with permission. I had hoped to link it to TORc, actually, the other place I lurk and post. Please PM me, if you are not too busy, to say why it should not be. Thanks -- and I am not being snotty or anything,
--Mechtild
Edited to add: Just to clarify, no, no link has appeared anywhere in another thread or an LJ (that I know of). I merely had heard that there was a publically-available link, at last, posted right here in The Faculty. That news, I see, was correct (per post #684 on p. 28) but that it is correct no longer. The publically available link has since been removed. One can't be blamed for wanting to take a peek. This book (and its being made viewable) has long been talked about and anticipated right here in this thread; especially after you all ooohed and aaaahed over it, in pages 28 - 29. :D
Anyway, I am glad it came out so very well as something to give to E.W. That's the important thing. :)
2. Shireling, although it has not [yet] been commented on, I thought your post #702, was a bold and true one. Thank you! I also have wondered, especially as applied to E.W., how much it is the case that an artist's instincts are good, or whether it's a matter of his simply choosing the path of least resistance (as a human being with a particular psychological make-up) -- and things simply turning out well.
Has E.W. made the choices he has made -- now that he has had far more say in his professional decision -- in a conscious, intentional way, or in a manner that merely "goes along," from moment to moment. I just blabbed (indirectly) about this at the TORc thread, but it has worried me -- and continues to worry me -- that is, how much E.W. does (or does not) invest --or is willing to invest -- in his professional choices, as an artist.
3. Flourish, you wrote,
Quote:
that was dangerously close to swooning, wasn't it!
Yes but I think we can overlook it from one who has seen The Eyes.
That cracked me up. You are one tongue-in-cheek, funny woman.
Alyon, your post #744 from 2-25-05 about Howard Shore's music and about the individual destiny of artist's in their roles as artists, moved me very much. Thank you.

One of those rare "Elido" moments!
ETA: Regarding the grey book web site: A couple of you who wrote things for it have expressed concern that it is not as private as you had hoped, and I understand this entirely. I spoke with my husband, and apparently we have three options:
1. we can take down the site, and no one will be able to look at it again.
2. We can password protect the site, but if we do that I will only give out the password to people who have something in the book, with the reasonable - I hope - request that you not give it out to anyone else!
3. We can delete only the letters that the authors' thereof wish to keep private.
So, if you wrote something for the book, and have a thought on the matter, please let me know by PM. And, if you could, please let me know by the end of the day.
Thank you,
love and hugs,
honey!

But now, reading through this week's posts, I see that it must be read with permission. I was one of the ones who urged Honey to remove the links from posts. I know it doesn't ensure privacy, but it would reduce some casual browsing.
It's a hard choice, Honey. For myself, I don't care; I just wish I COULD GET THAT DING-BLASTED SONG OUT OF MY HEAD! ::: recovering ::: But there's some pretty personal stuff in there.

honeyelf, what's an "Elido moment" as opposed to a "Frolijah" moment? I am guessing it means those pics in which Elijah is costumed as Frodo, but is not in character....? :p
zkgrumpy, I've got the story straight, now, about the Grey Book, but thanks for the clarification. :) It is true that threads are more public than one is aware of. That is one of the reasons why the option of private messages is so great here. At TORc, for instance, while there used to be a little icon you could click in a person's signature box which would reveal their email address (if they chose to provide it), now, there is nothing. If you want to find out something from another person via email, you are forced to post your email address or ask them to post theirs, right in the thread.
Flourish, that was quite the snippet you linked from TORn. I wish the film was more like what they had told the stadium managers, too. I could not open the NY Times article; I needed to register but it appears there already is a person at our email address registered there. My husband must have registered there already; I will need to ask what he put for a user name and password.
Blossom, that was a lovely gif. Thanks for linking it -- and thanks for the welcome back. :k
BunnieBugs, Happy Belated Birthday! I loved the photos you posted of EW with Liv Screiber. I know EW is a little guy, but Liv Screiber must be huge!
Achila, was it you or someone else that said that the Ian Curtis was officially a "not"? I read the thread last night but I was so tired, I can't remember if I got that right. Shucks. I was hoping he'd get that. :(

I just read that snippet about Hooligans, and although the evidence seems to be pointing more and more to the film being little more than gratuitous violence, I simply can not believe that the makers would have bothered getting Elijah if that is what they intended. There are plenty of other well know actors more recognised for that type of role who could have been the 'name' used to get attention for the film, and to be honest, most of the people they would be targetting with a purley violence based film would simply laugh at the thought of Elijah playing a tough guy, especially after Orlando Bloom's outing as a supposed boxer. I can't really imagine Elijah taking the role either, if there wasn't a bit more to it than getting beaten up regularly.
I don't usually like violent films, Road House excepted, but I am starting to really look forward to this film, just to see how they have gone about using Elijah's acting strengths.

Flourish - that Hooligans snippet is very disconcerting! Let's hope it doesn't bode ill for the film itself. I was hoping there would at least be a moral to the tale. :z:

most of the people they would be targetting with a purley violence based film would simply laugh at the thought of Elijah playing a tough guy, Didn't Dougie Brimson address this on his web site?
I can't really imagine Elijah taking the role either, if there wasn't a bit more to it than getting beaten up regularly. I think Dougie addressed this when all those articles about "Football Factory" came out, and I remember Elijah also had some comments. Dougie said that the people who are pre-judging the film have no idea of the journey that Elijah's character is making. I really, really doubt that the movie is just a string of beatings. I think we're going to see some classic EJW jawline-acting and inner angst. I suspect that the character will be gradually and irresistably drawn into the violence, just like Frodo was gradually and irresistably taken by the Ring, and Elijah has a very good track record with that concept. I think that the article was a re-hashing of all of the rumor and generalized speculation of "The movie is has X in it, therefore it glorifies X." I suspect it glorifies violence about as much as LotR glorifies war.
I don't usually like violent films, Road House excepted, but I am starting to really look forward to this film, just to see how they have gone about using Elijah's acting strengths. ...and to see if it really is as shallow as articles like that say.
As for using actual hooligans, this was also addressed by someone - Dougie? and it wasn't as it's depicted.
To paraphrase Gollum, "We shall see, oh, yes, we shall see".
I can't remember. Was Hooligans shown at Sundance? Were there any reviews?
~grumpy (which reminds me, Andy Serkis was on MI-5 - I suspect it was a repeat. He was fantastic.)(But I kept waiting for him to put extra "-es" on plurals and say "precious...")

Didn't Dougie Brimson address this on his web site?
I just revisited his site at www.brimson.net to remind myself of what he did say, and I came across this little remark from Dougie talking about 2004.
The sight of my son being repeatedly kicked to death on the set of Hooligans will live long in the memory as will watching my daughter being chatted up by Elijah Wood!
Could she be one of the females he was pictured with that some though was Lexi?

I was able to watch today in detail the Independent Spirit Awards (I taped them) as they ran on IFC - live - no commercial breaks - no editing.
The first we see of the one lad is as a presenter for Best Documentary. IIRC the off stage announcer says "here is the star of Everything Is Illuminated, Elijah Wood and the film's director, Liev Schreiber". Ah Ha - no second fiddle here. He looks GOOD too!
We do see a close up of him, at a table in the audience, as Jodie Foster is presenting. Again looking very good. We see him again as the credits roll. The camera pans the audience and pauses. There is the one lad -- yes- signing autographs.
I don't know about Bravo's coverage but the IFC seemed to treat him as well as any actor present. And he seems to have fans everywhere. He certainly seemed comfortable among his peers.
So how does one get an invitation to present at the Independent Spirit Awards? Doesn't this seem like a coup - to present two years running? Or maybe I am hoping this is a sign of good things to come for EII.

Just dashing in to say farewell for a while - I am about to embark on my very own Journey to Middle Earth. On Tuesday we travel to London and we fly out to NZ (Auckland) on Wednesday. It still seems quite unreal. We return on 18th March - and it will probably take me another couple of weeks to catch up on all the posts here:)
Btw Honey ~ I am quite happy for my contribution to the book to stay online.
Lovely to see Elijah at the ISA. Of course, you do realise he is now going to fly out to NZ to visit the King Kong set, don't you? Ok, perhaps not - but I can dream, can't I? :D

Over at Harry's website was this bit on Kevin reported by Quint. Neca is a toy company.
Neca has a lot of upcoming movie lines, actually. The first and foremost in overall coolness factor, to me, is the SIN CITY line. In the first series, to be released late March, is Mickey Rourke as Marv...
The next SIN CITY series will feature Kevin (played by Elijah Wood... I can't wait to see his turn here), Jaime King as Goldie, Brittany Murphy as Shellie and Devon Aoki as Miho is to be released later this summer.
Can't imagine any child (young or old) playing with or admiring a likeness of a mute, cannibalistic serial killer but to each his own...I'll just keep playing with my Frodo and Sam dolls dressed as Orcs. :D

Thank you all for the lovely birthday wishes and pics. Pretty black and white graphic, Wood! Thank you. And my own animated gif from Blossom! *sniffle* It's gorgeous! Thanks so much.
I also wanted to say that I'd heard that bit about the filming company 'tricking' the ball club some time ago. It was mentioned in reference to the fact that the title to the film seemed to keep changing back and forth, and someone (I can't remember where I read it or who they were talking to) admitted that the title was meant to be Hooligans all along, but in order to be able to film in the stadium, they had to pretend that it was being called The Yank. :( Too bad they had to mess with someone's trust like that.
And I have no doubt that there will be much more to the film than just mindless violence. No matter how badly Elijah wants to escape Frodo (and let's be honest, there were more than a few people out there who asked him point blank about whether he might get stuck with "Mark Hamill Syndrome"), I don't think he'd sign on to any film that didn't speak to him and have some sort of substance to it. It's just not his style.
Can't imagine any child (young or old) playing with or admiring a likeness of a mute, cannibalistic serial killer but to each his own...I'll just keep playing with my Frodo and Sam dolls dressed as Orcs. :D
I expect that they will be collected by the same sort of people who collect the graphic novels or who enjoy watching the film. And possibly people like me who must own at least one version of any action figure modeled on Elijah. :D  As for actually 'playing' with them? Er... I expect my husband could come up with some pretty creative things to do with them... :o
Again, thanks for all the "happy birthdays"! :k

Stumbling in with a somewhat incoherent Happy birthday to BunnieBugs!
Can't hope to compete with all the new pictures, so how about some old ones? All from the very first FotR "special features". The first two are kind of blurry, but IMHO that just adds to the melancholy nature. The last one is from the alternate view, from the side, of the WiKi's attack on Weathertop.

I was cleaning out old files today, trying to free up a bit of memory on the computer, but decided these could stay :p .
Have a great trip, Shireling!!
It's nice to see a proposed date for Happy Feet, even if it might get changed. Thanks, Achila. Thanks to Saile for the IFC report--and welcome, which I don't think I've said yet :) .
I was doing a bit of site-critiquing on some action figure sites recently, and--believe me--there's a lot worse than Kevin out there! Just about any horror story figure or monster you can think of--even Lovecraft characters! The fanboys'll love 'em! (Including everyone at AICN, I'm sure ;) .)
To whoever asked--sorry :o I'm kind of running on empty here--Hooligans wasn't shown at Sundance but is scheduled to be shown in March at the Southwest Film Festival (not sure if that name's exactly right) in Austin. I believe the exact showtimes were posted awhile back in the thread. I'm sure the AICN guys will give us a rundown--and I'm very much looking forward to seeing what they have to say.
Honey--I don't have any privacy issues with my contribution to the book, since it was taken from the public thread almost word-for-word. This may sound silly, but my one problem with having the book available for everyone in the world to read and copy is that it would make it seem like less of a gift for Elijah.
For a report on The Symphony--I'm not sure what to say. It could have been better and it could have been worse. My friend enjoyed it but wasn't swept away, and I felt somewhat the same way. Don't get me wrong--it's wonderful music. But I don't think I was expecting it to be as much of a local production as it was. The Omaha Symphony is really very good for a city of this size, but it ain't the London Philharmonic. There's an excellent local children's chorus that sang (probably the most "professional" of the participants). The other two choral groups--one mixed and one male--were from UNL (the school that has a hard time deciding if it's a university with a football team or a football team with a university). They usually did fine, but there were times when they were very obviously not quite in synch with the orchestra. The children's chorus is sponsored by a really fantastic local adult choral group, and my biggest disappointment was that I'd thought that group was going sing rather than the UNL chorus groups.
I don't want to make it sound as if it was a bad production--it was wonderful, and deserved the standing ovation it got at the end. It's just what happens when a musical work gets into "wide release." I'm hoping there will be a recording of it released--preferably with the London Philharmonic :p .
Alan Lee and John Howe deserve more notice than they've been getting for the visual accompaniment (IMHO).

Was Mr. Wood at the Oscars tonight? From what was shown on ABC, there were about 5 actors there, and the rest might have been a rabble of mindless orcs.
Clint got all the awards for his latest movie, with no annoying Kiwi flick in the way. One of the - um special effects? winners said he was glad there was no fourth LotR movie. :)
Ah, for the day when The One Lad will get the formal recognition he deserves.

This seems to be the thing that is best for all of us here. But I do ask that you please do not give out the password once I've given it to you!
Anyone who has a letter they would like removed from the book, for whatever reason, just PM me.
Flourish, thank you for the link to the Jonhathan Safran Foer interview. I look forward to having the time to read it. That article about Hooligans is rather alarming! But I just can't see Elijah taking a role that was all gratuitous violence; that doesn't seem his style at all.
Bunnie, I am so enjoying those pics of Elijah and Liev S. Looks like those two got along!
ETA: I forgot to say "bon voyage" to Shireling! Have fun, and please tell us all about it.
TG, when I saw the symphony in Seattle there were a few spots where the chorus didn't start together, or sounded muddy. It was still way cool though! :)
Nice of those IFC people to have the blue and green color scheme; it sets of the One Lad's eyes so nicely!

EDIT: Honey, have just seen your huge and wonderful pic. Thank you too!
Many thanks too, Bunnie, for the Hooligans links.
But on that subject, I'm gutted to report that the movie of that name has suddenly disappeared from the "upcoming films" section of my local movie website, caramba.lu. A search for the name still finds it, but it's gone from the "bientôt" ("soon") section (where until last Friday it was listed as starting on March 3rd!!).
wood, whiteling, I'm so sorry! :(
Can only hope that the recent buzz about the content - accurate or not - hasn't put them off showing it here at all. I've emailed them to ask and will report if I hear anything. But don't hold your breath ....
Had been reflecting recently on the potentially off-putting effect of both the title and the trailer. WE may be sure it will have some serious and worthwhile content if Elijah's in it, but is the rest of the world? And even some of us have expressed reluctance to see it, which sounds a bit like the last nail in its coffin. I'm one of those who was glad when the title was changed from the anodyne and meaningless "The Yank" - but on reflection I do wish they'd changed it to something less in-your-face. I could imagine some distributors being afraid to show it in case it attracts the very people it - ahem - isn't actually glorifying.
Nearly forgot: the long list of upcoming movies on the site now includes .... Football Factory :(
Flourish, thanks for the tip! I've finally, finally cleared out my mailbox  , having discovered at long last that I could easily download the whole lot as a text file :o
PS Guess who said this?
It didn't feel very independent to me. I guess when J.Lo and Ben Affleck are the center of attention at a festival, every filmmaker with integrity feels out of place.

Must get back to work, but not before noting the absurdity of the "google ads" today: at one point when I logged in, it offered "Used Elijah Woods" for sale. WHAT!!?? NO NEW ONES?!!!

Regarding the Hooligans article--it may be that the deception was not just in the name, but in portraying the violence in a condemning way--and those West Ham (?) fans just don't want it pointed out because it isn't flattering. Maybe, anyway.

From an article posted at TORN:
For many film makers, the success of Bend It Like Beckham - which grossed $32m in the US - was a turning point for the sport in cinema. "It empowered us. It told us we didn't need to shy away from football," says Lexi Alexander, whose film about hooliganism, The Yank, is due for release in August. "Football is a great environment for a movie because there is such passion for it and so much adrenalin."
In The Yank - which will be called Hooligans in the US - Elijah Wood plays the role of a Harvard dropout who comes to London and gets involved with a West Ham gang. It was filmed at Upton Park, where Wood endeared himself to members of the local "firms". The author and hooly expert Cass Pennant worked as a consultant: "I had a few lads who would take the piss out of the hobgoblin. But he won them over. He was very serious. His fans will be horrified to see their idol covered in blood."
Only five months to go for US Faculty members! August will be a very GOOOOD month for Elijah fans! :D :) :D   :D
Welcome, Saille! I forgot to say so too.
And yes, Mechtild, an "Elido" moment as exactly as you surmised. Credit TGShaw for coining that one.
Is that all I forgot? I can hardly keep my head straight lately.

Maybe. But I suspect it's the club's management (rather than the fans) that doesn't want West Ham Football Club to be associated with hooliganism. Hooliganism has (of course) been a huge problem for UK football for a long time and the football league has been doing everything in its power to combat it. And yet the clubs need the fandom because that's where their income comes from, so they can't lean too heavily on the spectators. It's a double-edged sword. But I can well understand that the last thing an FC thinks it needs is a movie called Hooligans set at its own ground! I hope WH ultimately comes to see it as an anti-violence film which portrays West Ham in a positive light. (I also hope the film turns out to be that! :z: ) The violence we saw in the trailer didn't exactly look as if it was being recommended as life-enhancing, any more than the (far worse) violence in films like Platoon or indeed Lord of the Rings, as someone pointed out - was it zkgrumpy? That violence was intended to open people's eyes to the real meaning of war/conflict and put people off it - quite the reverse of glorifying it. It's those who uphold human virtues in those movies that we identify with. Maybe that's the case with this movie too.....
Talking of which, wood, whiteling, caramba has actually replied to my email!! Amazing (they have a reputation for ignoring them). Apparently Hooligans is still scheduled to start end of March/early April :) (but they still don't say where or how often or anything useful like that). So presumably its disappearance from the lists is a mistake. I now see that Billeh's (somewhat bizarre-looking) movie Seeds of Chucky, scheduled to start around the same time, has vanished from the lists too. Maybe someone deleted a whole page by mistake???
So - sorry about my paranoia! It think it was reading that West Ham article that did it ....
Oh - and ceefour, you do get the prize! It's an invitation to come to central Europe to see said person's first feature-length movie, should you feel the urge. Wish I could say it's the première, but that may be in London in August (if anywhere/anywhen).

That article linked at TORn highlights something I didn't know, and that's just how many soccer/football-related movies are in the works for the next year or so. The U.S. is the last untapped world market for this sport (Americans just don't get it, somehow, or its uninterrupted format makes for unprofitable television [no commercial breaks], or not enough of us grew up playing the game, or all the above). I would imagine most of those films will get U.S. release in an effort to create what marketers like to call "synergy," and that would benefit all of them at the box office. We shall see.
"Their idol covered in blood," huh? Well, that's no surprise now.

Yes, I'm quoting myself, because I'm wrong, very wrong. Big clue, they called it "football," not soccer! That's a british article, sot the US release date is still up in the air.
World cup soccer came to my little corner of the world a few years ago. We managed to get tickets for one game; US versus Brazil on the Fourth of July! It was fun, and I wasn't ready for it to end when it did. I liked that the game was fast and brief, though. "Our" team lost, but it was a blast anyway!

That's a british article, sot the US release date is still up in the air. I made that exact same mistake, Honey. I got all excited and posted a link to this article in my journal, not realizing that the release date in question was only on that side of the pond. :(
In non-related silliness, I was thinking about that Kevin action figure that is coming out (that I will undoubtedly have to buy  ), and it occured to me that one could have a very interesting collection of Elijah-character action figures to add to their Kevin and Frodo, if a toy company were to make them. We could have Hitman Mikey, with his sunglasses and gun, Jones, with his cowboy hat and six-shooter, Casey, with his Bic filled with alien-killing scat, Patrick with his pair of stolen... Oh, wait -- that might be going a bit too far. :D

I remember in one of Elijah's television interviews, he said that he requested "one of everything" of LoTR toys, because he wasn't likely to be an action figure again.
Me, I think I'll skip "Kevin," and save my coupon money for a nice, cuddly, harmless "Mumbles!" :D

Ceefour, perhaps it's a mistake. I am currently editing an astronomy book and it shows very clearly that the spring and fall equinoxes and summer and winter solstices, the days that mark the beginning of the seasons, are the same for both hemispheres. On the day of the spring equinox (which I believe is March 21), "the Sun shines equally in both hemispheres. Northern Hemisphere is entering spring; Southern Hemisphere is entering fall."
It would seem impossible by the laws of geometry, not to mention of the universe, for the beginning of spring here and of fall in Australia and New Zealand not to correspond.
I do like your plan to go to the movies, though.

Hi, everyone! Just popping in for the first time in probably 2 weeks to say hello! Happy birthday, Peaceweaver, belated! And hugs to everyone who has wished me well (*sob* I've only skimmed the last 2 pages).
It's very difficult to know I'm missing all this conversation, but most of my poor computer time is spent on work. Yuck. I hope I will improve enough soon that it is not so, but I'm extremely far behind at this point. My poor little body really does not like the computer chair, and complains if I sit more than 2 hours per day, spread out in 20-minute chunks. *sniff* This is what I like to do! But I'm extremely grateful that I do not appear to be disabled. I must be patient, so everything comes back. If I couldn't write, I don't know what I'd do. *fights off panic*
I see folks are discussing Hooligans. I doubt I will see it, unless the more hearty of the Faculty strongly recommends it. I just don't like intensely violent movies. I was not worried about the violent trailer because I interpreted it as "I am clearly not the target audience for this movie." I believe young men are the audience, and they want something loud, brutal, and bloody with lots of fast cuts and hard action. This is not exactly me. I want people who truly love each other to have their hearts win out over all adversities. This is not to imply that Hooligans doesn't have a heart, but that it is likely to take an approach that I personally could not stomach on the big screen. I don't want to see Sin City, either. Elijah as ghoul would not be my favorite character enactment for him. I'm sure he sees the role as fun, and as distancing himself from Frodo, but I happened to love Frodo, so I think we're moving away from movies that appeal to me, random female viewer. EEI looks much more promising.
Must run. I hope to pop in again before too long. The improvement is slow, but last week was the turning point. Yea! Cheers, all. :k

I live in Australia, and I'm certainly no expert, but we've always observed the change of seasons that way. (eg Autumn - 1st March, Winter - 1st June, Spring - 1st September and Summer - 1st December).
Perhaps it's because we just like to be different (or easier to remember!). We know the 21st March and 21st September are observed as the equinoxes (and see vision on TV of people celebrating at Stonehenge!).
Where I live, the obvious change of season to Autumn is usually noticed at Easter. The weather is cooler by then and we're more likely to get rain (what's that?) :)
Yes, I've got that calendar too! It's strange how the pages with Frodo on them seem to linger on the wrong date (especially if the picture on the following page has an Orc, or similar, on it)!

Thank you, Kumari, for the information about the start of the season in NZ and Australia.
I've been thinking again. (Faculty members look around at each other nervously.) BunnieBugs mentioned about action figures for all EW's roles, but decided against Patrick. Poor Patrick; all he wants is to be loved and useful. But,(Faculty members cringe.) what about a really useful Patrick? How about a clothes hook for the bathroom? You know, the kind for hanging bathrobes. It could be like those busts from WETA. It would have EW's face and torso and his outstreched arms could be the hooks for your towels or pajamas or....other articles of clothing. Perfect! (C4 notices Faculty members edging slowly towards the Lounge door.) Wait! Wait! Do any of you have Richard Taylor's phone number?

Mine is on the wall over the stairwell (Frodo Agonistes, right?). I think my husband has been very liberal, but I don't think I could put the poster by the bed. I am sure he has long suspected, however, that there's another, even more provocative poster of Frodo tacked up on the walls of my steamy imagination.
But, like yours, my spouse doesn't lodge any complaints. He, too, has reaped great rewards. I am sure he would not appreciate it if I called him Frodo, though.

If I'm going OT, excuse me. I've begun searching Indianapolis on the web. Spring and summer always go by too fast and then school starts so I'm planning a little early. Morning, Faculty. :k
Hey, I was busy :)
You can see the fruits of my labour below.

"The Mirror Shows Many Things"
Help! The flimsy lines of the crayon pencils are too subtle for our scanner. It's too bad that I didn't manage it to give you a proper impression of the latest Lothlórien Frodo. The original drawing is really better.
A big thank-you goes to Tg, since her wonderful series of "The Mirror of Galadriel" screencaps and her comments inspired me hugely.
This drawing is dedicated to Nivina. She used to post here at KD, over in the Harem (some time ago) and (more recent) in the NG-Mott. I had just started with the first few lines when I learned that she had been killed in an accident. I then went on drawing with an odd mixture of feelings - shock, confusion and sadness, but more and more with the belief that Nivina had reached the white shores and beyond them a far green country under a swift sunrise at last.
x-posted to NG-Mott
whiteling this is beyond beautiful. I wish that I had the ability to describe what I felt when I opened the thread and saw your drawing.

WOW!! Whiteling - that is so. so beautiful. I can't stop simply staring at it. If the original is even better than this scan, it must be truly a wonderful thing to behold.
For myself, I see perfection, but I wondered if, having drawn it, you are able to stand back and look at it with the same wonder and enjoyment as the rest of us, or are you hampered in this by your critical eye? I was always struck by Peter Jackson's comment that he wished he could see his films having been hypnotised into forgetting his involvement in the making of them.

Oh, la la! Whiteling, that is a gorgeously done drawing. The expression in the eyes leads me in, and then back out again, as if I could see out of Frodo's eyes. In that way, the picture has no limits, since I must ask myself, "What does he see...?" And, therefore, "What do I see...?"
And what a sensitive thing to have made in honour of Nivina, whom I did not know, but read about in the Harem thread. To do this picture from the perspective of passing out of this life into...? Perhaps that is what Frodo sees -- or fears to see -- ultimately.

How did you decide on that particular screencap? What did you see in it, and not all the others, that made you want to draw it?
As to more mundane matters, the answer to the start of spring question is that March 1 is the start of meteorlogical spring. According to Weatherbug (a downloadable weather site), "This is done to keep seasonal climate records accurate and easy to track. Astronomical starting and ending dates have little to do with the actual weather and they occur on different days in different years." So, meteorological summer is June 1, fall is September 1, and winter is December 1. Now, why do NZ and Australia follow meteorological and not astronomical start dates? I know you are all curious. ;) And what has this to do with EW? Absolutely nothing!

Great question for Whiteling, Skater Girl.

Beautifully put, Mech. Whiteling perfectly captures Frodo's mood of mingled awe and apprehension/uncertainty. You could lose yourself in those eyes! I love the subtle shading on the left side of his face, and the way the light illuminates his right cheek and the bridge of his nose, making the blue of his right eye slightly brighter than his left. Light and shade - it's superb. I just have to keep scrolling on back to take another look! :)

What I really admire about Whiteling's latest work is how well it captures what is "Elvish" about Frodo. It seems even clearer to me, here, than it ever did in the films. Truly there is something in that face that is not of this earth. Lovely! Thanks, Whiteling, for letting us see it.
Ceefour, thank you for adding to the answer about the seasons. Very sensible rationale, it sounds like. Be careful about Weatherbug, though. I'm told it is about 99% spyware.

ETA: What I really admire about Whiteling's latest work is how well it captures what is "Elvish" about Frodo. It seems even clearer to me, here, than it ever did in the films. Truly there is something in that face that is not of this earth. I'm still listening to my audio tape set of LotR. I'm in the Two Towers, in Ithilien, at the moment, and 2 days ago I listened to the part where Sam sees the light shining from Frodo. Then, later, Faramir comments about Frodo having an elvish air about him.
Re: Whiteling's latest offering:
Oh my <deity> . Unbelievable. Beautiful.
That's one of those expressions that it's hard for me to look at, because it's so personal - it's like looking into Frodo's soul.
I didn't know Nivina, but I can't imagine a more fitting tribute.
Re: Patrick clothes hook and Elijah in the bathroom/bedroom:
When I was about 3, I was lying on the couch one day watching Howdy Doody (ok, ok, I'm dating myself. So what else is new? I had the hots for Clarabell Clown). As was my habit, I was sucking my thumb. Suddenly, Buffalo Bob made a comment about "a little girl out there in TV-land who is sucking her thumb".
After that, you could not have convinced me that people on TV and in pictures could not see out of the tv or picture. I never walked in front of the TV without being fully clothed for years, and I still either don't keep magazines with pictures of people on them in my bedroom or bathroom, or anything with a picture on it, like Sean's book, tends to get turned face down by sheer force of habit.
So no, I won't be having any Frodo in my bedroom, thanks. :p
But I am trying to decide on a LotR poster that will not blow the cover off my Elijah/Frodo fascination.
See, I'm planning to turn my study into a "room of heroes". I have a brass rubbing of Robert the Bruce, a poster of Duncan MacLeod of the Clan MacLeod, Constable Benton Fraser, and Bob (The Bob) Chapin from Ring of Steel. I just got two 8x10's from a friend - one of SG-1, and one of His Honorary Geezerness, Richard Dean Anderson ::: bowing before honorary Jack O'Neill Geezer Rocker :::. I'd love to find a poster of Crazed Pellenor Fields Eomer, and one of Eowen, and one of Aragorn, and one of Frodo.... Hey, I'm running out of wall space!!! I could get the 4 hobbits standup...
Dang. I guess I need to get some of these pictures hung.

and since you mentioned it....a Patrick clothing hook....I'll take a few of those please....and as far as hanging your robe on it....maybe I'll use it for hanging Patrick's favorite female clothing article :o

grumpy, you need a poster of the entire cast to disguise your true intent. There are two I like, both gorgeous. One is horizontal and I think Frodo appears near the middle of the row of heads, and the other one is vertical and shows each "hero" (including heroines) in a frame with a little bit of text underneath. Frodo is the first one in the top row, if I remember right.
Gosh, I'm getting greedy just thinking about those..... ;) but I already have two LOTR posters. I really should hang them back up, now that the realtor has come and gone.

and I still either don't keep magazines with pictures of people on them in my bedroom or bathroom, or anything with a picture on it, like Sean's book, tends to get turned face down by sheer force of habit.
ZK, me too!

Blossom, why put the miles on your mouse? I printed it out, and it's going on my wall, next to my right shoulder, directly under "The Ring is Mine."
Honey - Well of course I saved it! :) Our colour cartridge just ran out, and they're fiendishly expensive for our printer. :( But I'm thinking Whiteling's drawing will make a very pretty desktop backgroud!
Hubby greatly admires your artistic talents, Whiteling. He thinks your latest offering is amazing - but says it's the subject that offends him! Not that he's jealous of my affection for Frodo/Elijah or anything, but he is forever turning the Frodo picture - which stays on view, whatever the month - on my LOTR calendar to the wall, and launches regular attacks on my two poor unsuspecting Frodo dolls! (Yes, I admit to having Frodo dolls! At my age!) :)

Oh dear, oh dear, THANK YOU all so much for your wonderful and kind comments! :k Coming home from work and reading so much posts full of praise... first it made my eyes watery and now I'm bursting with joy :)
Skater girl, that's a quite interesting question. *thinks*
To leave my critical eye aside when looking at my pictures was a long way to go for me. It was common practice in my former art classes only to focus on the negative things, the mistakes and weaknesses. Not very constructive, as you can imagine. :p Perhaps this was also a reason for my increasing lack of joy with drawing at some point. It needed a good deal of excercise just to draw and not to listen to the internalised critical voices. Just to let go. And it still depends on my condition.
There are days on which I look at pics of me and think, "Hey, that's really good", and sometimes it happens to be "Oh, no, look, there's too much shadow... it looks strange... I don't like it" - and was it not Elijah himself who pointed out, the advice from an actor colleague (Mel Gibson or Kevin Costner?) which influenced him most, was something like "There is always something you can do better. Don't be too satisfied with yourself." I'm paraphrasing here, but I think this actor had a point. To develop artistic refinement it is necessary to look critical at the own products. I need to reflect. I can only improve my abilites if I know what I can make better. This is the conscious part. During the process of art "making" you cannot remain in this reflective condition. Being creative is (for me) to be a channel, to let "it"
happen. That means, "it" can happen, but it needn't. When it did happen, than it is possible for me, to step back and to acknowledge the involvement of powers I do not know. But they have certainly played a huge part in the process. Probably I am in these moments as astonished and joyous as you all. ;) -I'm sure, Tg can say much more on the topic of "Subcreation"
Ceefour, you asked:
How did you decide on that particular screencap? What did you see in it, and not all the others, that made you want to draw it?
Hm. This very moment was always one of my favourites. Blossom's desciption "Frodo's mood of mingled awe and apprehension/uncertainty" is spot on, I think. I found the atmosphere of Faerie dreamlike mood underlayed with an unsizeable feeling of menace in the "Mirror of Galadriel" scenes absolutely fascinating. Yes, WHAT will he see? He is full of fear and yet he WILL look into the mirror. It is one example for Frodo's inner strength and courage. I just love these moments!
Honey, I'm really glad you survived the site loading this morning :D :k

Achila, I wonder of much will be shown of EW's Kevin on Starz. There has been next to nothing about his being in this movie, other than he is a cast member. Just his name in the first trailer and nothing in the second. His character is not profiled at the official site, either. Preparing for shock value? I am intrigued at what prompted Robert Rodriquez to cast EW in this role
I watched "The Faculty" this afternoon and have a feeling "Sin City" may be viewed mostly through my fingers over my eyes! Sometimes movies are best seen at home, with all the lights on. There are still parts of "Alien" I haven't seen. I saw, or didn't see, it in the theaters when it was first released; excruciating was the best word for it, although I liked the story.
Whiteling, thank you for your thoughtful answers. Had to wander over to tg's site to read her commentary again about Galadriel's Mirrior.
Mariole, glad you are feeling better.

I am intrigued at what prompted Robert Rodriquez to cast EW in this role
Rodriguez loves to use actors that he has used before and likes (Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayek, Cheech Marin, etc), and I think I even remember reading that his former actors always have a standing invitation to do cameos in his films (or, I might be making that last part up -- not sure, but I wouldn't put it past him).
That, coupled with the fact that Elijah was really interested in seeing Sin City turned into a film was almost enough to guarantee him a role, if there was one. Also, the Kevin of the book does, indeed, bear a striking resemblence to Elwood (nickname courtesy of Rodriguez, too, as a little bit of trivia): he is small and slender, dark hair and glasses, square-jawed... Elijah is undoubtedly prettier, but personally, I think that makes his character even creepier, somehow.

Just his name in the first trailer and nothing in the second.
There is a second trailer? is it onlline? I only just saw the first last week. They don't seem to be advertising the movie here much. I suppose we won't get it here until a week after the "civilized" (New York, and Los Angeles) parts of the world have it.
I hope Elijah will be doing some appearances on talk shows in the next month. He may be "only" third billed, but he gives such good interviews!
ETA: I finally got around to watching the actors' commentary on disk two last night. Usually this experience is rather like kissing through screen door, in that the emotional part of the experience is muted, along with the music, and having people chattering over the movie. But parts of it still made me cry. Except for the Grey Havens! Dom talking about how he can't do "sexy crying" and how his whole face migrates toward his nose just had me hysterical. Until Frodo turned and smiled, then it was all over with! :( Now I've had "dessert" and I'm not sure I want to go back and do "vegetables" (PJ and co. doing their commentary on the second disk.)

Thanks for the warm welcome. A bit OT - just to introduce myself briefly since Ive had the advantage of lurking for 6 months. I found Tolkien and Frodo in the 1970s and they have been my companions since. I became captivated with Movie Frodo with the release of the DVD of FOTR in August of 2002. And of course that led to EW. It was the wonderful Faculty Lounge that introduced me to Frolijah and Elido and so much more
intelligent conversations and humor and kindness. It was the GreyBook that convinced me to de-lurk. A special thanks to all those who were able to offer such beautiful contributions and then actually share them. Very Special. As I said to my spouse and daughter,I really like these people. So here I am, hoping to do more than lurk in this wonderful Lounge.
Whiteling, your drawing is amazing and appreciated. My printer is working fine and I am delighted with my reproduction. You HAVE so captured him here or I should say this piece really speaks to me. And I enjoyed your thoughts on your process

Not to mention that Robert knows full well what Elijah can do with just his eyes, as he's called upon to do here.
From what I've been reading about Kevin, the point is that he's utterly innocent looking, with the most angelic voice ever heard (only heard by Cardinal Roark, is the hook, I think). If that description doesn't just scream Elijah Wood, I don't know what does.

Hello, Faculty! *waves at everyone* I'm getting better, slowly. I'm up to 2.5 hours on the computer per day, if I take lots of breaks. All work stuff except for the tiniest amount of KD-dipping, which I can't resist. *sniffles*
but he is forever turning the Frodo picture - which stays on view, whatever the month - on my LOTR calendar to the wall, and launches regular attacks on my two poor unsuspecting Frodo dolls!
This cracked me up! I'm sure you don't suspect a thing.
But... can I say this? When I stayed at Elenya's, she had a SUCCOF in the room I was staying in. Wow, getting undressed that first night. I mean, I'll slo-mo the good Frodo bits as much as the next person, but stripping in front of him? :o Quite the experience!
Lovely drawing, Whiteling. :k

Whiteling!! I just love it. I just got home from work and my my my what an inspiring piece of art as an apetizer before dinner!! Just fabulous.
Regarding Elijah's third billing for Sin City---I think that's great, considering the number of stars in this feature. I did a news search the other day and was impressed that Elijah was always listed in the first two or three. And usually only two or three names were mentioned. This, I think is a good sign of things to come. I don't like violent movies, in general--but if it has a comic book element and a less "Real" feel--I can possibly take it. I hate most the feeling of what people will really think to do to other people--but if it is obviously over the top and fictional, it might not bother me as much.
OOh...I had a lovely surprise watching LOST last night. The "Australian" woman who told Hurly about the numbers is someone I know and used to work with. She worked where I work as her day job--her real calling being acting. She moved to LA a few years ago and I see her popping up here and there on TV programs. Nice surprise!! :)
Thank you for more info about yourself Saile!! I hope you love it here!! :)

Good morning, all, and hi, especially to Mariole -- glad to see you back, even for a limited time.
Here's something from Oscarwatch that should bring you guys some :D :D :D -- it was in a discussion thread about Sin City, and the name of a certain actor we all kinda like came up:
I would keep an eye on Ellijah Wood in this year's acting race... "Everything is Illuminated", "Sin City"... and having made recently so many acclaimed movies (LotR and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind), apart from his status as one of the few child actors that has actually made a great transition to youth can give him enough edge to make the cut for a nod.
He's around in the "dueness" for a nod list, isn't he?
Oh my. Things like this, in fora not exclusively for Elijah fans, really take my breath away.

Okay
Here goes....I've been wondering as of late whether or not I should get psychiatric assistance re:my little obsession
Too many EW connections...or maybe I'm just fixated on finding them.
Started on Monday when I took a plane home from a visit with my fellow Obsessee...nasty flight....lots of turbulance...thought maybe my hubby might be collecting on my life insurance quicker than I planned on...anyway...I had a lovely distraction sitting next to me....a handsome young man who had incredibly blue eyes and who happened to be named Elijah...yes he was flirting most of the trip home and sat on my lap for a great deal of the trip...unfortunately he was 18 months old!I did not ask his Mom if she was inspired by anyone WE might know when she chose that name...but I was most grateful for the charming distraction(BTW....he was quite a livewire....must be the name given him ;) )
And last night...I'm dozing on the couch with the TV on and that Carson Daly show is on...I think I hear his guest say something about an Elijah....can't be our guy....I mean Really Now.....just can't be...so I return to my half consciousness....then I hear her say..."Well I couldn't name him Frodo....he's a Great Dane" *eyes now fly open....who is this woman?...and this is our boy she's discussing*Did anyone catch this show last night?....she's the actress on "Joey"
So this morning...I'm convinced I'm just too wrapped up in this whole thing and decide to go to the library for a little R&R from the whole EW thing...decide to just cruise the music aisle...that should be safe ****wrong****.....someone has misplaced a CD...put the C in the A row.....Yeh you got it.....Cranberries and yeh it's the one with Ridiculous Thoughts....****grabs said CD and leaves library after quickly checking out****
What did Sam say about .....nothing for it?

(The following is in no way meant to offend anyone and is just for amusement, please. :) Borrowed from Al-Anon.)
The Faculty-Anon Group is a fellowship of individuals from around the world suffering from Elijaholicism and who share their Elijah encounters, pictures, and breaking news flashes in order to fulfill their common obsession. We believe Elijaholicism is an individual illness which could also affect our families if not hidden well. We fear that they will attempt to change our attitudes to kindle a recovery.
Faculty-Anon is not allied with any other website, live journal, forum, or thread; it does engage in massive research, postings and encourages pictures as evidence; it neither endorses nor opposes any one idea, yet welcomes open discussions. There are no dues for membership, only a common interest in the One Lad. Faculty-Anon is self-supporting through the voluntary contributions of those members who post on the thread and our beloved lurkers alike.
Faculty-Anon has but one purpose: to help individuals who are Elijaholics. We do this by always welcoming new members and giving comfort to each individual. We provide each other with complete understanding and encouragement.

Hey everybody,
Remember me? Long time no see.
Well, for some reason, it's been a while since I visited this place. I guess that the whole chapter Lord of the Rings movie + Elijah as Frodo has been somewhat closed.
Don't get me wrong: it's closed but not thrown away. The book, the movie and the actors (in particular Elijah Wood of course) will always have a special place in my heart but these days, I somehow do not feel the need to talk about them even if I miss this place a bit because I've met so many great people here. I really do like you guys very, very much.
What am I trying to say?
I'm going into lurking mode. Maybe I'll go out of the lurking mode some day but just for now, I'm going to leave the talking to you guys for a bit. OK?
I just didn't want to go away in silence without thanking you guys.
Thank you all for the lovely conversations we've had. The conversations on many forums on various fansites are so superficial and quite often end in disagreements and silly fights. In fact, this whole message board is great fun.
In here, I had the pleasure of talking to so many intelligent and warm people who have respect for a different point of view and are willing to discuss things without attacking somebody else who has the nerve to not agree with the general consensus.

Sorry to see you go, Moondancer :( I hope you'll pop in once in a while.
Here's another posting from Oscarwatch, like the one from yesterday:
I think there's a strong possibility that Wood could get a nom for Everything is Illuminated. Not top 10 status yet, but if it's critically well received, definitly.
The thing is, I could see him being a surprise winner. He is *ing Frodo after all.
I really don't think he's got a big part in Sin City (or even a small part, more a cameo). That said, he is getting his own character model and stuff, so he might be.

Happy Lurking Moondancer. I have to confess that after I had been following the threads for a few weeks as a lurker last year, I only registered initially as a member so I could PM you about the Day-O video. You were so welcoming and friendly that six months later I'm still here, hopefully for the long run as Elijah's career moves him on from LOTR.

I picked up a music magazine in the supermarket yesterday - drawn to it by the subject of the cover picture. Hubby looked over my shoulder and said, 'Oh no! Not Elijah Wood again!' I think this one is something of a mixed blessing. I know how much Elijah wanted this part, but if it hadn't come off well in the eyes of the Joy Division fans, it could've become a huge albatross for him. So perhaps this' an appropriate end to this story.

Mariole!! So good to see you. I hope you continue to improve, so that you can spend more time here. :k
TG, I was very interested to hear your report back on The Symphony. Did Howard Shore conduct? He came out to Australia and conducted a series of concerts at the Opera House. I found it a very powerful experience, although I think the short rehearsal time for the choral groups and soloists showed a little.
And belatedly to Shireling, I hope you enjoy your visit to NZ. I presume you will be visiting Matamata, where Hobbiton was sited. Stand for a moment under the Party Tree, and listen to the wind sing!
Last night I caught Avalon on TV, and I loved it! It is a delightfully constructed film, and Elijahs young self gave a very creditable performance. I think this might be the earliest of his work that Ive seen, but Id need to confirm that.
One thing I did want to mention: last weekend I attended a lecture being given by Richard Taylor and Tania Rodger of WETA. For two hours they shared their memories of the production of the Lord of the Rings movies, as well as the other movies they have worked on with Peter Jackson. Of all the cast of the LOTR films there were two who really made an impression on them. These two had a special demeanour, an aura, special spirit beyond their physical stature or acting ability. According to Richard you could feel it when you were with them. One was Cate Blanchett, and the other is Elijah Wood, who Richard described as the most mature, worldly beyond his years, and humble person.
I have a ticket for An Evening with Peter Jackson next Saturday night. Im thinking very hard of questions I might ask him (if a Q&A is included in it.)

estella rose, your report of what Richard Taylor and Tanya Rodgers said confirms what others have done, but, coming from them, it means even more.
Thank you so much for sharing that. :k
Moondancer, farewell but not goodbye? You were one of the main news bringers when I first started lurking here this summer. Just in case you hear anything else, just by accident, please post it here. :)

Hi, it's me again -- sorry -- I'll go away now. One of my friends just linked to this on her LJ, and it was too good not to post here (we may've had this on here before and some of you have read it, I'm sure, but I never had). It's an interview with Lij done after the Ice Storm, in 1996. Keep in mind that he's 15, although he could've said all this yesterday:
October 1, 1996
Q. Sheila Bapat
A. Elijah Wood
"I don't really have an ego at all. . ."
Although Elijah Wood has been noted by critics as being "The most confident actor of his generation," his view of himself is very different. I spoke with Elijah about his perspective of himself and his career, as well as his views on the whole "MTV Generation."
Q. What do you think has been your most challenging role so far?
A. My most recent character, in a film called The Ice Storm, was one of the most difficult; this guy, Mikey, was really spacey and more complicated than the outside view. Being hard to figure out, it was hard to play him.
Q. How was he spacey?
A. He thinks a lot, and he's always somewhere else besides reality. But he sees things better than other people see them. Another really challenging role for me was probably Stu Simmons in The War.
Q. The War was a very deep movie. How does acting in movies like that effect you emotionally?
A. You have to put a lot of yourself into it, and conjure up emotions. Some actors try to think unhappy thoughts and make themselves sad. I don't really do that, but I try to make my whole body sad. I just completely put myself into the role while the camera is rolling.
Q. There are lots of young male actors your age, like Jonathan Taylor Thomas. Is it very competitive for you?
A. No. I'm not competing for roles. I think others create competition between us. Like [during The Good Son], Macauley Culkin and I supposedly had some competition, but it wasn't true. For me, acting is finding good material and doing the best I can at it, not beating another actor.
Q. People must always come up to you and say, "We've watched you grow up on film." Does it bother you that you're life seems so accessible to people?
A. It's kind of like you're under a microscope. It amazes me, because I don't realize how closely people watch me. But what they're observing is not personal - it's just a character.
Q. How have you changed as an actor from your first big role in the film Avalon to today?
A. Over the last 3-4 years, I've viewed acting in a more serious light. I think I love it more now, and I have an even greater appreciation for it. Every role since Avalon has been a step up, and has pushed me into the adult acting area.
Q. What type of support do you get from your family?
A. I'm not pushed into acting. The support I get from my family is wonderful. If I wanted to quit, they would support that decision too.
Q. Have you ever done anything to make your parents upset?
A. Little things, like if I don't feed the dogs or something. Sometimes I'll be mean to my sister, but she can be annoying [laughing]. Just brotherly things, nothing specific.
Q. How does school fit into your schedule?
A. I have a home study program. I work half on the Internet, and half with books. English has always been my favorite, because I love writing, creative writing and poetry are a lot of fun for me. I love reading, too. I have so many favorite books, like Dracula and The Hunchback of Notre Dame.
Q. I heard you're a straight A student. True?
A. Well, yeah, but on my last report card I had a few A minuses. I just want to have sthe best grades possible.
Q. Why are you concerned about your education?
A. A good education, especially English, can contribute greatly to an actor's perspective. An education also makes you a well-rounded person.
Q. What if someone told you they wanted to quit school to pursue acting full time?
A. I would say no. Education is too valuable. It forms who you're going to be, and helps you excel at more things. I guess I'm just a believer in staying in school. Quitting school is giving up, in a way.
Q. Our generation has been called the MTV Generation, Generation X, etc. Are these fair and accurate?
A. I think they're stereotypical. Yeah, there are slackers, but there are millions of people who really work hard and pursue things. Those labels don't apply to everyone.
Q. Movies have gotten a bad rap for being too violent and profane these days. Is this fair?
A. The people need to be responsible and not be influenced so much by movies. As far as content goes in films, the morals of the people have definitely declined. I mean, even just four years ago, movies that are rated NC-17 were unheard of.
Q. Do movies reflect society?
A. Yeah, because someone had to write it down - it came from someone's mind, from their surroundings and experiences. I think movies do reflect what we have become, and what we are becoming.
Q. Are there any actors you'd like to work with?
A. Lots! Robin Williams, Kevin Spacey, Tom Hanks, Dustin Hoffman. I'd love to be directed by Kenneth Branagh. He's capable of so much. He really made Shakespeare come alive [in Much Ado About Nothing].
Q. You've been really aloof about the whole dating thing. Why is that?
A. I am sincerely not dating right now, because I don't really have time for it. As far as having a girlfriend, it would have to be someone really special. But it would be a responsibility; I would want to make time for something like that. Also, I don't want to grow up too fast. Childhood is an amazing thing.
Q. How important to you is it to win an Oscar or one of those big awards?
A. Too much importance has been put on the Oscar. An Oscar for me would be a really nice compliment, but I wouldn't think of myself differently. A lot of times, after people win Oscars, they believe they're proven themselves as actors or actresses, when they're only being honored for a particular role. And when you believe you are good, you're not always so good anymore.
Q. Do you believe you're not that good?
A. I can always be better. I'm not bad, but I'm not great. If I stop striving to do better and assume that I've already achieved greatness, I wouldn't continue doing the best I could.
Q. Critics have called you, "the most confident actor" of your generation. How do you respond to praise like that?
A. You know, it doesn't even effect me. I don't understand why. I don't really have an ego at all. That's just a compliment, and it's nice, but I have to keep striving to actually achieve what was said about me.
Q. Would you do another film with animals?
A. Yeah, I love animals; they can be easier to work with than people. [In Flipper], I would have gotten right in with the dolphins on the first day if they asked me to.
Q. How do you deal with it when a film doesn't do well?
A. It doesn't really bother me that much. I'm emotionally attached to the film that I do, but more so to the role that I played. How the film does in the box office is only at the back of my mind.
Q. Do you want to direct?
A. I really do, but I hate to say that, because it is kind of jumping on the bandwagon. I just love film making altogether, and I have a great respect for it. I love creating a story, putting it on film, and executing it in a beautiful way. And I decided I want o be a director on my own, not because everyone else is doing it.
Q. What qualities in a person do you most admire?
A. I like honesty, and people that are real, who don't buy into all the bad stuff [like drugs], but who are really just themselves. It's sad because a lot of kids these days feel they have to be a certain way in order to be popular. I think being different, being against the grain of society, is the greatest thing in the world.

Achila When I say I picked up that magazine, I mean that's all I did - I didn't actually buy it. The Joy Division article is quite long, so I didn't hang around to read it. Now if I knew Elijah had landed the Ian Curtis role I may have forked out the £4 for that magazine.
As for any actors who are being consideered - not a clue, I'm afraid. I looked at a couple of JD forums, and Elijah's name was mentioned by a couple of posters - not very well-received by others, though. Someone said something like: 'Elijah Wood - five-foot-nothing; Ian Curtis - over six foot.'
I know how much Elijah wanted this part, but if it hadn't come off well in the eyes of the Joy Division fans, it could've become a huge albatross for him.
You may well be right, Achila! Thanks too, for the interview. I had read that one before, but what a mature fifteen year-old.
Re Mikey in The Ice Storm:
Q. How was he spacey?
A. He thinks a lot, and he's always somewhere else besides reality.
Here's a very small snippet from an interview with Ang Lee, which I found a while back on Rotten Tomatoes.
Mostly, though, it was by relating to the characters that Lee was able to get in tune. "I felt close to Mikey, the spaced-out kid. I remember directing Elijah Wood and saying, `Your speech is not right, it's too clear, too articulated. You're two seconds behind everyone. Try to loosen up here a little bit, let your jaw slacken when you talk.' And he got the idea right away.
'...Elijah Wood, who Richard described as the most mature, worldly beyond his years, and humble person.
What a lovely quote from Richard Taylor, estella rose -Thanks for sharing that. I hope you enjoy the Evening with Peter Jackson next weekend, you lucky girl! :) Of course, you could always come back here and tell us all about it! ;)
Nice to see you de-lurking, Goldie. :)

Achila!! Such cool stuff. Both the bit you provided from Oscar Watch and the Ice Storm interview. I love it.
ANd Estella Rose---Thank you so much for sharing what Richard Taylor said. That was so cool :D . I would love it if PJ spoke up about Elijah. Please let us know.
Moondancer--I do hope you get tempted back in again. I'm always wondering what has happened to people who sort of disappear. It's sort of like family breaking up....so I am going to think that you are still around, even if we don't hear from you!! Once elijah's new movies come out, maybe you won't be able to help yourself :p Do take care :k
Blossom--thanks for the Ian Curtis update. Didn't we hear they are casting in March?? Maybe we will still be surprised. And though you may be right, Bunnie, that it might have gone ill for him had he not pleased the Ian Curtis fans...elijah has had a lot of experience winning doubters over to him. Apparently he did with the footballers he worked with--he certainly did for lotrs fans....I think he would on this one, too. :)
MOONDANCER!!! sorry to hear you are leaving us!!
but in away i can understand you!!
but i hope we will see you again sometime!!!
i will miss you!!!!!!! :k :k
take good care of you!!!!

Moondancer, we will miss you! I hope you will be back to "visit" from time to time!
Achila, I love that "Ice Storm" interview! Thanks for posting it here. And I'm eatin' up the "Oscar watch" quotes! :D
Blossom, thank you for providing the quote from Ang Lee.
Estella Rose, thanks for reporting what Richard Taylor said. I just love to hear people say things like that about Elijah!
I was musing, in a quite moment today, about the one-expression theory. (OK, I was thinking about Elijah! :haha: ) It occured to me that when EW is emoting, in those moments when one of his characters is particularly expressive, I not only recognize the expression, but I know what it feels like to have that expression on my own face, what that muscle memory is. At the same time I associate the feelings that come with that particular expression, and empathize with the character. (All of which makes me wonder if those "one expression" people aren't missing some part of their frontal lobe, or something!) What is even more amazing is that Elijah seems to "wear" his face differently for each character, and consequently their emotive expressions are subtly different. WOW! Just Wow!

Great start! Since I can't find the quote ceefour posted in the game on the other side, I'll have a go with this instead...as I did have an Elijah photo sighting today...
Number Two: Be vigilant, yet discrete, relaxed, but on the lookout. Keep one eye open and one ear always listening. However, it may at times be beneficial to attempt the relaxed attitude only since it seems when you can't remember something or can't find that thing your looking for and give up, that it seems to just appear.
Such was the One Lad sighting I had today in the beauty shop as the hobbit-size children and I were getting haircuts. He was there, in the hair style book that I just happened to look through as we were waiting. You probably know the picture. Short, spikey hair, medium blue shirt, black pants. And, yes, even though I knew better, I pointed him out to the children. Their response looked like this...
ETA: The Evidence...not quite the pose but it must be in this same photo shoot...sorry, it's a little small too...

Shelbyshire!! I want to get my hair cut where you do!! Just like Ylla said she is experiencing, Elijah is everywhere!
And whoops, I misquoted in my last post--it was Achila who said that the Ian Curtis role might have been a huge albatross had it not gone down well with Ian's fans--not Bunnie.
Anyhow, I posted after that saying that Elijah had won over doubters in the past (Hooligans and Lotrs)--but in giving that further thought today, I realized that it is quite different when one is playing an actual real life person. It is really hard to please the fans. I am never satisfied with portrayals of, for instance, one of the BEatles. The actor can't CHOOSE how to interpret a character--they have to be a real person. And of course have to look just like them, to please the fans--or at least look as good (no problem there). Though, because Ian Curtis is not universally known, it could really work as a movie for people who don't know him already--even if it is really hard to please the die hard fans. But of course, if this is a small movie, that would be the primary audience. Unless it became popular as a good movie in it's own right, not just as a biography piece. Anyhow--I still bet Elijah could pull it off--but I now do think for any actor it is a bit of a risk. Did I go back and forth on that one a bit?? ;) yeah, I did. :)

Hello ladies of the Faculty...
Blossom
Often people just disappear, and we're left wondering what's become of them,
Oh dear...I fear that this is the case with me a little... :o
I confess that I call in here to read this wonderful thread everyday...but rarely have the time to post...( as is the case with the other threads I read -Frodo's Harem and the Elijah/Frodo Thread at TORC )...RL being such a hard taskmaster...
So Moondancer, Welcome to the realms of Lurkdom...I, too, shall miss your contribution to this thread, but I completely understand !!
Achila
Thank-you for posting that interview...I haven't read it before, but I think I've read similar responses to similar questions in other interviews...
Well, that just proves that the Faculty has been on the right track with him all along...What was that we were saying about him disappearing into a role so completely that it doesn't look like he's acting at all, and that he actually becomesthat person ?
As for playing a real person...I reckon that this MUST be a real challenge, of a different and quite special kind for any actor, and they would have to watch hours and hours of footage of that person, if it's available, of course, to get all the mannerisms just right. Just recently, our very own BBC ( I think, or was it Channel 4 ? ) did a very good bio-pic of the man voted by his peers as the funniest man of the Century...Peter Cook. They cast Rhys Ifans in the role, and he was marvellous...just the right type of face and build for Pete...and his facial expressions were spot-on...but it still wasn't the real thing somehow...maybe it was because Peter was a very well-known, and well-loved, personality, larger than life and only relatively recently departed from this world !!
I don't know wether it is better to do an actual documentary, with a voiceover, and real footage of the person concerned...no chance there of not being convincing !!
I couldn't bear it if Elijah took on this role, ( and he already has said that he loves Joy Division's music ) didn't come off as totally convincing, and got slated by the fans of JD as a result..they ARE the first ones you have to get on your side, with something like this, aren't they ?
Still a big shame that it doesn't look like he's going to do it though !!
Lurking around LJ-Land, I came across a very good fan-made short video, consisting of behind-the-scenes pics of all the hobbits, and PJ set to a marvellous instrumental version of "Into The West"...truly lovely it is...
If anyone would like the link, just PM me...you know where I am !!! ;)
MORNING TO YOU ALL!!!! :k :k
I SO AGREE WITH YOU LADY WENDY!!

As the creator of several - very amateur - Frodo/Elijah music videos myself, I must reiterate Lady Wendy and Wood's recommendation for that 'Into The West' music video. Entitled, 'Journey's End,' it's very thoughtfully made. The images are especially moving and the instrumental version of the song is just beautiful! :)
Oh dear...I fear that this is the case with me a little...
I do see you over at Torn, Lady Wendy - I lurk in that Frodo thread quite frequently. I found your link for that music video there yesterday. Thanks. :) It's always good to see you back in the Faculty though.

Hi everyone!
I'm going to have to relinquish my lurker status soon from posting too much. Thanks for the lovely posts - Whiteling I love the colours in your pic, the whole thing is just gorgeous. I used to like drawing faces - I wish I was as talented as you!
Anyway I popped in to add a couple of things - Blossom, I saw that Mojo cover too and completely had an Elijah moment! I did have a chance to scan the article but saw nothing about the new film - I was in a rush though, so may have missed something.
Ceefour mentioned a while back that the Sin City trailer with Elijah at the end was the first trailer, and the longer one with Josh Hartnett was the second one. As far as I am aware (and give me a slap if I'm wrong!) the Josh Hartnett trailer actually came out first as ComicCon footage but was off the internet for a while for copyright reasons. So the lack of Elijah in that clip merely means that they are building him up slowly. I hope there's more of him in the next trailer!
Finally, I've realised I'm very bad about wishing happy birthday to people and I keep on forgetting whose birthday it is until it is too late. Sorry to everyone and happy birthday to everyone I've forgotten! I'll try and do better in future.
hi all!!
just saw that i posted two in a road!! :( :(
sorry must have been tired this morning!!!!!

Yep, Alyon, this' exactly what I meant. When a person is your hero, it's unlikely that ANYONE will ever be able to portray them in a satisfying way (I had this very experience so I know how this is), and in this particular case, I'd rather not see Elijah do this role than get the sort of derision he'd be bound to.

Greetings to The Faculty! :k
Au revoir, Moondancer! :)
Random, I listed the "Sin City" trailers in the order I saw them, so you are probably right. :D
estella marie, thank you for sharing about your evening with Richard Taylor and Tania Rodger; enjoy your evening with PJ (resisting the urge to tackle estella marie and beg her to take me with her, please oh please!).
Lady Wendy, the video was lovely. (sniffle, sniffle) I linked to it from TORc, also.
I hope I am not stepping on any toes by saying tg has two new pages of screen caps for "The Mirror of Galadriel," with thoughtful-as always-analysis.
Last month, I watched a program about how the brain works (sorry, can't remember the station). Researchers scanned the brains of people making different facial expressions, then scanned the brains of people looking at pictures of the people. The section of the brain stimulated was the same for both groups. The researchers also scanned the brain activity of people carrying a stack of boxes and trying to walk and balance the boxes. They then showed a film of the box carrying people to others. The brain activity of the people watching was exactly the same as the people doing the activity. (I hope I am explaining this coherently.) While I was watching this, I thought somehow this must relate to EW and his acting. Then Honeyelf wrote her post saying "I not only recognize the expression, but I know what it feels like to have that expression on my own face, what that muscle memory is. At the same time I associate the feelings that come with that particular expression, and empathize with the character." So, I conclude, our interest in EW is not mere fandom, but has a basis in scientific fact!

Still a big shame that it doesn't look like he's going to do it though !!I wasn't here at the time, but didn't exactly this scenario happen back about 1999? To someone of Elijah's caliber, playing an angsty, tortured rocker should be a piece of cake.

From what I've been reading about Kevin, the point is that he's utterly innocent looking, with the most angelic voice ever heard (only heard by Cardinal Roark, is the hook, I think). If that description doesn't just scream Elijah Wood, I don't know what does.
I thought Kevin was supposed to be a mute character. I don't know much about Sin City, so please if anyone can explain the concept I'd be very happy.

I thought Kevin was supposed to be a mute character. I don't know much about Sin City, so please if anyone can explain the concept I'd be very happy. He *is* mute, but supposedly there's one person who had heard his voice, and that was Cardinal Roark. Much beyond that, I can't tell you, unfortunately, since I'm a novice to this too, but this' what I've picked up from my travels to the many Sin City fan sites scattered around.
Regarding my Ian Curtis comments -- I'm very well aware of the "kill me now" comparison. But playing a fictional character, even one as beloved as Frodo, and portraying a real person (who was done once before in another movie, btw, and many Joy Division fans really loved that actor's performance) is quite different. I certainly didn't mean to give you the impression that I thought Lij couldn't do this -- you guys should know me better than that! -- but very often, these depictions of public figures go very wrong. Although we -- the "lay" movie-going public -- thought Cate's portrayal of Kate Hepburn was great, I'm willing to bet there are rabid KH fans who thought it was utter rubbish. To tell the truth, the Kate that you saw in the movie was a caricature -- who knows if she actually acted like that in private? But it was made to be recognizable, in the sense that it retained KH's more familiar mannerisms as seen on the screen, and that was kind of a gamble.
As many of you know from my earlier comments and so on, my very very beloved hero is John Denver -- he has been for 30 years. The film portrayal of him by Chad Lowe was an abomination and captured nothing of the real person that I and my fellow fans knew extremely well, to the point that I can't see Chad on TV without running from the room, screaming (ylla and Pelagia can confirm -- yes, this year's Oscars were torture for me). The potential exists for the same thing to happen with an Elijah-driven Ian Curtis (although it's completely impossible for Elijah to be anywhere near as awful as Chad was  ). This person has become something of a mythic figure for the Joy Division fans, and I suspect that whoever gets this role is going to have an uphill battle. A part of me is glad it's not Elijah.
ETA: An article about Jonathan Safran Foer that you might enjoy reading -- who does the description sound like???

Achila, I think you are clearly above suspicion to ever adumbrate Elijah couldn't do a certain role ;).
IMHO portraying "real" people is a tricky thing for an actor. And like you say, these depictions often go wrong. However, I am lucky to say that I know at least one example where a RP portrayal was truly convincing: it is a (German) TV adaptation of the memoirs of the youngest daughter of Thomas Mann, Elisabeth Mann Borghese. The actor who played Thomas Mann was Armin Mueller-Stahl (yes, Elijah's acting partner in "Avalon" :) ), and he was simply brilliant. I suspect it was good that he didn't pretend to BE Th. Mann, but to give HIS interpretation of this character. He looked very similar but he wasn't an exact copy. My own imagination was allowed to complete the portray. (I hope I'm making sense  )

Thank you for the pointer to Richard Taylor's and Tania Rodger's presentation. It was delightful! What a lovely man. It's funny now to learn that he is largely deaf-- it helps explain the voice! I just watched Hidalgo for the first time Saturday, and I had to keep rewinding to hear some of Viggo's whispery lines. So poor Richard must have really had a time of it, particularly in light of Viggo's wicked sense of humor!
Grumpy, your post had me laughing out loud! FrodoFrodoFrodoFrodoFrodoFrodoFrodoFrodoFrodoFrodo
If Elijah doesn't get the role, then Ian Curtis's wife must be looking at pictures with her eyes shut.
Eyes shut will still work, if she moves her fingers over Elijah's face. :p
Thinking of actors portraying RL people, particularly in regards to Achila's comment about Cate B and Kate Hepburn, I remember seeing a hilarious show once. Some mimic (I don't remember names well :o ) was imitating Captain Kirk of Star Trek -- on the same show that had William Shatner as a guest! The halarious bit was that the mimic could "do" Captain Kirk better than Shatner-- who had played the character-- in side-by-side tests (according to audience reaction and giggles, of course). The guy explained it was because he takes the gestures that Shatner had used to create the character, and then exaggerates them in a way that an actor playing a role never would. It was really interesting -- and you gotta love Shatner for his sense of humor.

...a fictional character, even one as beloved as Frodo...
Achila, since this isn't the Green Dragon I'll let this pass... once... If it happens again, I may have to sentence you to reading all seven essays in the "Is Middle-earth Real?" series (and I could write more ;) ). :haha: Third offense calls for a life sentence of wearing a "Frodo Lives" button. ;)
Actually, in some ways, portraying a character that many readers consider real, but no one has physically seen can be more difficult. I don't think it happened with Frodo so much (except for those readers who missed the description of Fallohides in the prologue and thought Frodo should be "stocky"), but movie-Aragorn was something of a conundrum because for some people he was exactly the way they'd pictured the character while for others he was completely different. So there was no way everyone's vision of the character could be met.
-----------
Even though Elijah looks so much like Ian Curtis, he is a foot or so shorter, which could cause some logistical problems in casting other actors--maybe they could use forced perspective. :p
----------
Mariole--Was that Captain Kirk impersonator John Belushi on Saturday Night Live, by any chance? Perhaps the same program on which William Shatner made the [in]famous "Get a life" statement? (Meant to be a joke, but not taken that way by some trekkers. How nice to have fellow geeks involved in the LotR movies :p .)

C4--No toes stepped on ;) . I'm glad to know that someone checks once in awhile even if I don't say anything. :p I'd been working on the pages even before Whiteling posted her newest masterpiece  . I also realized I should have put a link to the "Perilous Realm" essay (http://www.frodolivesin.us/id287.htm) on those pages. Even though it's about the book, it was really the movie that got me thinking about it.
I seem to be in "semi-lurk" mode. I'm reading the thread, but I haven't had time to follow any of the links posted. Still too much going on for me to be very involved. Working with the screencaps is kind of therapeutic, especially when I can do just a few of them at a time, but it's hard to call the brain in from other pursuits to come up with a post.
I thought I'd had the entire Mirror scene screencapped but when I got as far as those two pages, the next pictures that popped up in the file were from Day-O, so I'll have to do some more screencapping before I can do more.

Tg, I was thinking about you this morning. Glad to see you!! :)
Even though Elijah looks so much like Ian Curtis, he is a foot or so shorter, which could cause some logistical problems in casting other actors--maybe they could use forced perspective.
You're joking :p --but I was also thinking about this. They really could cast so that Elijah's height difference wasn't apparent. Or they could give him Galadrial shoes!!! ;) Didn't Cate have to wear high shoes under her gown to give her height in some scenes??? :p Helen Bohnam Carter had to wear high shoes to make her taller in Fight Club. And--I was just told that Buffy (what's the actresses name)--is only 5'3", but you know, she seems taller. Of course those are all women--but you just know they have done the tricks with men, as well. Though I would rather not think of Elijah on high shoes. ;) :D I think they could just cast around him, and shoot to make him look taller. :D ?? Maybe??
Yeah, they could--unless they have already signed other actors for the supporting characters.
Yeah, TG. Thank you for the reminder. Frodo does live. Slap us if we ever forget :k
ETA: does anyone know if Elijah et al have gone to do their King Kong bit yet?? At ORC, PJ was there to say hello via a taped message for us all, and in it he said if any of his esteemed actors can hear him, he wanted them to get on a plane to help him with King Kong, as they had promised to come down and get squished. Ian McKellan has an update on his site in which he said he envied those cast mates that got called down to New Zealand for King Kong. But the ORC message was in January, and it seems Elijah has been at a number of events since then and likely not to New Zealand. Just wondering.. :)

Re: that new Sin City trailer...
There is about a second of Kevin (Elijah, or, possibly, a stunt double: I really can't tell) in there that is new -- blink, and you miss it -- about three-quarters of the way in or better. It's a very quick shot of him, and if you're curious (and don't mind a minor spoiler), you can find caps here (http://www.beyond-blue.net/pics.shtml) of the very brief sequence.
And I have to agree, ZK -- it will be worth the price of admission to King Kong to be able to witness at least three of the four hobbits pop up in there, whether they're being stepped on  or however PJ plans on making use of their talent. :p

Hi, Tg! It's so good to see you. I hope your week goes more smoothly than expected. No one deserves such a mess! *sends you good thoughts*
Was that Captain Kirk impersonator John Belushi on Saturday Night Live, by any chance?
Sorry, I have erased all other data related to this memory. It might have been--the time frame sounds right. But I have no memories at all of Shatner making his speech. (Then again, I tend to forget bad incidents and have only happy memories, so this might be erased under "forget the bad, remember the good!" Because I still adore the original Star Trek.) :)
Bunnie, thank you so much for the link to the stills. How did someone decide the face was Elijah's? Honestly, I can't tell. But the last shot, of just his thigh --that looks like Elijah's thigh. Well, it does! I would not be surprised if Elijah does his own stunts. He's a very physical actor.
i still can`t understand why they are hiding kevin in those trailers
I feel like I did when watching the trailers for TTT. I kept asking myself, "Where is Frodo?" And when the film came out, it became apparent that was Aragorn's film and Frodo was quite definitely the B plot. So my expectation is that, while Kevin might be an "important" role for various plot reasons, we'll see very little of him. Perhaps even less than we saw of Patrick in ESOTSM, which was a pretty small role, IMO, particularly as we never saw his face clearly. Kevin looks like he'll be a shadowy glowing-glasses silhouette most of the time. I want to see Elijah's lovely face doing acting. I wouldn't want to see such a violent film as SC is appearing to be without the solace of knowing I'll actually see the only actor I would care to see in it.
King Kong, though, that one I'll see! :D I refuse to miss our former hobbits getting trampled underfoot. :p PJ likes to inject humor in his films, also, which suits me much better as a viewer.

Well, it does! I would not be surprised if Elijah does his own stunts. He's a very physical actor. Considering that Lij has done these things before, it's my bet it's him, on a wire. You can see that it is when he jumps up, even though it's only a quick flash. And btw, watch VERY carefully for a few shots almost right near the end, right after it says Special Guest Director Quentin Tarantino -- that's Lij too, fighting with Marv (Mickey Rourke) -- and look for his upraised hand with claws on it. It goes by so fast that it's hard to tell what you're even looking at. OMG, I can't believe how exciting this is!

No, there will definitely be more, Mariole. It's not that it's the B plot, it's as we've said -- it's that Elijah Wood as Kevin, the mute cannibal, is being kept as a surprise. Robert Rodriguez apparently even said as much at some point. It's exactly the same reason you never saw Frodo at Mount Doom in the ROTK trailer.

I'm already dancing around the house to the music from the "Sin City" trailer, and now I have to clap my hands while chanting "I do believe in Frodo! I do believe in Frodo!"? My family will think I'm completely bonkers.
I have mixed feelings about cameos in "King Kong." While any hobbits is a good thing, it may take me out of the movie. I have been following the Production Diaries at KongisKing.net. It began as a way to continue the LOTR experience, I suppose, listening to the familiar voices and seeing the familiar faces. But I am now very interested in seeing this film for itself.

I am dropping in to say - wow- really enjoying the conversation here. I do seem to be playing "catch up".
Thank you to estella rose for the wonderful quote from Richard Taylor and Tonia Rodger about ew. I do like hearing those kind words about ew, and without eye witness reports these observations dont make the news. Heres hoping you will share with us your Evening with Peter Jackson. Rumor has it that Peter Jackson will return to LOTR after he has completed King Kong to finish up with LOTR I guess that means figure out what to do with all the extra footage. Anyone hear of that?
I have been thinking about honeyelfs theory
At the same time I associate the feelings that come with that particular expression, and empathize with the character. (All of which makes me wonder if those "one expression" people aren't missing some part of their frontal lobe, or something!) What is even more amazing is that Elijah seems to "wear" his face differently for each character, and consequently their emotive expressions are subtly different. WOW! Just Wow!
--she may be on to something - for sure. I love it!
I did have a chance to check out the Indiana State Museum while in Indianapolis last weekend. The LOTR Motion Picture Trilogy The Exhibition is scheduled for Oct 6, 2005 January 3, 2006. This IS the exhibit developed by the Museum of NZ Te Papa that has been touring the world since its opening December, 2002. Frodo is going to be there well not in person of course, but I guess for me there is so much magic associated with Frodo/Frolijah I will be drawn to it no doubt.
For me, Frodo has always been the heart and soul of the movie (and book) and time has not altered that. I cannot conceive of LOTR the movie trilogy without EW. For this trilogy to have been such a success must mean that there were many factors that contributed almost the perfect storm. Yet IMVHO I think that EW was a major factor in its success.
I have listened to the appendices, hoping for Peter Jacksons declaration of this fact. I have been often frustrated when the conversation in the appendices turned to something inane nothing to do with what is on the screen. Or at least nothing of interest. But Peter Jackson did in the 2002 Charlie Rose interview (with Elijah and Viggo also present) talk about how he saw Frodo in EWs audition tape. An understated comment, yes, but I thought revealing. And in the Journey to Middle Earth (A&E longer version with added footage) it was not only Sean that talked about Elijahs eyes. It was Peter Jackson that said IIRC that he thought of Elijahs eyes as the windows into his soul
..An absolutely incredible actor at knowing how to use his eyes. Clearly PJ used close ups of EWs eyes to their advantage in the film.
But it was in the appendices of the ROTK in the good bye segment where I felt PJ finally said what I was waiting to hear. IIRC He said that saying goodbye to Elijah was the hardest because IIRC Frodo is the heart and soul of the story . And then in his teary good bye what he kept repeating to Elijah was thank you. I sort of decided to interpret that to mean that Elijah was also the heart and soul of the movie and the only words that were adequate were Thank you. IMVHO.
So having this Exhibit finally tour reasonably close by - I find very exciting. It is still magical to me. I do have information on the Indiana State Museum and the Exhibit if any one is interested.
Cheers!

There was conversation some time ago about the possibility of a Faculty Meeting at the Indiana exhibit, since a fair number of us are in the Midwest. I'd certainly still be up for that, as long as we can plan it fairly far in advance (we all know how hard it is to schedule meetings! :p ).
And, saile, IMHO it's significant that PJ chose to begin and end each of the three movies with Frodo. I don't think that would happen from coincidence. (And IIRC, PJ said in the Charlie Rose interview that he knew Frodo had to have "magic" and that he hadn't seen that in any of the over 200 auditions he'd seen before Elijah's--but he found it there.)
BTW, that got me thinking about The Symphony, as IMHO it was not Frodocentric. Frodo wasn't completely ignored, but I was surprised at some of the soundtrack material that wasn't used in the new piece. From the program notes, it seemed Howard Shore was especially excited about the way the music could denote the different cultures, and perhaps the focus was more on that. Someone asked about Howard Shore directing--no, and he wasn't there for Q&A either, as he was at once place where he didn't direct. Not a sign of him. That's good in a way, in that it shows that the music is spreading out into the "general population," although it would have wonderful to see him.

Hi, everyone!
I come bearing some early reviews from Ain't It Cool News. There are two reviews here: the first one likes Charlie, doesn't like Elijah much AT ALL (and never has, so that's tempering the review, I'm sure), and has minor spoilers. The second one doesn't like Charlie, but does like Elijah, but has some pretty major spoilers in it. I only just skimmed, because I'm trying to avoid being completely spoiled, but it looked fairly complimentary both to Elijah and the film in general. :)
AICN reviews (http://www.aintitcoolnews.com/display.cgi?id=19593)
And Honey, I have seen caps where you can see Kevin's face, and they're either so blurry that you can't really see it, or he's making some weird, scrunched-up face so that you can't even tell it's him. I don't think there are going to be prosthetics, though. And I just think they're trying to keep his face hidden simply for the shock value for when the audience -- the ones who are clueless as to what his role is like, anyway -- suddenly realizes that Frodo is a serial killer. :p

I found the long trailer here:
http://progressive.stream.aol.com/aol/us/moviefone/movies/2005/sincity_019736/sincity_trlr_02_dl.mov
I freeze-framed (froze-framed?) through Elijah's part (research, ladies, research!) and there's a frame or two that very clearly show him in profile. Yes, I do believe that's really him and I don't believe that he's wearing any kind of prosthetics. We've just never seen that expression on any character that he's played. It's *not* a nice expression - much not-nicer than any of the Hooligans caps that we've seen. I think that it's a function of acting rather than makeup or prosthetics.
Between Hooligans and Sin City, and also Frodo beating the - er - stuffings out of Gollum outside Shelob's lair, I'm gaining even more respect for The One Lad's ability to portray anger, fury, and Not-Niceness. It makes it clear to me that the "infuriated gerbil" expression when he pulled the sword on Sam in Osgiliath was acting, and not because Elijah Wood couldn't portray meanasdirt.
Thanks for the EII cap! That's beautiful!!!
Sheesh! Sorry about the 2 posts!
Here there be (Hooligans) spoilers:

My grandmother's brothers, who were probably all of 5'4" or less, were known as the meanest men in the valley, inclined to settle arguments with their fists. Sez who short guys can't be tough!?!

I did read these in depth, and the spoilers have actually got me really excited about Hooligans. I would say that the first reviewer is probably a male, suffering from an overload of testosterone, who has trouble getting in touch with his emotional or intelligent side. Hence his affinity for Charlie Hunman's character rather than Elijah's. I don't like quick shaky camera work myself, but his main reason for not liking it was that you couldn't get a good look at the guys beating each other up.
I am really glad the second review put a more balanced and thoughtful view forward, and I was also pleased to hear that there are some lighter moments in the film, giving Elijah the chance to show his versatility as an actor. Without wanting to see Charlie Hunman fail, if he does get a load of grief over here in the UK about his London accent, it will help to stop him stealing the show from Elijah.
I am sure I will be as drawn into the action as I was with Roadhouse, and daft as it sounds, Wimbledon, where despite not being the least bit interested in tennis, I was living every shot with the guy.
Good times are a comming!! World skating championships next week, Sin City in April, Harry Potter in July and then hopefully a double dose of Elijah in August/September.

Off-topic rant
World skating championships next week...
I'm very unhappy with ABC  . I've been watching figure skating on that network since 1968 (yes, Peggy Fleming and all). IMHO they're the one that gets it right, and I don't like it when NBC ends up televising the [winter] Olympics. (And I would happily have Dick Button's children--but if he wants that, he'd better hurry up :p .)
And now they're putting the World Championships ON CABLE! (Yes, I did mean to shout  !) So I (and a fair number of other people) won't be able to watch them. The World Championships FES!!! I like to think that Dick argued against it behind the scenes.
Times have changed--used to be that even the World Championhships were shown as a segment of "Wide World of Sports," aired several weeks after they occurred (but figure skating didn't make it into the newspapers, so we never knew the results beforeheand and it was as exciting as watching it live.) There's a broader audience now, just in case they haven't noticed. I know ABC owns ESPN, but this is ridiculous!
End of off-topic rant
I'd forgotten that I'd signed up on the Indiana State Museum's website for updates on the LotR exhibit--til I opened up my email this morning and found this. (It was part of a page with pics, etc., and I didn't notice the title until I copied it into Word :D .)

Hobmom--I love that EII pic. Are there more :z: :z: ?
Thanks to everyone for the updates. I'm still not following any of the links, but will hop over to AICN first chance I get. I'm curious about who wrote the reviews--especially since we know Harry's a friend of Elijah's.
----BTW, since we're on the "Austin connection" -- Regarding the question of why Elijah would have taken the part of Kevin, not only is Sin City going to be a groundbreaking movie, but it's also Robert Rodriguez's baby from its first inception. With the sense of family among him and the actors who've worked with him, I could see him calling up Elijah and saying, "Hey, wanna play a cannibal in this really cool movie?" the same way he called him up and asked him to be "The Guy" (after he'd already told some people that Elijah would be playing the part  ). Regarding how much screen time Elijah might have, it'll certainly be affected by the fact that Kevin is in only one of the three stories that are going to be linked together.

Yes, tg, I am surprised that at least the finals are not being broadcast on ABC. IMVHO (since I don't skate), skating has been adversely affected by the increase in popularity, plethora of competitions, and emphasis on jumps (especially in Men's). The Wide World of Sports would have the complete competion, including figures (Trixie Schuba, anyone?), and all of the competitors, good and not-so-good. I loved every minute of it.
Hobmom and Lady Wendy, thanks for the screencaps.

Plus, according to Lij, he said he had dinner with Robert at one point to talk to him about making the movie himself, and found out that it was already being attempted.
Honey, perhaps they've put a prosthetic on him, like they did to Benicio and Mickey, to make him look more like the comic. Entirely possible, I suppose.

(Havent been on here for quite a while, so apologies to anyone whose birthday I missed.)
Thanks to Lady Wendy and Hobmom for the screen caps, and to BunnieBugs for the link to the AICN reviews of Hooligans. I didnt feel that the first reviewer actually disliked Elijahs performance. It seemed to be more that he thought Charlie H. overshadowed EJW, and that Matts character wasnt quite believable (not necessarily due to the acting, however).
Cant wait for Sin City! I know its going to be violent, and that Elijah may not be in it all that much. But the whole visual concept just looks so exciting (to me, anyway).
DK whether anyone already noted this, during my absence, but it gets my vote for Huh??? of the month: In the March issue of Total Film, there is a blurb about the movie version of The Chronicles of Narnia. It mentions that it will have shrewd lo-fi casting (e.g., Tilda Swinton), and then quotes someone named Mike Goodridge as saying, If you look at the [Lord of the] Rings cast when they went into that, they were absolutely run-of-the-mill.
Even apart from Elijah (about whom we are admittedly not necessarily the most objective group), could you really call the likes of Cate Blanchett, the two Ians, and others "run of the mill"??

Re: that double-chin on Kevin in Sin City--I read (I think over at Oscarwatch) that they did put some prosthetics on EW so that he would look even more like the drawn Kevin from the graphic novel. So, they added the doublechin, the claws, and I think something else (I can't remember what, though).

We won't know for sure, of course, for a couple more weeks (eeeeeeeeee! :D ), but I don't think it's prosthetics. I think it's just the intense physicality of the scene that's distorting his face. They wouldn't really need any prosthetics to make him look more like this:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v32/bunniebugs/misc/kevin.gif
...except for maybe the stubble. :p
I will admit that's it's possible that they blunted his nose a bit, but I don't think they did anything to his chin.

To me it looks like mega-prosthetics. From the eyebrows down: all you can recognise at all of our lad in that Kevin profile shot are the forehead and the left ear. He even seems to have rubber on his upper chin, below the lower lip, as well as under his chin. And definitely around and under his nose. If you hadn't told me, I'd never have known it was Lij. Maybe that's why there have been so few publicity shots of Kevin?
And if we've been reading him correctly, Elijah would just jump at the chance of some prosthetics - if only to have the experience of being ugly for once! He thought it extremely cool when he was briefly Gollumized for LOTR. Being as beautiful as he is must get sooo boring .... yawn .... :p
Which brings me to Hooligans. Feeling heartened by those AICN reviews - thanks, Bunnie! So much so that I'm going to risk quoting a little bit (real spoilers removed .... I hope!)
Review 1:
Can I pause right here to mention that this is not a football film. There is one brief football scene at the match mentioned above against Newcastle United, and another where ....... This movie is about respect, friendship, and maybe even honour.
Review 2:
The violence is shown as-is. The film doesn't apologise for it, but it doesn't glamorise it either, but shows it as honestly and as brutally as possible. The shaky hand-held camera that takes place during the fights brilliantly captures the chaos of the fighting. And these are fights with consequences. The younger lads are bruised throughout much of the film, the older firm members are permanently scarred ......
I'd say that even if you don't think you'd be interested in this film, the respect and reality that this culture is allowed makes for fascinating viewing, and I can't imagine anyone not getting sucked in at some point. Apart from the very end of the film, which seemed a little twee and contrasted the "actions have consequences" message that the rest of the film had, I'd say this has the potential to be a great little film and deserves to be seen ...... I implore you - seek it out!
Interesting. I don't like violence in films or anywhere else (in fact I'm more squeamish than most, usually having to look away if anything bloody or even painful happens on screen), but I do think it's worth exploring even topics like this in film if you can throw some light on a phenomenon that looks mindless on the surface but clearly involves some highly intelligent guys, many of whom have responsible jobs and families. It would be nice if the film left people with a better understanding of why the heck people feel moved to go around beating the crap out of each other every Saturday (didn't Wendy tell us a while back that she felt like beating up the opposition during the World Cup or something?).
Am relieved to hear that this movie does NOT seem to deal with the kind of unspeakable (racist) thugs who gratuitously smash up innocent bystanders and property, usually when England is playing abroad. That is, you might say, a different ball game.

But no smiling when you say it; you must manage it with an entirley straight face! :D :haha: Last year I bought my frist "fun" car after driving minii-vans for years. It will happen for you too!
I will admit that's it's possible that they blunted his nose a bit, but I don't think they did anything to his chin.
Kevin in the drawing has a much heavier jaw than Elijah does; his is quite delicate and boney. The double chin in the picture I posted doesn't look like Lij's to me. In fact, I keep having moments of doubt that it's him at all. If you all hadn't told me it was I wouldn't recognize him!
ETA: Looks like I'm simulposting with you Serena! So you say prosthetics too! :k ;)
And now for something completely different!
Why I think Elijah is a total genius! I was saying to Alyon the other day "what is it that makes fan-fic writers want to grind Elijah's movie characters into the mud?" They just love to batter him - mostly Frodo, but sometimes Casey - then strip him, then fricasee him, flaying isn't too good for him either. Anything that leaves him a quivering heap of steaming angst will do, and they load it on. If the villian in the piece can't hurt him enough, they have poor Frodo/Casey do some damage to himself. Well, I'm sick of it!
I know that Frodo had a steely determined side. And Casey? It's the delightful spectacle of seeing the class wimp remove the wads of tissue from his nose, and take charge that makes me watch "The Faculty" repeatedly. (OK, and he's purty too!)
I, for one, can't wait to see Kevlijah rip someone's throat out with his teeth...or claws, or whatever. I really look forward to watching Matt get tough and tattooed! Bring it on, I say!

Oh, I agree! This is what I thought when I saw that baggy chin! His nostril is the right shape and in the right place, but his nose is too thick to the upper lip. I'm coming down on the prosthetics side, based on Honeyelf's research. (I'm having such fun with this!) :p
I'm still sitting in the "total wimp" camp, so I rely on you, brave sisters of the Faculty, to scout Hooligans and Sin City for me. Let me know if a total wuss can sit in the theatre without covering her eyes. Otherwise, I'll have to wait for the DVD.
Honey, I do think Elijah would enjoy playing someone really tough. Casey was extremely tough, at least with aliens (if not his classmates). But he did have that beat-up side. And Mikey in CoF was the most adorable hit man on the planet-- or was he? Lovely ambiguity there. So it might be time for our little guy to kick some tail. Go for it, dude! :D

I'm sorry to disappoint you but -- VAGUE SIN CITY SPOILER -- I don't think that fanfiction authors have ever subjected their Elijesque characters to the kind of, eh, battering that eventually befalls Kevin.
I must say that following EJW's career puts quite a strain on someone like me. First, I had to re-read LotR. Now I find myself browsing gory comic books even though, as any over-educated European snob, I believe that they are part of a plot to make our children illiterate :p.

The April issue of Premiere magazine has an article on Sin City. No pictures of Elijah (so what else is new??), but it does contain the following paragraph:
I had read those books voraciously, and now here Frank Miller was, essentially adding shots, says Wood, who was such a fan that he jumped at playing serial sicko Kevin, a role with no dialogue. It was too much, man. My little geek mind could not contain it.
(Sounds just like him, doesnt it?)
The article also talks about the prosthetics used on Nick Stahl (Yellow Bastard), and comments that he "is one of several actors who spent quality time in the makeup chair in pursuit of the Miller aesthetic." The others are not identified. Maybe EJW is one of them?

ETA: D'OH! Sorry about double post.
And if we've been reading him correctly, Elijah would just jump at the chance of some prosthetics After 18 months of big hairy feet, I suspect any of the hobbits would run screaming from the room on hearing the word "prosthetics".
Being as beautiful as he is must get sooo boring .... yawn .... :p The thing is, he can look downright unattractive sometimes, depending on his expression and the way he holds himself. After extensive study of the Kevin profile, I think it's all him. His chin is pulled way back into his neck, which would give him a double chin. His face is extremely scrunched up, which would blunt his nose. The way his septum meets his upper lip is classic Elijah profile. Considering the monster that we saw putting on the Ring at the CoD, I'm betting that he needs prosthetics as much as - um - John Barrymore? needed them when he played Mr. Hyde. I can't believe that they would miss the opportunity of the contrast between angelic beauty and evil.
Re Casey as a wimp: Nah. He was a little guy, but his response to the unbearable tormenting was to run away, which was the intelligent thing to do. You notice how many guys took part in the flagpole incident - had there been one or two he would have simply avoided them. He was up against way too many tough brainless wonders at the moment. He then also responded in an intelligent way - hiding his distress in a bathroom stall before facing the world with a bland untroubled exterior. His ultimate victory was also brains over brawn - the big guy was unconscious on the floor while the "wimp" assessed the comparative size of wimp and monster, and led the monster on a merry chase through a place where he knew she couldn't go.
I think that the ultimate portrayal of Casey's strength was at the end. After becoming the hero, he didn't use the opportunity to become cool, or emulate his tormenters. He went back to exactly who he was and things that he liked to do - like photographing flowers before they got brutally trampled by all that coolness.
I'll never understand why guys of slight physical appearance who survive bullying and the level of tormenting that Casey did are considered wimps. They just cope in a different way.
(Do I win a prize for the most occurences of "monster" in one post?)(I think I should go back to bed now)

The thing is, he can look downright unattractive sometimes, depending on his expression and the way he holds himself.
I am glad I am not alone in thinking this. Although I have seem some stunning pictures of him, with some photos that are posted, which other fans are swooning over, I find myself asking the question 'why exactly do I like this guy'. I also think that modelling wise he is becomming less visually attractive as he develops his true adult features. This doesn't matter though, because it is how he uses those features (conciously or unconciously) that makes him attractive.
Am drawn here to lustful thoughts of Patrick Swayze ;)
I think there is plenty of scope for Elijah to portray ugly if he so wants to, and at least it means that he won't be pigeonholed into the kind of pretty boy roles that Tom Cruise got stuck with in his 20s. I also thought that one of the problems with the film Troy was that it is hard to see Brad Pitt as some kind of super fighter in Troy when he only seems to be able to portray charming and cheeky with his expressions.

Re Casey as a wimp:
Seeing that this thread is again topping 900 posts, I decided to do a bit of preparation and stuck The Faculty into the DVD player last night to get some appropriate pics. Took the opportunity to re-watch the movie and take, oh, about 600 screencaps. Like almost all of Elijah's characters, Casey becomes a lot more interesting when you slow things down enough to really pay attention to him. He has some very brave/courageous/heroic moments that I hadn't really noticed before. (And one of the best lines in the movie, that had gone completely past me til now: "I'd rather be afraid." -- in response to the alien's offer of a future without fear or pain.)
One important research point: I think I caught a moment of jaw-setting, which, if true, would be the first non-Frodo instance of that particular expression reported. And continuing with the discussion of how Elijah can put on a "different face" for each character, IMHO Casey is another character (in addition to Frodo and Mikey C.) where a lot of that involves the way he holds his mouth. I don't know exactly what he's doing, but whatever it is seems to "erase" that little raised/curled lip on the one side. -- BTW, going back a ways in the thread -- I'd read the Ice Storm interview with Elijah before, but hadn't seen the quote from Ang Lee about the way Mikey talks. But from the first time I saw the movie, I'd thought, "He's doing something different with his voice." I wasn't able to define what it was, though.
I have to do a retraction of something I said in my comments about The Faculty on my website--that Elijah wasn't doing all his own stunts. That review was written, of course, before I knew anything about DVDs, much less stop-action, frame-by-frame, or screencaps. I'd seen it only on video. Last night I went frame-by-frame through the scene where I'd been convinced that it wasn't Elijah--and it is (the one on top of the school bus). There's also a lot of great sliding, falling, and getting back up that I hadn't been tuned into in "the old days" predating the Fabulous Falls of Frodo.
I don't understand. First, wasn't Hitler a lot shorter? Second, Elijonathan looks like he's dressed in pure 70's garb down to the white shoes and velvet bow tie.
IIRC, the director did talk about "fantasy sequences," saying that they were Alex's fantasies (again, IIRC). So maybe that's what Alex thinks Hitler and an American Jew should look like? Should be interesting, though. :)
Cute website for EII--definitely geared toward those who've read the book, who are probably the only people interested in the movie at this point (except for EJW fans who are avoiding reading the book til after they see the movie). Not dial-up friendly, though. An entire site in Flash is pure aggravation; search engines don't "like" them, either, so the folks putting the site together must not be too worried about attracting visitors. The only page I finally pried open was the one on Heritage Tours. They seem to be keeping Sammy Davis Junior, Junior under wraps, since Alex says the bitch in the picture is not the Heritage Tours mascot but "a bitch I found online." :D My usual solution for viewing long downloads--sneaking a peak at them on the office computer--won't work for this one, because the computers there aren't even Flash enabled.
Speaking of keeping things under wraps: There's a "making of the movie" book coming out for Sin City, but it's not released yet. With the movie opening so soon, I'm suspecting the book won't be available til the movie is.

I just read an exerpt from a Peter Jackson talk, courtesy of Samaranth on LJ. She wrote the following about Miramax's brilliant idea to make LOTR one 3-hour film. I hope she doesn't mind me quoting her:
it essentially had the name Lord of the Rings, and not much more than that. For example, the whole Moria sequence was gone, the idea being that theyd pick the story up on the other side and Frodo would say Well, damn, werent those caves/orcs something. Pity about Gandalf. Applying the Tell not Show principle, obviously. Gondor and Rohan were to be collapsed into one country, ruled over by a synthesis of Theoden and Denethor. The mind just boggles.
It cant be done! PJ and Fran said, You will alienate everyone who has ever read the book!, they said. Oh yes it can, he said. Weinstein had already lined up a scriptwriter, and a director to take over the project if PJ decided to bail. PJ and Fran said they had to think about it, and flew back to NZ. They went away for the weekend (it was Frans birthday) and discussed it as they were walking along the beach, and decided to opt out of the likely debacle. So they rang their agent and told him to contact Miramax, and call it off. However, their agent pointed out to Miramax that this was a project that PJ had brought to them, not vice versa, and that PJ should have the opportunity to pitch the project elsewhere before Miramax took over. They agreed, PJs agent contacted him to say they had 4 weeks starting that second, so that was the end of the weekend.
And some of us thought some of the characters were a little skewed (points at self). I am right now falling all over with waves of humility gushing through me. THANK YOU, PJ and FRAN!

Quint has posted a new review of Hooligans at AICN, to tide us over until he posts his own. But he says I saw HOOLIGANS myself a few hours ago and it is everything this review says and more. It's a damn good flick that everyone I know enjoyed.
Another interview has popped up on IMDB, and the reviewer there says in part:
Casting Elijah Wood is a bold move, he looks like a Choirboy but this adds to the films main storyline of innocence corrupted. The acting is better than average, despite letting his cockney accent slip on occasions, Gang leader Charlie Hunnam shows a genuine mix of anger, aggression and compassion which holds the film together.
 "cockney accent?" Why would Matt have a cockney accent? Well, anyway, I'm glad he thought Lij's casting was a bold move that worked.

I'm glad to hear that Quint liked it! That's promising. :)

And thanks so much, everybody, for all the links to trailers, articles et al. I really indulge myself in it. And the Sin City trailers allayed my initial doubts - wow, does that film look promising  Woohoo!

Here's some more from Quint at AICN, edited for your comfort, of course!
Elijah Wood has been picking some great post LOTR material. He's not going for the big Rom Com or the Universal wet f*t gag and *-drinking comedy. He's gone for smaller roles in great scripts (ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND), the total geeked-out stylized flicks (SIN CITY) and taking his time to plan a lead role in an indie flick about soccer hooligans.
Wood found a great bridging character between Frodo and whatever he's going on to in the future. As an American falling into the rough and tumble world off football gangs, Wood has the perfect innocence at the beginning and makes a great transition to a more world worn, rounded person... that likes to punch out those bastards that don't like West Ham.
The beginning of the film is a tad slow, but once Wood gets introduced to Charlie Hunnam (Nicholas Nickleby himself), the head of a particular football gang, the film takes off. It's really the budding friendship between Elijah and Charlie that makes this movie for me. I'm a sucker for a good buddy flick and this definitely is a good buddy flick.
Happy Birthday, Mariole! There's a guy here, looking to deliver a special birthday message to you...

Hello Colleagues!
Playing hookey from the RL project from Mordor that's been keeping me so occupied to say:
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MARIOLE!
Wishing you all sorts of good things for your b-day!
Whiteling, I must say that is a disturbing picture!
Did anyone else catch Saturday Night Live last night? Not that it was much to write home about, but there were two things that were memorable. First was the Sin City Trailer that ran during the adverts! :) Though they cut "Kevin's" brief appearance. :(
Second, during one skit, David Spade (the host  ) played an actor in an action film (opposite the excellent Horatio Sanz as Vin Diesel) who has to step out of the scene so his stunt double can step in. The stunt double was a girl (Amy Poehler) dressed up to look like him. The point was that Spade was short and slight and a girl could do a better job at the stunts than he (yeah, so much for enlightened gender awareness. Thanks Tina Fey!). So why am I telling you this? The skit ends with Spade hitting on Poehler, and she says, "I'm going to tell you exactly what I told Elijah Wood--yes!"
Make of that what you will! That's the only line I remember from the entire freakin' show!
Back to work....
THANK YOU ACHILA FOR THAT REWIEW!!!!!!
YOU JUST MADE MY DAY SO SUNNY!!!!!!! :k :k :k :k

 "cockney accent?" Why would Matt have a cockney accent? Because the person who wrote the review succumbed to the "Eats, Shoots, and Leaves" school of sentence construction. "His cockney accent" refers to Hunnam's accent, not Elijah's.
:::: sigh :::: Gotta go be Martha Stewart for a while.

Good to see some positive reviews of Hooligans. :) Honey - I saw that review at IMDb too. I agree with Bunnie and Grumpy - I'm sure the reviewer was referring to Charlie Hunnam's cockney accent.
Tg. I also re-watched The Faculty last night! As well putting on a slightly different face for each character, Elijah uses body language to great effect as Casey, I think. I love the scene on the football field with the coach - at the end of the scene Casey kind of jumps as the coach shouts at him, turns and scurries away - wonderful characterization. Wasn't this the scene they were shooting the very day that Harry Knowles told Elijah about LOTR, and said he should audition for Frodo? :)
The skit ends with Spade hitting on Poehler, and she says, "I'm going to tell you exactly what I told Elijah Wood--yes!"
Whatever can she mean, peaceweaver? :)

Make of that what you will! That's the only line I remember from the entire freakin' show!
What I'll happily make of it is that they evidently expected the typical SNL viewer to have some idea of who Elijah Wood is  , which wouldn't have been true a few years ago. Even better if the line got a good laugh from the audience--if they sat there in stony silence, not getting the joke, it wouldn't be a good sign...
Blossom--"Scurries" is a great word for that cute little run :p . He runs differently later on in the movie when he really is being chased--but I figure in that earlier scene he's trying to protect his camera (or his drink box  ). -- That could very well be the scene that was being shot the day Harry brought up the Frodo role, but I'd have to look back into the "archives" to find out for sure. Harry has a nice bit about how much Robert Rodriguez has influenced him, in his report on the Texas Film Hall of Fame write-up at AICN, and I kind of have the feeling Harry was hanging around the set for more time than it took to shoot his two cameos. BTW, this is an example of why I don't generally follow links when I'm short of time--I spent quite a bit of time at AICN after I got there  .
Since my birthday greetings usually come out of whatever movie it is I'm concentrating on at the time, just for Mariole's birthday here are some sternocl...whatsis shots from The Faculty :p .

Er, I thought at first you meant "mole" as some derivation of "Mariole" :o - Mariole the rodent, that's me! :p
Achila, I see your Elijah pic is labeled "Exhibits only." I disagree. There is no "only" associated with what this young man exhibits. *sighs*
"I'm going to tell you exactly what I told Elijah Wood--yes!"
*falls down laughing* Lovely! Thanks for sharing that.
Thank you for the beautiful collage, Blossom! I'll go to the Harem next, to see what gif(t)s await me. :k
Tg, thank you for my Casey shots! While #2 does show a breathtaking extension of the sternocleidomastoid, #3 is just amazingly beautiful. How fortunate for us that such a lovely person dewlls inside that stunning exterior! :)
(Casey's "scurry" truly cracks me up. He looks so intimidated! Lovely character portrayal.)
OT: The funniest thing about my physical therapy? I have a special exercise where I have to massage my sternocleidomastoid. Seriously! Of course, I can never do it without imagining a certain actor... :p
And now, if you'll excuse me, I think I'll begin tearing off the wrapping that a trained team put all over Bunnie's gift to me.

Hi, Lin, fellow lurker! My 2 rubles, the book and the film probably won't have much to do with each other - reading after seeing would be a better course, if you are so moved. We've heard that the movie was actually inspired by a magazine article/excerpt that appeared in the New Yorker, not the complete novel. But as I'm one of the very few people around who did not like the book, I now wish I had not read it already, and that I could see the movie without any preconceptions. YMMV.
I will gladly go to see it, tho, just because EJW is in it, and endure the usual 'so that's why you wanted to see this movie' from my husband. ;)

I would actually suggest reading the book first. If the film does as we are led to believe and concentrates on the journey the three main characters take in the car, the film will be very 'normal' and enjoyable, and then you will find probably find the book even stranger afterwards. The chapters keep flicking between three distinct stories, and when I read the book, I thoroughly enjoyed the parts narrated by Alex, but really didn't get some other parts of it at all and found myself not wanting to be where the book took me. I intend to read it again to see if it becomes easier second time around.

..new EII web site and seemingly Elijahs skill in landing this role. I actually read the book on tape first, while driving my car (not a good idea -----too absorbing and distracting for driving). I loved it so much I then bought the book and read it. It is a quite different read on paper but excellent as well. It does not seem possible to make this into a movie..so will be very interesting to see how Liev Schreiber does with the script. Anticipation growing by the day!

It does not seem possible to make this into a movie..so will be very interesting to see how Liev Schreiber does with the script. Anticipation growing by the day! As you may know, saile, Liev based his treatment on an excerpt of the book that was published in New Yorker magazine, so it may be quite different. My understanding is that the excerpt did not contain the fantasy elements of the book so perhaps that made it a little easier to adapt.

I've only read the Sin City that features Kevin, and it's hard to tell from the track titles, but the only one that stands out to me is #5, Bury the Hatchet (although it seems too early in the track listing to be associated with Kevin.) Others are possibilities (Warrior Woman, Kiss of Death), but I'd have to read the two other books that are covered in the movie to more accurately guess.
My son wants to see this one, so we'll be heading off to the theatre soon after it's released, and I'll be providing a report soon after. They're going to have to tone down the violence from the book to avoid an NC-17 rating, though - hardened as I am, I still had a nightmare the night I finished reading it. That won't stop me from seeing the movie! :D
Achila, thanks for the info on Sin City on ET. I don't watch it regularly, but I'll try to catch it this week.

HAPPY (BELATED) BIRTHDAY, DEAREST RODEN
ER, I MEAN MARIOLE !!!
And abject apologies for (a) missing your birthday (hope it was frabjous) and (b) failing to post even one pic of the wondrous Mr W for your delectation. Both of these omissions are the direct responsibility of a certain local cable company that shall remain NAMELESS, since I hate the thought of giving them any publicity whatsoever after they have left my home an Internet-free zone for NEARLY FOUR WEEKS now. Needless to say, I am changing my service provider. That requires some research into the relative reliabilities of various companies. Meanwhile, thank
the central energy source, or something
. for my employer, who keeps me in touch with you guys!
For I have some news. Yesterday I met the delightful Mr Billeh Boyd in a local café/bookshop and chatted to him for at least 5 minutes, would you believe? :) No? Well, its all true, for once. :p One of the main avenues in this city had been sealed off for more filming of Save Angel Hope (a car sideways across the road, temporarily in front of a green screen), and my friend and I wandered along to take a look. There was a bitterly cold wind blowing, so when a small group of actors disappeared into the café we felt we needed some hot coffee too know what I mean? Well, there we were standing in the queue right behind a certain young man wearing a tweed jacket, jeans and sneakers. His hair was longish on top and he had long sideburns, so was not instantly recognisable as a Scottish hobbit unless you were expecting him hence the fact that most people in the café didnt register him at all. Amazing.
Anyhow, Billy and co ordered their food and sat down while we stayed near the counter to order ours. When Billy came back from the mens room he had to walk right past us at the counter and he caught my eye and smiled. So I told him that Id loved his song in ROTK, and we talked for a bit about Tolkiens words and Billys music etc., and about the current film. I then asked if Dom and Elijah were coming over to visit him this time (as theyd visited him in Mexico during Master and Commander) and Billy said no, Dom was busy and Elijah had just bought a house (in Venice Beach? yes) and he hadnt seen Lij since New Year. So I commented that New Year seemed to be a tradition, and he said yes, theyd booked next year already! I said OK, I wouldnt ask where, and Billy said he didnt even know yet.
And then my friend (who, incidentally, writes novels and screenplays and has very interesting views on our Lij which I'll divulge to anyone who asks) asked Billy who his agent is - he told her - and then  invited him to a performance art thing we are doing at a local art gallery this weekend, in which I'm performing a couple of her pieces based on artworks, and Billy said he would    I was aghast Id never have had the nerve to invite any of the hobbits to anything, least of all something involving me! Billy, being the sweet guy he clearly is, may actually come along. So if you never hear from me again, it'll be because I've died of embarrassment. :o Or something.
But meanwhile we have both signed on to be extras in a couple of overnight shoots of a gala event which is part of the movie, starting tomorrow
. 6 pm to 6 am. Have had to take leave from work to do this crazy thing, needless to say. But if I can manage to engage Mr Boyds attention just by chance, e.g. by lassooing him, Ill try to ask him more about his and Lijs upcoming projects. If any.
BTW, I can't tell you how charming and friendly Billy was. When he was talking to us his face seemed to light up the way it does in the DVD extras when he's talking about things he enjoyed. It was amazing to see that close up, and to be looking straight into his eyes (which seem to be blue-green). He's most definitely top of my hero list right now.
OK.. While on the topic of Lij's upcoming projects:

Well, we did discuss Lij in the highly appropriate roles of BenVOLio or even MalVOLio a while back. Vampire bats a distinct possibility too after some of the Hooligans pics. But lemurs? Another theory my friend here holds is that Middle Earth is in fact Lemuria (close to New Zealand, by all accounts) and that Tolkien was tuning into those actual events of the incredibly distant past when he wrote LOTR. Well, we have discussed LOTR as history (and archaelogy) rather than fiction. That's the way the cast experienced it too. So maybe it was. Just maybe.
Did you know the lemurs in Madagascar greet the sun with outstretched arms each morning? OK, there are those who say they are regulating their body temperature, but some of us know better. ;)

Over at TORc, reports have been coming in by those present at Peter Jackson's question-and-answer session in Australia.
I am linking page 5, of the Frodo/Elijah thread (there are no post numbers there; sorry):

1. Scroll down to Maewyn's (K-D's "Kumari") March 13 post; there is a link -- An Evening With Peter Jackson -- which leads to a thread with some very good reports (by Samaranth and others).
2. Then scroll down to the big March 14 post of Chickenlegs; she has written a fantastic report, full of wit with lots of detail about the event, especially the humorous out-takes on a DVD Pete showed those assembled. You won't want to miss this report.
Just sayin'. :)

Popping in to let you know that Elijah and Charlie Hunnam were interviewed on a morning news program in Austin about the SXSW festival, and you can read an article and watch the interview (link is about half-way down, "A Word from Wood") here (http://www.news8austin.com/content/your_news/default.asp?ArID=133089&addvid=28609).

BTW, I can't tell you how charming and friendly Billy was. When he was talking to us his face seemed to light up the way it does in the DVD extras when he's talking about things he enjoyed. It was amazing to see that close up, and to be looking straight into his eyes (which seem to be blue-green).
Ah- yes! Amazing that you should say that! I met Billy in October last year, and my strongest impression of him was exactly that, how his face would light up like a lamp, literally filling the room with its light. The best thing about that is that it would light up for me and my friend (who happens to be an exceptionally wonderful person) and it just makes you feel great! :p

That's kind of wonderful. Nerve-wracking for you, wonderful for us. :p
Oh, and I'd also be interested to hear your friend's views. :D
FYI; samaranth posts here as estella rose, if anyone else remembers her. :)

And indeed that is true. (Don't ask how I ended up with two online names, it's a long, long, long story. )
Hi Mechtild, we seem to be frequenting the same haunts lately :)

Serena! *bounce, bounce* yay, you chatted with Billeh - and what an exciting prospect - being an extra and performing in front of Billy Boyd. But relax, it could be worse. Just imagine Elijah Wood sitting amongst your audience, looking at you with his big... blue... eyes  :p .
Bunnie, thank you for the link to the SXSW festival. :) Standing ovations at the end! And isn't Elijah the sweetest man, begging for "some distribution" for Hooligans in the States? :k
Mechtild, :k , thanks so much for the link to the hysterical reports! Oh my, how I wish to see Elijah dangling in Shelob's web, looking all silly and giggling :D
(BTW, your art photomanips are slaying me. Great, great job!)
Hi, Estella rose :) ! Wonderful report, thank you!

 Serena! coolness! And I too, would love to hear your friend's opinions regarding the One Lad.
Bunnie, thanks for the link to that vidoe interview of Elijah and Charlie. It's interesting to hear them both talk about the violent fight scenes, how they "forgot" about fillming them, and how they felt secondary to the story for them. Either they both suffered minor concussions, ;) or they're attempting damage control after that less than glorious trailer. And good for Lij for speaking up and asking for someone to distribute this film!
Oh, another very positive review by "Maria von Trapp" :D has popped up over at AICN. She praises the whole cast as being top-notch,' but doesn't single anyone out.

from AICN:
Hi Harry,
One of the people representing Hooligans asked that, if we liked the movie, to write in to AICN. I know I am not one of your official reviewers, but I don't think this movie is getting nearly the coverage it ought to get, so, after seeing this movie 2 times now, I am going to write a quick review because Liesl and I agree, this movie is awesome. You can use this review or not, but there is only one showing of Hooligans left at SXSW.
HOOLIGANS
Like Ong Bak, this movie is not about gangs or violence or even "football"...it is about finding what is missing from life and the journey of the protagonist to find it.
Matt Buckner just walks away from his future and his own talent in the beginning of this movie. We are given the superficial reason, but we cannot help but feel immediately that he gives up "without a fight" he just resigns himself to it and then "runs away". It seems maddening that he does this, but at the same time, so many of us do the same thing in small ways everyday that we relate. Essentially this is the set-up for his personal transformation.
He gets drawn into the completely foreign world of football firms or gangs. His naivety leads the way, because he really doesn't know how deep and dark this world is, even though we, the audience, are given a glimpse of it at the beginning of the movie. For the first time, Matt gets a taste of loyalty and friendship that seem to expand his world to a sense of belonging which has been missing from his privileged but solitary academic life. But he is still naive. As Americans in the same unfamiliar world of the football firms, we go right along with him because of the down to earth appeal of being a "regular" guy, and the treat of seeing a real West Ham United match with real fans complete with all the frenzy and excitement. But we are also drawn by the charm of Pete, the head of the West Ham United firm, who happens to be Matt's sister's brother-in-law. Pete is played brilliantly by actor Charlie Hunnam.
The violence of the brawls that ensue to protect the reputation of the firms and the teams they "represent" is handled extremely well in this film. Bloody, "gritty" and adrenaline-pumping bare fist fights without weapons where wit, nerve and fighting ability are all the tools the firms use to maintain their reputation. Occasional sticks, stones and broken beer bottles find their way into the fights and when they do, they are usually used as an indication of dirty fighting or survival. The movie in no-way glorifies violence or even justifies it. The fights just become an important part of the story and the transformation of Matt.
I will not say more of about this movie because people just need to see it themselves and I don't like too summarize a movie as much as I like to share my feelings about it.
Elijah Wood, Charlie Hunnam, and the rest of the cast are all top-notch. Hooligans has been one of the highlights of SXSW this year for me. I hope that everyone who wants to see this film gets a chance and I would love to see an American general release of the movie. Best of luck to Lexi Alexander.

Thanks for the SXSW link Bunnie. I am looking forward to Hooligans even more now. Charlie Hunman played such a nasty piece of work in Cold Mountain, that I wasn't pre-disposed to liking him in real life, and I was also starting to dislike him for what I was hearing in reviews about Hooligans. Yet he seems quite a cutie from that interview and pleasant with it. So I have two reasons to go watch the film now.
I do so hope Peter Jackson issues that LOTR blooper reel to the public one day.

I wanted to drop off this tidbit, since it was something that we were debating: we now have it from Elijah himself (someone spoke to him at SXSW) that there was no stunt double or prosthetics used (outside of the fingernails) for those shots we've seen in the Sin City trailer.
I hope all that good press over at AICN is noticed by someone in charge and that Hooligans does, indeed, get a distributor. It would really be a crime for it to be overlooked! "Let's get some distribution, please?" ;)

Thanks for the reviews and links, everyone! Mechtild, Chickenleg's report was a fabulous addition!

The best thing about that is that it would light up for me and my friend (who happens to be an exceptionally wonderful person) and it just makes you feel great! :p I've often wondered what it was about these guys that made the casting director, and whatever remote corner of PJ's remarkable mind handles this kind of thing, that made them say "That's it. Stop looking" when it came to the hobbits. We know more about what went into his choice of Elijah, and we know Elijah's effect on those who meet him, but I wonder if, with Dominic and Billeh, if this is precisely what he saw. In an ep. of Lost, when Charlie and Jack were in that cave, Charlie smiled at one point, and it was like a light went on in the cave. They (Billeh and Dom) both have that quality of lighting up a room like that.
~grumpy (poor 'Lij. Having to beg for a distributor. I guess I'd better read the rest of the posts before I stick my foot farther down my throat)(Re: Sin City trailer and prosthetics: Neener neener neeeeee-ner!)

Yer Kidding! ::Joins Mariole in Detention:: Wow! OK, now I'm getting really excited about this film! (I told my husband about the prosthetics/no prosthetics debate and reasearch. His response: "You guys are such geeks!" :D )
I say Ash Wednesday for the second time last night. (<3 Netflix!) I liked it better this time around, actually. Sean seems strangely casual about coming "back from the dead," when everyone around him is spurred into action. But on thinking about it, I suppose his life would be rather devoid of meaning without those he loved around him. Being lonely enough to come back, and try to reclaim a little bit of his old life would also mean he had nothing to loose, and would risk death; I suppose that could engender a casual seeming attitude. But then he's also risking the lives of everyone who helped him escape the first time, and being awful casual about that. I was also resigned to how little EJW content there is in the film, I got to enjoy the cinematography, and I really liked the visual style of the film. Conclusion: I might not pass it up again if I find it in a bargain bin somewhere.

I say Ash Wednesday for the second time last night. (<3 Netflix!) I liked it better this time around, actually. That's funny -- so did I. One of the cable channels had it on and I decided to watch it. And to tell the truth, I liked it a little better this time around too. Elijah still doesn't sound like he's from the same neighborhood, let alone the same planet as Ed Burns, but I did detect a very subtle "New York" thing going on with some of the words that I hadn't noticed before, that made it just a touch more believable. The repetitive, moody theme music still annoyed me though. Can't win em all.

Oooh...I'm getting all itchy and twitchy about all of this Hooligans/Sin city reporting.
I read some excerpt from MsAllegro's review of Hooligans. She didn't love it..one thing she said: she thought you could still hear some of Frodo accent in Elijah's speech. She did say that when Lexi introduced the film she said that Elijah was perfect for the part....so we might be able to forgive her a little!!!! ;)
Wood, I sat through ET last night and they did not mention Elijah, even though they listed actors who "rounded out the cast." Last night focused on Bruce Willis and Jessica Alba.
Achila re Sin City:
And btw, the premiere will be in Hollywood on March 28.
It happens that I am going to BE in Hollywood on the day!!! YES!! Maybe I can at least see some of the milling around the red carpet. Do you know what theater??
Serena--you kill me!! You are going to perform for Billy. Knock me dead. I like how you meet hobbits in cafes and hotels. And then TALK to them. Very good :) :) :)
