Ditto. For a while, his pic was on the Ringers website, but I couldn't find it when I looked yesterday.

Bunnie, didn't I already see a pic of you screaming in the TORn mob? I'm fairly sure I did. Some documentary panned over the crowd, and there you were. Is it not so? Am I dreaming?
Psst! Honey and Alyon! My advice is, at the end of the 15 seconds, pretend to trip! Your choice about the angle at which you choose to fall. Good luck! :p

I don't think I'm in any footage (though I could be wrong), but they did get a couple of stills of me from during the Oscar telecast. And, yes, I was screaming in one of them.
I think I'm going to use my 15 seconds to just take a good look at him. You know -- for research purposes. ;) I had planned to give him something, but it didn't work out. :( Maybe I can come up with a few, concise words to say later, at the autograph signing, but it sounds like those are going to move pretty quickly, as well. *sigh* But, just getting to tell him 'thank you' in person is such a gift (for me)!

...by the end of the afternoon, the security guards are wondering why Elijah Wood has so many clumsy fans :D .
IMVHO, Frodo the iguana looks more like the Rankin-Bass version of Gollum (at least the version in The Hobbit--can't remember what he looks like in RotK--my mind must be blocking painful memories :haha: .)
I Believe You've Definitely Come Up With A Solution To The One Lad's Addiction
...I reckon the only way that Elijah will be persuaded to stop smoking will be when something gives him enough motivation to stop ! In other words, it would have to be something that he wants SOOOO badly, that he would stop tomorrow if he thought it would make it happen...
This really brought back some memories. Many years ago when I was 30 I was dating a very attractive young man who didn't smoke and hated the fact that I did....his solution was instead of breaking things off with me he just kept my lips busy with his lips. If you're kissing constantly there is no time or need to smoke
A far better way to satisfy an oral fixation :k
So what did I do?...I went and married a fellow smoker
Go figure ;)
Now if hubby had spent more time kissing and less time smoking
Maybe he wouldn't have had that heart attack :(

The final touches on the book are going in tonight. And I'm so tired I can barely think. Not sure if that's success, or disaster looming on the horizon.
C4, when I can think I'll let you know what we're doing on Saturday. I mean it; I'm zombified.
Grumpy, remember you so sweetly agreed let us put your "Lijah the Tatooed Hobbit" song in the book? And remember you made me promise that it had to be delivered with Groucho glasses? Well, what do you think of these? :D http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v377/honeyelf/glassescopy.jpg

Well, I finally got to watch my RotK EE DVD. The movie, ran through the cast commentary too, and all the extra features on the two discs. I'm probably the last one here to get to the DVD, but now it's done, and I'm happy. :) Just another three commentaries to sit through, that's all. :D
Very, very belated New Year 2005 wishes to everyone as I very slowly catch up with you all. :)
((wood)) my belated condolences to you on your grandmother's passing. :k
Happy Belated Birthday wishes to Ereshkigal! :k
And I hope everyone's well!
Thank you, Honey, for all the hard work you've been doing on the book! :k :k Ain't fair that you and Alyon are only getting 15 seconds, but hey, that's still 15 seconds more than the rest of us get so I don't know if I should continue to feel sorry or if I should get on a streak of green jealousy already. :D

Hullo, Ainon! Good to see you!
Ladies, your first look at the book!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v377/honeyelf/DSC00611.jpg
I don't know why I latched onto grey as the color of choice. It really doesn't show well in photographs, but I didn't think of that. The cover is silk, the spine ultrasuede (synthetic, so no critters were harmed!), and the binding velvet ribbon. I wanted it to be a subtle mix of textures, to invite closer inspection. And to look a little elvish.
OK, so outside it's not much to look at, but inside it's a little jewel box of treasures, thanks to all of you who participated. Here's a peak:

Considering that the Rankin/Bass cartoon of The Hobbit was my portal into the world of Tolkien, and that that was Gollum for me for years, I thank you, tg -- that's actually a compliment (and he was drawn the same in their comparatively hideous version of ROTK). In fact, my biggest complaint about the Bakshi film (which came out around that same time) was that Gollum wasn't froggy enough, like he had been in the cartoons.
I do know someone with an iguana named Gollum but unfortunately (and you're not gonna believe this), but he bit part of her finger off (no kidding). In my mind, I thought to myself, "Told you not to name him that!"

Hi everyone!
Just wanted to say, talking of dreams
I had a dream that Ashton Kucher had got the Ian Curtis part! Eek!
Ive been doing a bit of googling, and nothing much has turned up, except that the majority of people seem to think that EW as Curtis would be a good thing.
I saw Chain of Fools the other night, thanks to Sky Movies (Im sure someone working on the channel is an Elijah fan, they keep on showing his flicks) and was v. pleased with it. Loved the bit with the chair and the bum-fluff and the bit about Cats.
The book youre giving to EW looks great, Id love to see more of it. I didnt contribute anything cause I would be merely adding to what youve already said I hope he appreciates it, though.
And just an OT quickie:
Mariole sayeth:
I skipped that "Tolkien expert" article when I realized it was simply (IMHO) some yahoo trying to look smart and being harsh. I guess I just don't get this type of (to me) pseudo-academic writing, where someone tries to sound scholarly by making obvious comparisons between one thing and another, which are perfectly apparent to the layman.
I just wanted to say, I completely agree. Its a bad habit of certain parts of fandom to try to sound authoritative by appropriating lots of the surface requirements of academia without the scholarly rigour. That article is a perfectly good opinion piece and well researched, but its not an academic paper.
The Facultys Facial Expression Studies, on the other hand, are extremely scholarly. :)

I leave for LA this morning. I'm driving down with a friend. This whole adventure began because I was going to a quilt show with her which just happened to be "in the neighborhood." So "drive by posting" as it were.
The book is approximatley 9x12. The block of text on each page is 6.5" square. That glimpse of marbled paper you go in the above post is the endpaper and flyleaf. Here are a few more pics, only a few mind.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v377/honeyelf/DSC00619.jpg
That's Kumari's work, "Reflection."
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v377/honeyelf/DSC00620.jpg
That one is Whitelings piece entitled "The Ring is Mine."
See what I mean by a "little jewel box?" There is other artwork too, but that is all that made it into my photobucket account this morning at 1:45am! You'll have to wait for the rest until I get back from my adventure!
Regarding the gift giving. The ORC people have always been perfectly honest in stating that the celebrities usually don't take the gifst they recieve, nor do they ask to have them forwarded :( Well, I suppose that only makes sense, or soon they'd be hip-deep in teddy bears and the like!
Originally we werent' to be allowed to hand Elijah anything. Now it will pass through the hands of an assistant who will examine it closely for security reasons. Given what happened at Karlovy Vary, I needn't explain furnther.
Then, if it passes inspection, we'll get it back and be able to hand it to Elijah.
I've timed it, and I ought to be able to croak out "This is for you, Elijah. It was a group effort." If I can remember where my tongue is located, that is! :z:
I keep remembering reading about how his mother would turn away any gifts which singled him out from the other actors on a set. The boy was raised right, as we've all said before. And realistically I know that if he shows more than democratic interest in anything anyone gives him it just wouldn't be like him. So for all practical intents and purposes I might as well be handing him a bag of peanut butter cups. So I'm keeping my expectations very low.
:p yeah, right!
Alyon and I can only be there for the Friday night party, all day Saturday, and the Saturday night party. So we won't get to take in much. I wish that we could have seen the snippets of "Ringers" that they'll be showing, and sadly we will miss seeing Dommie, too, unless he is at the Friday night Shindig.
I don't know about Alyon, but I really want to see the art exhibits especially the Donato Giancola exhibit. He has this one piece, of Frodo and Sam on the slopes of Mnt. Doom that I've been wanting to see up close for ages.
And you can bet we'll be in the auditorium to see the One Lad and Seanwise! :) I'm trying to decided; do I do right by the Faculty and take notes, or just enjoy?
Also Billy, though somehow it seems wrong for a hobbit to be all by himself :(
Anyway, we'll be sure to report in if anything really exciting happens. Achila and Flourish, I still have your numbers programmed into my cel. It there is breaking news, (like about the Ian Curtis role, or maybe about our little book) I'll be sure and let one of you know!
Wood, batten down the hatches! Lay in a supply of hot chocolate. :k An hobbits! ;)
Hugs to all of you,
honey!

Thank you all for your good wishes and very clever and appealing advice. Believe me, the falling idea has been well considered, as has one with one of us playing blind and leading the other (one needs to touch to "see). If we went in for disguises we might have the nerve to unleash all sort of other plans...only in disguise can tap into such bravado!!
I honestly don't expect to have much exchange. Everything will have been said to him a million times by the time we see him. I want to manage a warm smile--and do as Bunny says...LOOK. I have to remember to look. Sometimes my mind gets on a lag in such situations and by the time I am alert it will all be over.
But thank you all for your kind thoughts. And I'm not sure what else we will be up to Ceefour--except that we do have reserved seats at the main stage, so we will be there for Elijah and Sean's Q and A. We are only there daytime for Saturday (thus missing Billy and Dom who have Friday appearances)--but we plan to go to both the Friday and Saturday night parties. We are actually supposed to dress up for the Saturday party. Honey is going to dress well all day--but I plan to be in jeans during the day and then put on my dress. Because we are changing hotels (long story) for Saturday night--I actually won't have a place to get dressed. So imagine me in Honey's car under a blanket--or in a restroom full of elves, making my quick and ackward change. We bought the party tickets on the off chance any hobbits might show. World Without Sundays is at the Friday party, so who knows??
There will be other fans there that I know of but they don't know me (occassional elicit live journal dipping, on my part!). It is strange to think you are walking by people who you can't identify--but you may have heard their stories and know something about their personal lives...
Name tags?? I wonder... :)
Oh Ainon!!! Nice to see you!!! Glad you finally got your EE. Now you have no excuse (the spoiler issue) to stay away from here :D See you around!! ;)

ETA: Darn. I wish I'd thought of it.
I have a pet griffin that I bought at Dragoncon in '99. It looks kind of like these guys. http://www.fantasypuppet.com/Gryphon.htm. If you go to the main page and click on "How to use", there's a video that shows how they move. Grif always used to go to conventions with me and ride on my shoulder. He was very good for meeting "stars", because I could make his head move to look intently at the star in question and the guy would get really spooked.
Also good for scaring the dickens out of kids, too. ::: evil cackle :::
Re book:
I couldn't tell, but I was hoping that the marbled thingy in the first pic was endpapers. That's very classy.
Amazing what you can do with desktop publishing these days! Why, in *MY* day, we didn't have all these new-fangled IMACS and word processors. We had to climb a hill and throw rocks to get any books at all! We had to chisel our text into stone tablets with our teeth! And we didn't complain, either! Hah! Whippersnappers! Whippersnappers all!
:::: recovering ::::
A word about "stars" and gifts: If a star kept all of the gifts that he's given, his house would soon be overflowing with stuff. A relatively "minor" star like Elijah would be concientious and polite enough to look at the stuff and appreciate it, but most of the teddy bears & stuff would get donated to charity. If he has any sense, any edibles will be tossed, as will - um - undesirable gifts.
I'm very glad that he's going to have an assistant examining the stuff for appropriateness to avoid what happened in Prague. And I hope that everyone will be polite, although I have no doubt about the Faculty, who have, more than once, said "...but I didn't have the heart to bother him...". Classy bunch, we are. Oh, yes, my preciousssssss.....
It's possible that the fate of the book, since it's so beautiful, will be to be looked at and appreciated, passed around to other hobbits, and eventually be autographed and auctioned off for charity. It would be a worthy fate for such an effort.
~grumpy (OTOH he might be so blown away by it that he keeps it)(Perspective, ~grumpy, perspective)(This guy spent several years immersed in life-sized John Howe/Alan Lee drawings)(I personally am hoping against hope for a Boyd/Monaghan rendition of 'Lijah the Tattooed Hobbit) :D

Grumpy, you make me laugh. In my first writing job, if I wanted change the word "stir" to "stair" (for example), I had to code the following:
+103462+rstir=stair+ (where 103462 was absolute line number in the document), output it to a punch card, and then run it with a bunch of punch cards to update the book. These newfangled word processors are a lot faster. :p

Just wanted to mention that when we went to see The Aviator last night (not my choice of movie but my friend is really into Leo), the trailer for Sin City was shown. Also, the poster was up in the lobby. VERY exciting!

Honey - your book is beautiful. I love the lacing on the spine. It looks very elegant. I was pleasantly surprised this morning when I opened this thread to see your book opened at the page with my picture on it! Then there was Whiteling's picture below it. I have a feeling that if Elijah flicks through the pages and sees her drawing, he will be rivetted (and want to keep it!). It is an exceptional drawing.
Honey and Alyon, enjoy your "close encounter". I hope you can retain a "snapshot" of that moment in your memory forever. I once "met" an actor (Rene Auberjonois) whilst in an autograph line 8 or 9 years ago. He looked up at me to ask my name, and I looked into his blue eyes as I told him. I can still see them today. As much as I admired the colour of his eyes, they don't have a patch on Elijah's. I know you'll remember!
Do you know approximately what time will you be meeting Elijah? I'd like to know so I can be thinking about what you might be doing at the same time! Unfortunately, California time is 16 hours behind mine (eg 3.00 pm on Saturday in California means it's 7.00 am on Sunday morning here!).
As for taking notes or just enjoying it - I suggest you just enjoy it for yourself. You'll be amazed at how much you'll remember (I've been to 4 conventions and wrote up reports for a club I belonged to). You also have the advantage of there being two of you, so you can exchange notes.
Enjoy!!!

Honeyelf - the book is lovely! Simply beautiful! I knew we could trust you to make it really classy! I am so proud and happy to be a part of the project. :)
Whiteling's artwork is the best I have ever seen. I think Elijah will be very impressed. That drawing of Frodo in the Sammath Naur is more than a portrait, it really has soul.
Well, everyone else, what are we going to do while we wait for reports from tORC...???
There was a little something I wanted to discuss with you all. I haven't seen many people commenting on North here at the Faculty. I know it is considered by some to be a piece of crap, but nevermind that because there were some things I wanted to say about it. There is this one scene when Elijah/North is racing through the woods on his bike. He then proceeds to simultaneously jump off the bike, throw it aside and run. It's like one perpetual motion, extremely agile and cat-like. Now, I wonder are all kids like that? I had to rewind to enjoy the thing a couple of times and I was thinking it's amazing how Elijah's movements sometimes seem to have a "rubber" sort of quality to them, a bit like Michael Jackson as the Scarecrow in the Wizard of Oz.
something that might be taken as a SPOILER below:
:
:
:
:
:
Something else I liked about North is how North's favourite spot is not the pretty woods, or the ridge over the river or the gorgeous treehouse (which BTW looks like it's a cut/paste out of the War!! ) but a leather armchair at the mall. It's in the spirit of that quirkiness that I associate with Elijah, and that I believe the filmmakers really wanted North as a movie to be ripe with. However, they didn't go the distance, and I think that is why it was never a big hit. But I can totally see why Elijah's people thought North a good role for him, if you look at the demands on him as an actor to balance comedy and drama.
So, there, that was probably my longest post to date...can't believe I wasted it on North... oh well. Like I said, it has some good points.
REALY GOOD TO SEE YOU AGAIN EANDME!!! :k

Just popping in to thank you, dear ladies, especially Kumari and Eandme, for your kind comments on my drawing. And I agree, it would be absolutely fantastic, if something in that gorgeous book catches not only Elijah's eyes, but his heart, so he'll keep it :) .

There was a little something I wanted to discuss with you all. I haven't seen many people commenting on North here at the Faculty. I know it is considered by some to be a piece of crap...
However, they didn't go he distance, and I think that is why it was never a big hit.
For a long time before I knew about Elijah I had avoided this film, simply because of the poster/video box cover showing Brunce Willis dressed as a pink rabbit. I was surprised at just how little he actually appears in this costume, and now it has become one of the films I can enjoy over and over again. Perhaps if they had promoted it differently it would have been more successful. Maybe they should re-issue it with more emphasis on Elijah's role. Or maybe Elijah wouldn't be too thrilled with that and wants to put it behind him. :D
.. or the gorgeous treehouse (which BTW looks like it's a cut/paste out of the War!! )
Watching several of Elijah's early film gives you the impression that it is the norm for American kids to have treehouses! Good Son springs to mind, and I think Paradise too had one.

Does anyone else feel a sense of expectancy? While I have lurked since last winter, I have only been posting for two months, certainly not long enough to be a tenured member of The Faculty ( not even a substitute teacher, maybe hall monitor), and I've a vague feeling of unsettleness since Honeyelf posted her pictures of the book. How do long term Faculty members feel about Honeyelf's book making it's way to EW?

Perhaps if they had promoted it differently it would have been more successful.
I've always felt that part of its problem was that it never decided whether it was a movie for children or for adults--and, for some reason, it doesn't strike me as a movie that works for both groups (thinking of things like Shrek and Finding Nemo). I agree with Eandme's comment that they didn't "go the distance"; if Reiner had done that with North as well as he did with The Princess Bride, IMHO it would have made a big difference. Seems as if it didn't know whether it should take itself seriously or not. I don't know which one it should have done, either, but I have the feeling if they would have picked either option and run with it, they could have "gone the distance."
North is another of Elijah's movies where I'd love to know what the original script was like. It's definitely a case where the book was better (IMHO), because it knew where it was going--and the movie completely throws out the central core of the story and concentrates on the parts that are further from the center, which makes it seem disjointed to me. (I saw the movie before I read the book, so I wasn't expecting anything in particular from the movie, but the pieces ended up making more sense to me in the book.)
Maybe they should re-issue it with more emphasis on Elijah's role.
Can you believe that after Chain of Fools comes out in February, North will be the only one of Elijah's feature movies that won't be available on DVD? (some TV movies and shorts not included.)
That might not seem like much to "newcomers," but since Elijah's become better known from LotR, we've gotten DVD releases of Chain of Fools, Flipper, The Good Son, Paradise, Radio Flyer, and Oliver Twist. None of them new movies. And guess who wasn't on the front of the VHS version of The Good Son but is on the front of the DVD ;) .
I'm hoping someone will wise up and get North out there before too long. One of the main reasons I haven't watched it for a long time is its DVD-less status. I can't watch it on my computer and I can't make screencaps :( !
Watching several of Elijah's early film gives you the impression that it is the norm for American kids to have treehouses! Good Son springs to mind, and I think Paradise too had one.
And Nat's treehouse is pretty important in Forever Young, as that's where they hide the "dead guy"--and where Nat learns to fly :) .

P.S. I've been hhhmhhmmpphh-ing all afternoon about the "segments of peeled onions." (That's as close as I can get to  while I'm at work. :p )

Ceefour, I don't think I count as a long-term member either, certainly not by post count, but since I had the pleasure of meeting Honey (and Achila!) not too long ago, I've been keeping my fingers crossed especially hard for her and Alyon, even though I didn't contribute to the book. So may I take a stab at answering your question?
If you mean, what do I think are the chances of her getting the book into Elijah's hands, I think the odds are probably pretty darn good that she'll be allowed to hand it to him. It's certainly not going to violate any standards the convention managers could possibly have, and it's classy enough to look Really Important. ;)
What happens to it after that, though, is anybody's guess. These pins and needles are getting really uncomfortable.... :D

and I've a vague feeling of unsettleness since Honeyelf posted her pictures of the book. How do long term Faculty members feel about Honeyelf's book making it's way to EW?
Ceefour--it is a weird feeling, isn't it??? There was always some concern that the Faculty itself would remain rather anonymous--so we never had to worry about a certain person looking in on our ramblings...so that remains so--no mention of exactly who or where we are. I leave home pretty much way too early in the morning tomorrow and I'm looking forward to actually seeing this book when Honey picks me up from the airport. Initially I wasn't even planning on being in any sort of line to see Elijah, as in itself that seemed too....unnatural??? Geeky?? ;) Ah, well, if the shoe fits... So as time has gone by I've decided to own up to the experience and to swallow it, whatever it might be. 15 seconds of ....I don't even know what. And the book?? Well, I decided long ago it was never a bad thing to show one's appreciation. But it will be weird. Who knows closely it will even be looked at? But we all will have had our fun and taken a chance with it.
And Ceefour--don't underestimate your contribution. You are definitely full-fledged Faculty. As much as I am--I've been around for longer, but don't post very frequently, but I feel a part of this nice community. You certainly are, too. :)
This discussion about North is interesting--I've yet to see this one, but if I recall Elijah once said it was one he liked. Despite the reveiws.
Treehouses?? Did you mention the one in The War???
Edit: Oh yeah, you did.

Alyon, do not dream that scary dream. Dream instead Kumari's dream. My mom had an experience similar to that. She was working for the George McGovern campaign in New Hampshire. As often happens, some celebrities dropped in to give their support to various candidates. One day, just standing in line at the bank, my mom noticed that Paul Newman was in front of her. Now, she had long been a pushover for those eyes. ;)
What happened was, Paul Newman just happened to look around and see her. He smiled and grasped her forearm warmly. "Vote for McGovern," he whispered, and winked.
And my mom was unable to say anything but an extremely fangirlish, "Yeeessss!" Needless to say, she kicked herself for years over not having the presence of mind to start an intelligent conversation. But she never forgot those eyes! :p
Ceefour, I like Alyon's take on the book. I think he'll get it. I think he gets too much stuff to bother to try to find us online. I ran a few searches on Google, and it can be done, but I doubt he'd put in the time. I hope he does get a chance to page through it, just because it can't hurt to know that people really -- really -- enjoy your work. :0
Eandme, I have often appreciated Elijah's unique movement ability. There's another great bike scene at the beginning of Forever Young, when the two kids crash their bikes over the curb. Then there's another biking and then a motorcycle-acquisition scene in Deep Impact. In fact, he does something like this every movie -- some "no holds barred" throwing around of himself that looks like it's about to fly out of control any second, but doesn't. It's wonderful to watch, and I do think it's a unique, personal ability.
(Sekrit message to Mariole: You had cards? Wow. We had to use segments of peeled onions.)
Sekrit response: Look at it this way: you were way ahead of the trend when it came to using natural products. :p

Whoa!! I can't tell from the page whether the DVD would work for region 1 coding, although I doubt it. But the Europeans got The Good Son on DVD before region 1 did, so maybe this is a good sign.
If I knew I'd be able to play it, and that the financial transaction would work, I'd be there in a flash!

From this week's "Entertainment Weekly":
"'Elijah's completely game for anything,' marvels Everything Is Illuminated director Liev Schreiber, referring to The Lord of the Rings' Elijah Wood, who plays an American looking for a Ukranian woman who may have saved his grandfather from the Nazis. 'We put these incredibly thick glasses on him, so he was walking into walls. Then we had to create these contact lenses for him that evened out his vision so he could see through the glasses. He never complained once. I was very impressed.'"
There's a little more, but it's about Schreiber and how his directorial debut made him appreciate being an actor more. And there's a photo of Elijah in the role that I haven't seen before, but I'm sorry I don't have a scanner to share the pic with you. The article headlines the film as an August release.
You would have thought I won the lottery by my reaction to the little blurb in Entertainment Weekly.... not to mention a pic too
But what can you expect from someone whose day is made by any little mention of a new Elijah movie in the not so distant future :)
I also get nervous when I arrive at a film late and nearly miss the coming attractions ;)

Just rushing in (late as usual) to say a big THANK YOU to Honey and Alyon for so nobly volunteering ;) to represent us all at ORC  .... and especially for the wonderful idea of The Book. I was slightly dubious about it at first (the thought of writing anything at all to Elwood or his getting to know about this thread  turned my knees to jelly), but I've got over that fear now. For what it's worth, I think that (unless our book gets lost at the bottom of a mountain of gift garbage and he totally forgets about it - unlikely, I hope), he definitely will read it. How could he fail to be intrigued by the lovely portraits and (if I know The Faculty) the insightful, thoughtful and intelligent observations that go with them? He doesn't get such quality stuff every day, I'm sure. The tasteful presentation (thanks again, Honey!) is likely to arouse his curiosity at the very least.
And I for one wouldn't be all that surprised if he googles us and finds this thread, or maybe the old one (if it's still there :z: ). He is human, after all .... I think.

Skater girl, you are in the lucky situation to know the original. To my mind "North" is one of the worthy contenders for the list of "ruined-by-dubbing" films. Sometimes German dubbing teams go really mad and try to literally kill the patient with the cure. In the case of "North" they made the horrible attempt to translate the movie's somewhat off-the-trolley mood and this led to an utterly deadly dull dialogue throughout the whole film. I couldn't hardly watch it until the end (which additionally came up with one of my personally most obnoxious endings I can think of - grrr.... )
Can you tell "North" isn't necessarily my favourite Elwood film? :p

We probably discussed this during the summer, and I have to confess that I haven't finished reading the book, but I don't remember Jonathan described as such a "nerd" in the book. I recall a lot of people saying that the manner of dress and the glasses made Elijah look like the film was taking place in the 1950's, when in fact, it was the 90's (right?). So what the reasoning was for these glasses (except to make big blue eyes even bigger!) is a mystery -- anyone know?

I suspect they overdid it, but I remember Alex's reaction to Jonathan: "This is an American?" He expected John Wayne or Tom Cruise and got Jonathan. I thought I remembered that J. was in a suit and tie, with glasses. Except for the lapels, the width of the ties, and a nightmarish period of polyester leisure suits in the 70's, suits haven't really changed that much since the 50's. Also, some guys still wear 50's hairstyles. And white socks with suits and ties.
I don't remember about his hair. I had a feeling Alex thought that J., hair and all, was dorky.
If anyone's eyes could survive a pair of coke-bottle-bottoms-glasses on film, it would be His Ladness's. ;)
It's encouraging to see a blurb about EII in EW. At least there's a little bit of buzz about his upcoming projects. If EII was an Opry book club selection, that'll pull in a good number of people watching for it, too.
The moral for all producers: Make sure that any movie is an Opry book club selection and has at least one LotR cast member. You can't lose.

The large version of Whiteling's "This Is Sting" is now up at frodolivesin.us, No matter how often or how much I look at it, I keep seeing new things! There are also a few new glossary additions (I think zkg's "One Lad" has been adopted by enough people that it's time to recognize it. ;) ). Other new stuff at the moment is Tolkien-related.
Now that the site's split into subdirectories, so I don't have to update the entire thing at once, I've added a "What's New" (www.frodolivesin.us/new) page where I'll keep links to things until they've been up 2-3 months. Since I'll be posting things as soon as I get them done, instead of one big update once a month, I thought the page might be handy for people who visit fairly often. So, you can go there and jump rlight to Whiteling's artwork or whatever else you want to see. Or you can navigate the same way you always have.
(And if anyone hasn't been there, for heaven's sake, go! Even though some other people do visit--someone new has just joined in the Guest Book discussion--I consider the site to be unofficially the Faculty's, so let me know if there's something you'd like to see. Now that we have both versions of all three LotR movies, it may be time to try to investigate the effect of the Grey Havens scene on the Secret Sam Smile hypothesis ;) .)

I just heard from a very breathless Honey! What a lucky woman. :k Here's what she said--
She and Alyon had their photo op with Elijah, and it was really all of about 15 seconds. He has cut his hair and was wearing it brushed back to show his forehead (which Honey says she loved), and he was "very sweet."
She gave him the book! :D
He said, "Oh, wow, what's this?" and Honey says she was unable to say a word. He opened it and saw the CD inside with the song, and flipped some pages and came to Whiteling's drawing and said, "Oh my God! OK!" and closed it, seeming intrigued.
He then put his arm around her and they took the picture -- and for any more about that we must await the return of Honey and Alyon. They haven't seen the photo yet themselves but I have a feeling they have a lot more to say. ;)
However, Honey also told me about the presentation/Q&A at which Sean and Elijah appeared together. Elijah was asked about the Ian Curtis role. He said he still doesn't know--he wants to do it, but he hasn't seen the script.
And that's all! I would have loved to keep her on the phone and grill her for more (all in the interests of in-depth reporting, you understand :p ), but she said they were exhausted and hungry, and they have the party tonight to get ready for as well. They are hoping the actors will be there.
I'm very happy for them both!

Ceefour, I have the distinct impression from Honey's intonation, which I'm sorry that my written report utterly failed to reproduce :o , that it was the latter. Thank you for asking.
Definitely the latter. :D
I asked her what she thought would happen to the book now--a terribly unfair question, but I couldn't resist. Naturally, she doesn't know and I think is afraid to be too hopeful, though apparently the actors have spoken (at this convention? or elsewhere? I'm not sure) about how nice some gifts are and that they do keep some. Honey did say that if Elijah is at the party tonight she would love an opportunity to tell him what the book is (since he asked).

I had this conversation with Honey about a month ago and told her quite frankly I would most certainly be unable to speak if I was that close to him. I'm so glad he received the book and I'm quite certain he will really appreciate the work and love that went into it.As far as KD goes I don't see how he will connect that book with this board. IIRC there's no mention of what group we are members of...he only knows we're a group of fans online..and there's too many Elijah fan groups out there for him to connect "The Faculty" to the book. Even so...in light of the way we conduct ourselves I don't think there's anything to feel ashamed or embarrassed about. Didn't he say once..."Attention from women is never a bad thing."?

I feel so. so happy for Honey and Alyon after all the work that went into the book. I can't imagine Elijah would ever not be nice, but they could so easily have come away with their spirits dampened if his response had been in the least half-hearted.
I'm not in the least surprised that seeing Whiteling's drawing elicited such a response from Elijah. My own reaction was the same first time I saw that particular one, and I think that having seen it there is now no way the book won't get further attention from the one lad.
Fred Astaire, Ceefour :D !! I had such a crush on him, or should I say his younger self, when I was 18. Aside from the wonderful dancing, he always projected an overabundance of that inexplicable magnetism that Elijah has.

Dear colleagues, please allow me a short but fervid SQUEEE! :) ;) :z:
Thank you. :D
Flourish, your report gave me almost a heartattack when I read it this morning. He really has our book. Wow. Just wow.
Achila, thanks for the cute pic (is it just me or looks Sean really weird?).
And a BIG thank you, Tg, for your wonderful new January update :k !

There are a bunch of pictures from ORC over on the A&F site, and what I really want to know from Honey and Alyon is what on earth were Elijah and Sean doing ballroom dancing together?
Achila

Actually, I can answer that (since I suspect that Honey and Alyon are probably still asleep!) -- Sean learned ballroom dancing for an upcoming film role and asked Lij if he knew how. Lij said no, and Sean was demonstrating.

Nope, dear Whiteling :k Sean looks weird. (Or is it me too? :)) Glad Achila told us it was him, otherwise I might have thought it was some eccentric East European indie film director. In that outfit Sean could easily blend into the Trachimbrod crowd. How odd: he seems to be wearing the very Shapka (Russian fur hat?) that Alex thinks is Jonathan's hair when he arrives on Lvov station!
Oh dear ... wish I didn't feel quite so apprehensive about what's been done to EII: The Movie. Someone tell me it'll be OK ... please
.
Apart from that, how fantastic that Lij was intrigued by The Book and commented on Whitelings drawing (how could he not??). Cant wait to hear the rest of Honey and Alyons account
and I hope they have THE most wonderful time!
Talking of hair, youre right, Shadowcat, about Stus crewcut in The War: no ordinary kid in the 1970s would have worn his hair like that. Unless guys were skinheads and making a political statement, they wore it long (and all the boys in that film had very short hair IIRR). Wonder who took that decision? Jon Avnet must have lived through that era, which makes it all the more surprising. For me at least, that made the movie a bit less credible, which is a pity in view of its excellence otherwise.
OK, as its fandom confession time, my Big Sin recently has been watching the ROTK EE DVD extras until 3 am on more than one occasion  and running certain bits backwards and forwards in slow motion
. such as, in the Frodos Last Shot sequence, the bit where Elijah takes the script from PJ and walks on to the set his expression and body language there are just adorable. I cant get enough of that scene: it demonstrates more clearly than anything else the depth of the affection and respect the director and crew had for The One Lad. And the modesty and grace with which he accepted the accolade (in contrast to
er, someone else who shall remain nameless). What I cant get over is that the whole event was so amazingly self-referential its perfect not only in the fact that, as Elijah says in the commentary, he too was leaving, but also because of what Frodo says in that scene and PJs reluctance to end the shoot. Sam: Youve finished it? Frodo: Not quite. Theres room for a little more. PJ: Have we still got some room on the mag? Lets do one more. And one more, and one more
. And there are Billy and Dom and Andy looking so moved, and PJ and Fran and Philippa crying their eyes out. Its simply beautiful and I have to force myself to stop watching it.
As is the scene with PJ flanked by Frolijah and, of all people, Sir Edmund Hillary. I never thought Id see those three in the same shot! In 2003, around the 50th anniversary of the ascent, I couldnt help comparing Hillary and Tenzing to Frodo and Sam, particularly as Hillary trained on Mount Ruapehu (aka Mount Doom) itself and is, as PJ says, a big fan of the book which was published in the year Everest was first climbed! (The Hillary on Everest documentary I watched was voiced by Sir Ian McKellen himself.) And what an amazing comment Elijah makes about Hillary cutting ice steps on the mountain: How about that for a mark New Zealand made on the world?
Thank goodness for Costa Botes, who filmed all of the filming over all those months/years, and usually with more than one camera from more than one angle! Priceless, and so insightful to realize how valuable that footage would become. I so hope we get to see even more of it one day.

Lovely report about the book. And I'm not surprised, either, that Whiteling's drawing caught his eye (all I could wish differently would be that we'd gotten "This Is Sting" in there, because I think it's even better :) ).
I'm betting the questions on the Ian Curtis movie caught Elijah off-guard when they started, but maybe he's getting used to them by now. He's always been close-mouthed about any possible roles until things are certain, but he hasn't had to cope with fans who are willing and able to figure things out on their own. I hope it doesn't make for more disappointment all around if he doesn't get the part.
On the hairstyle--I especially like the sideburns. And more on hairstyles:
[ETA: I simulposted with Serena, but I'll stand by what I've said below :p . Thirty-five years ago, small-town Mississippi was in a different cosmos than most of America (and the world).]
I heard a similar thing about Elijah's hairstyle being out of place for a movie. It was "The War". It was mentioned that crew cuts were popular in the '50's, not the '70's when the movie time period was set.
In 1970, in poor, small-town Mississippi, during the summer, I think the hairstyle was on target (and, BTW, it's not a crew cut ;) ). :) We see Mikey Carver over three years later and in a wealthy Connecticut suburb, which is an entirely different world, both timewise and geographically.
My guess is that Stu probably let his hair grow out some during the winter--like some guys in these northern climes grow beards during the winter for warmth and shave them off during the summer. OTOH, maybe Stu was just ahead of his time. It was about 1972 that buzz cuts were "in" for a few years, at least among certain groups (at my high school, it was the athletes). IIRC, it was when "skinheads" started surfacing that everyone else abandoned the look in order not to be associated with them.
Achila--The unicorn/weird horse image was in the discussion quite some time ago. (About a year? I know it was right around Christmas, because I connected the Elizabeth Barrett Browning quote in my sig with it.) It's been alluded to a couple of times recently, so I remembered to put it in the glossary--but it's kind of hard to explain in a few words, so maybe needs a better definition. The idea is that people who don't appreciate Elijah's acting or his inner and outer beauty are the type of person who would see a unicorn walking down the street and say, "Huh, weird horse." Great image, IMHO, but I can't remember who came up with it. Can anyone claim it, or remember who invented it?

Thanks, luv -- yes, I think I remember it now. Phew -- thought I missed something for a minute there! lol
BTW, what Sean's wearing on his head in that photo is a beret, apparently, sort of backwards. It appears that he's gained weight again, poor dear. Here's a cute pic of them dancing together:

Goodness -- someone should buy our poor boy a pair of jeans -- those look more like holes than pants! LOL.

I maybe completely wrong in this since I come from the UK, but could it have been because of where in America the film was taking place. Seeing the USA from the perspective of a Englander, I always thought that once you got away from East and West coasts, there were pockets in the middle of the continent which were way behind the rest in fashion and culture. Would it have been completely unlikely that in 1970s, in the back of beyond, away from the big cities there were actually small towns that still had the feel of the fifties and were untouched by what was going in elsewhere in the world, the way the one in The War had. My thinking is influenced by the kind of images we see in the towns depicted in Michal J Fox's Doc Hollywood and Bett Midler's Big Business. Surely there must be some truth behind these images.

I believe it was Eldalieva, several years ago. in the Harem thread. And to this day, I think it's the best way to explain why some people 'get' Frodo (and Elijah :) ), and other's just don't.
I'm looking forward to further reports from ORC. I'm glad Elijah got the book and so many people were able to tell them how they feel - I know he'll really love it! Now that it is in his hands, I'll admit to purposefully not contributing - what I feel is just too big of an ache, in so many ways, for me to put it succinctly into words, and so I chose just to stay to the side on this one. I'm really thrilled, though, that this labor of love found its way to him. :) :k
And on a totally practical note - the thread is now over 1,000 posts, and needs to be archived. TG, I'm going to put it in your hands to start the next one, if you don't mind - you may want to start putting #'s in the title, because at this rate, we'll be doing this quite regularly. :D

Mississippi is only one state away from the Atlantic, but it's smack in what would be (or would have been) called the Deep South. People in a similar small town there in 1970 would generally have been poor (most anyone who could afford to leave, did), isolated (it was unusual to have a--working--car, as you can tell from the movie; likely had radio but no television), behind the rest of the country regarding civil rights (the racist teacher got fired in the movie because a white mother complained, but in most places that teacher wouldn't have been hired in the first place). And, especially regarding the hair being either short (guys) or pulled back (gals), it's hot and humid during the summer, when the movie is set.
Things that have changed in so many of those communities since then would be most of all due to them becoming much, much less isolated, I would think.
So, yes, I found the hair--along with everything else--to be "spot on" (to use my favorite British expression :p ).

Thanks, Narya. Maybe it was she who "imported" it here--I don't remember.

That's something like the reason I didn't contribute anything about Frodo. So many other people saying what I would want to say, and not being able to put anything into words (to Elijah -- I can say plenty of words about him as Frodo). But the way he touched me as Barney was unusual, I think, and I'd said at the end of my description of that in a previous post that if I ever had the chance to tell Elijah one way that his acting had affected me, that would be the one--so that's what I did. Kept feeling like I "should" say something about his Frodo, but never found what to say. -- But I'm one who wouldn't mind at all if he found his way to this thread, or even to my website. I think what I'd want to say comes out in those places without my being self-conscious about it.

Sure, I can start the new thread (but I did it l-a-a-a-s-t time ;) ). When I started this one, I forgot that the beginning of the first post shows up forever after when anyone "hovers" over the thread... so I'll probably stick pretty much with what's been said before.
To keep things straight, if #4's been archived, this would be #5, so the new one would be #6?

Tg, I take the point about the crewcut: Stu's cut was not in fact one of those.
And yes, I did wonder whether the heat and humidity would lead people to cut their hair short in the summer. And the look the buzz cut gave Stu was effective in the context of the movie. Elsewhere, though, male hair was just about at its longest ever in 1970 - and not only in the UK as far as I know! But then there are always rebels against any trend. Aren't there?

Okay, all.
New thread is open--pretty much like the last one, so just carry on! :p
But, oops, I forget to put ": An Elijah Wood Discussion" after "The Faculty Lounge" in the thread title--which I suppose should be there for newcomers. Narya, could you add that, please :o ?
